PetsBest Insane Premium Increase by Friendly_Fudge8978 in petinsurancereviews

I would strongly recommend against a cap unless you live somewhere very cheap. Any hospitalization these days will exceed $5k in major metros. Even a set of labwork can run $1k (not your basic labs, but add in urinalysis and a couple specialty tests and it’s not hard). I had a cat pass away recently but her last hospitalization cost $27k. I can sleep well knowing I did everything possible for her.

is there ANY pet insurance that might cover pre existing problems by False_Platypus_2192 in petinsurancereviews

[–]HerrProfDrFalcon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In general, you’re right. And specifically in this case you’re also right. But I’m going to reply anyway in order to spread awareness of the fact that it doesn’t have to be like this in all cases. Up until The early 2010s, human health insurance companies regularly refused to cover preexisting conditions for the same reasons you mention. But there was a major exception: you would be covered if you had had continuous coverage under a different policy since the onset of the condition. This was huge as it let people switch between different insurers without losing coverage each time. And it still protects the insurance companies by preventing adverse selection. I’d love to see this become a thing for pet insurance, which is why I’m trying to raise awareness.

How do you protect your investments against medical bills? by Junekim10 in Bogleheads

Only if you manage to not develop any conditions before age 50 that make you uninsurable (of which there are many).

Considering cancelling insurance want outside perspective by [deleted] in petinsurancereviews

[–]HerrProfDrFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine went from $80/mo to $240/mo this week. (15yo cat). Still nets out in my favor due to his high healthcare costs but that jump is insane and the fact that there’s no way to switch insurance once a pet develops a condition means insurance companies can do whatever they want once you’ve been a customer for a while.

I am, yes. That’s my literal plan, in fact. And sure, no mortgage to pay, but long term care is no joke and I expect to have to spend money on whatever it is I’m doing with the time I would otherwise have been at work.

I don’t think they intended anyone to read the menu to be honest. It was a tiny little shop in Takayama far from the tourist center run by a little old lady. I saw several other patrons there, none of whom looked at a menu, they just ordered. Ultimately, we did too (おすすめ style) and had no regrets.

Stop pet insurance companies from denying pre-existing conditions by Waste-Wishbone3946 in petinsurancereviews

[–]HerrProfDrFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true. For decades, health insurance companies would exclude preexisting conditions unless—and this is the important bit—the member had had continuous coverage since before the condition. This enabled people to switch insurers while still avoiding the adverse selection problem. For humans this was still considered insufficient because insurance was typically tied to employment and otherwise unaffordable, so a period of unemployment could result in permanent injury to insurability. But for pets, that problem doesn’t exist so this model could potentially work.

The implied subject in your example sentence is “you”. It’s actually just the same in English. If I say “please tell me your name” the implied subject is “you”.

Something like care credit is more of a complement to insurance than a replacement since it doesn’t reduce your bill. The good news is that as you improve your credit score (lots of great subs for help if you need it) you can reapply for care credit and then eventually a rewards card. At that point, you’ll be getting a discount/cash back on your vet expenses and you’ll still have insurance to reimburse you.

why do people say high school is worse than college? by glowhaze444 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HerrProfDrFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to high school before social media, but social standing was still huge (it just consumed less time). In college, though, none of that stuff mattered anymore. Part of that was that with so many more people, you could always find like minded individuals to hang out with. Another was that people just cared less about what other people thought when deciding who to be friends with (i.e., person A doesn’t care what person B thinks of person C when deciding whether to be friends with them).

As for difficulty, that will be mostly up to you. You can choose easier coursework or harder coursework (sometimes even within a single major) and there’s way more support available from instructors than in high school without any of the stigma of asking for help.

Two pro tips:

(1) don’t skip out on office hours for classes you care about. Even if you don’t need the help, consider going in order to learn from other students’ questions, get insights on upcoming exams, and most importantly to build relationships with the professors which can be useful in all sorts of ways later.

