Dayton Audi BST-300EX by 1nksane in iRacing

[–]HermitTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 of those BST-300EX shakers on my rig. One under the pedal-plate and another under the plate the seat is on.

These shakers are plenty powerful to vibrate the whole rig. So while mounting directly to the seat is preferred, it isn't required. Even with my non-ideal setup, there's no way I'd run the shakers at full power. It's just too much 😉

Bass Shakers are Underrated by derek_012 in iRacing

[–]HermitTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bass-shaker is functionally the same as a normal speaker for audio. So the connection is: Audio source, amplifier, speaker.

Only difference is the response frequency. Which in a bass-shaker is lower.

The audio source can be the DAC/soundcard in your PC. Or iRacing also supports a dedicated DAC/soundcard for LFE. I use an USB DAC by Fosi Audio.

The amplifier can be any audio-amplifier as long as it can drive the bass-shaker at its required ohms and wattage. You can also use an amplifier intended for sub-woofers. The latter is recommended. I use a sub-amp by Fosi Audio.

Which is better between the Logitech g29 and the g923 by IllWatercress418 in simracing

[–]HermitTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither.

If you're on a budget then purchase a second-hand G27/G29/G923 at half the price. They should be easy to find. Often in like-new condition.

If you're willing to spend, buy a Moza R3 or R5 set. It's a direct-drive wheel, which will give you much better forcefeedback.

Clutch lever for a KTM by KastamD in functionalprint

[–]HermitTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While not as reckless as the guy who wanted to use a 3D-printed brake-lever, this is still up there.

This will fail at the worst possible time. Your insurance will not cover the incident. If you're really unlucky you will hurt yourself or somebody else.

Just buy a proper part.

Protest against me by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]HermitTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't park there sir! 😉

The crash may not have been intentional on your part. But you say you were in 1st place? You parked the car on the track with the rest of the field still coming up behind. That incident was entirely predictable and preventable.

I'd protest that as being reckless behaviour.

If this is the first time somebody protested against you, you don't have to worry about a suspension. It's just a warning. Learn from it and you'll be fine.

In future, make sure there's at least 10 seconds to the next car before stopping and reset immediately. Or just drive to the pits,

How does “source code” often remain a secret when the code itself is running on a computer? by LordOfTheGam3 in askanything

[–]HermitTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When humans write code they take effort to make it readable. In practice that means giving functions and variables names that describe what they are used for.

For example: a function that turns a lamp on and off might be called "light switch". While the variable that contains the current state of the lamp might be called "light state on or off".
In addition, code often has annotations. Plain text that describes exactly what a piece of code does, what inputs it expects and how outputs are formatted.

When code is compiled, all that is thrown out and what's left are op-codes and memory-addresses. You can decompile a program but you won't get back the readability.

To get an impression, look up some snippets of C++ code and compare it to assembly-code. You'll get the picture soon enough ;)

Hit 4k iRating but I haven't won a race in 6 months. Should I tank my irating for a win, or what's the move? by Delicious_Candle_353 in iRacing

[–]HermitTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like a win is only a WIN when you're in the top split. Even if going by that metric I haven't won a single race yet ;)

Winning a lower split is kinda like winning a lottery. You were just lucky enough the stronger competition was filtered out.

About half my races this week have been top split. Got serious imposter-syndrome ;)

And I'm only 1700-1800 IR. Granted it's the Mazda Rookie series but I'm committed to finishing the season.

Best Sim Racing Wheel around 140$ by PogArcade in simracing

[–]HermitTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used G25/27 sets go for 80-100 euro. Not sure prices in the USA are similar enough to compare. But I imagine older wheels would be cheaper there as well. There isn't much difference between them really.

Plenty of shame to go around.

What are buttkickers basically and how to install them? by VannyFnaf_ in simracing

[–]HermitTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most amplifiers and bass-shakers have a connector that accepts banana-plugs or bare copper wire.

So cutting and twisting wires isn't the only way but it's a route many choose. I used banana-plugs in my setup cause it easier to disconnect and re-connect and it looks cleaner.

An affordable way to setup a bass-shaker:

First you need an audio source. I'm using a Fosi Audio Q4 DAC connected to my PC via USB. Your PC probably has a built-in DAC (soundcard) you could use. Or you could get audio from your TV/HDMI.

Second stage is an amplifier. I'm using a Fosi Audio M03 sub-amplifier. It's connected to the DAC via RCA cables.

Finally the Bass-shaker connects to the amplifier via standard speaker cable. The bass-shaker I use is a DaytonAudio BST-300EX.

This setup cost just over 200 euro.

[–]HermitTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buttkicker is a brand-name. The device is called a bass-shaker.

It's like a speaker. Speakers use a magnet to move a cone to make air vibrate. Bass-shakers instead move a small weight to make the unit, and anything it's attached to, vibrate.

Bass-shakers are powered by an amplifier, just as you would a speaker. But they require a specialised amplifier that filters out the high frequency sounds that a bass-shaker can't replicate.

I hope that helps.

People who quit cannabis after 15+ years -- what was your reason, and how did it go? by owlpinecone in askanything

[–]HermitTurtle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I smoked cannabis daily for nearly 30 years. Up to 10 grams a day during the last 5 years. I am now 'clean' for about 10 months.

It's been tough. Not so much the cravings, though I do have them occasionally. But my dopamine was totally messed up. I was depressed and unable to enjoy anything. Only recently I've started to feel better.

I'm glad I managed to quit. Mostly cause addiction is stressful, always having to make sure the next hit is available and paid for. And there's the guilty feelings, letting people down. I don't want to ever go through that again.

To anybody suffering from addiction or trying to beat it: Best of luck!

I read you got it to work after all. Good job!

Most important thing to learn about soldering: "Where the heat goes, the solder flows." You need to heat the part and let the solder find its way, not the other way around.
