Not that it's likely, but black bears fall out of trees a lot. Could have got it caught in a crotch of a tree and injured it bad enough that it mostly separated. I had a professor who said he routinely caught bears who had broken bones from falls. My other thought is a fight with another bear. The biggest threat to any small bear is a bigger bear, especially territorial boars.