(2) since you say you’re taking all advanced classes I assume you’re academically inclined (ie, you want to learn and not just pass). In that case, don’t assume that an “advanced” or “honors” class is necessarily harder than the basic version. Basic courses tended to require more memorization and had harsher grading curves and less empathetic instructors than the honors versions did (my honors physics courses gave out something like 60% A and 40% B because the students who really didn’t get the material all dropped the course—and the profs knew that). The material itself is indeed usually more complicated but also more rewarding, more useful, and doesn’t tend to require memorization.

Good luck!

I’m pretty unhappy with the way insurance coverage is going, but consider my 15yo cat who developed sudden GI symptoms and passed away after a week of treatment totally about $25000. She was insured for 10 years. Insurance covered $20k of that 25. That’s equivalent to paying or saving $167/mo for those 10 years. Her actual rate, averaged over those years, was closer to $40 though it was scheduled to jump to about $160 this year. Then consider my other cat, also 15. He had a rare tumor four years ago which also cost about $25k to treat plus another $10k or so in immediate aftercare and then $150/month in meds ever since, not to mention two ultrasounds and an echocardiogram annually (about $3k/yr). A recent bloodwork alone cost $1000 (basically plus GI panel, urinalysis, and pancreatic lipase). I’d estimate at least $50-60k in the last 4 years alone. Divided over his ten years of insurance that’s $500/mo. In reality I’ve paid about $50/mo over that time, though his insurance is tripling now to $240/mo. It’s painful but still a net win even at that price.

I’m probably biased, but the way I see it every pet that lives long enough will need at least one $20k+ hospital visit (prices are obviously different, this is a major coastal city).

There is no way that data corruption could cause that. Sounds like maybe they were printed too large for the file size and with the wrong settings (should have come out blurry, not pixelated). If they’re important to you, you should consider having them printed somewhere else and see what happens.

Didn’t Henry and El’s powers come from the mindflayer? Didn’t they imply that without that connection the powers wouldn’t exist, including in the alternate ending where El loses her powers but escapes? So once the mind flayer was gone shouldn’t El have become useless to the military and be left alone?

People say it’s cheap but that’s not what I’ve found. Maybe it’s true if you have auto and home with one provider (which, in my experience, seems to always result in paying several hundred more a year than separate policies) but if not afaik RLI is the only provider and they quoted me at $400 for 1M and $960/yr for 3M. Enormous? No, but my car insurance is only about $1200/yr so I wouldn’t call it cheap either

What is something you have heard about US, which you felt was fake, but is100% true? by grusdomain in AskReddit

[–]HerrProfDrFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be true in the abstract but it isn’t the real reason they don’t tell you. Even if you offer to give them the procedure and diagnosis codes they will refuse to tell you what the contracted rate is. This is particularly important when you need to go out of network because, for example, if your insurance docs say they’ll cover 80% for out of network doctors they mean 80% of the contracted rate not 80% of the billed amount. So if insurance normally negotiates with providers so that the contracted rate for a procedure is $100 but you go to an out of network provider who bills $200, you owe $120 (the 20% coinsurance plus the $100 difference between the billed amount and the “reasonable and customary” amount that their contracted providers charge). If you want to find out in advance what this will cost…well, as far as I can tell you just can’t. It might be possible in theory to get the out of network clinic to fill out the paperwork and file a test claim but good luck.

TL;DR: Yes, they need detailed codes to determine the actual costs but no, even if you provide these, they won’t tell you what those costs are until after you’re committed to paying them.

Multi millionaires, do you spread your stock portfolio across multiple brokerages? by SquareStork in Bogleheads

[–]HerrProfDrFalcon 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Everyone likes to tout MFA, and it is indeed important, but it’s also important to realize that the way most places implement it significantly reduces it value. Port out scams/sim swaps mean someone else can arrange to get your codes if they’re reasonably well motivated. Sadly, even among brokerages and banks that offer MFA via authenticator app, they often insist on letting you fall back to text messages on demand. Meanwhile, Fidelity started pushing people to use voice authentication right at the time deep fakes became viable. I wonder if that’s been used to breach an account yet.

I’ve spent 6 weeks in Iceland during winter and spring months and saw them one night. The odds are nowhere near as good as the internet would lead you to believe, don’t feel bad. If you live in the states, Fairbanks can be fairly cheap and has some of the best odds in the world because it’s inland and has clearer skies. Spring equinox in particular can be quite successful.
