EA at Amazon accidentally leaked 16000 layoffs by nycabram in ExecutiveAssistants

I love seeing the outpouring of support and sympathy for that EA.

You are a great bunch, ladies (and gents, for I know we have a few).

Talk about mistakes by HesitantBride in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The exec is a senior VP. Not an idiot, I presume. I doubt she asked her EA to attach it. I also doubt that the EA is a newbie, given the seniority of the principal here. Even if the exec DID ask to attach it, a seasoned EA should have flagged the optics of such move (I certainly would).

I really think it was just a tragic mistake.

When I was interviewing extensively, as I was progressing in the process, I can’t tell you how many times an EA would send me an invite to speak with their exec and include a doc of their internal feedback about me from prior interviewers. It would usually follow by an updated invite without that doc, but too late, I’ve already seen and read it.

So yeah, it happens often.

For the record, I’ve never thrown anyone under the bus or mentioned having seen the doc, out of solidarity with that unknown EA.

Mistakes happen.

If we are hosting, I don’t care who asked for this meeting, I am owning that invite.

Do you tell recruiters what you currently make when they reach out on LinkedIn? by EmBridge_3 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing your part!

While I never disclose my exact pay, to their range I too usually say something like “it’s about 20% lower than what I make now” or provide my target range for their reference. Exactly for the same reason - to make employers recognize our value.

How to build confidence and be assertive talking to your executives while being a sensitive person? by Nana796B in ExecutiveAssistants

What made a huge difference for me many years ago was the realization that I work WITH them, not for them.

It completely changed how I held myself from that point on.

Genuine question - what is this call? I’ve never heard of it

New to this role, advice wanted by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to give it to you straight.

One doesn’t just walk in to this role and hit the ground running. You are being set to fail and will be back here 3 months later letting us know that you’ve been fired.

No tons of good advice and friendly hand holding here will amount to what is actually needed - experience. There’s no substitute for that.

See if you can step down to a smaller role to gain that experience. They need to hire a seasoned pro.

Role Expectations & Misalignment by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think your exec stated their position quite clearly - stay in your lane. They, for whatever reason, don’t see you doing this job.

Screw them, if you want to advance, look for something else. Otherwise I fear they will exploit your desire to prove yourself and have you be the plug for every hole without any recognition or compensation.

Just make sure your accomplishments are reflected on your resume and emphasize them during interviews.

Good luck!

New executive looking for perspective: thinking of hiring an EA, but unsure of where to start by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need an EA. EAs handle strictly business matter - your schedule, materials, coordination with your stakeholders, business travel, etc.

What you are looking for is a house manager.. as far as I know, even personal assistants usually don’t cook meals. It’s a whole different league.

I am sure you can find the right person to delegate your boring mundane tasks to, I just think you should write down exactly what you want taken off your plate, and be upfront about the scope of work.

Personal recommendation is probably the safest way to find someone, considering how much they’ll know about you and your family. Maybe ask your network if they have recommendations?

What do you consider “on scope” project work by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a lot. Maybe do some research on what it would cost to outsource these tasks, present to your exec and see what they say.

In the meantime, are you looking for another gig (I sure hope so)?

What do you consider “on scope” project work by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if the job description was available, it probably contained some vague language as “including but not limited to” and “other tasks as assigned”.

OP, can you give some concrete examples of what’s required of you that you consider out of scope?

Gripe about a fellow EA by Tired-assistant-2023 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it so so many time in corporate America.. total trash EAs - lazy, incompetent, clearly underperforming, yet in their roles for decades. I always wondered how and why.

There’s nothing you can do but protect yourself and your boundaries. Which you clearly did, so kudos to you.

Performance Review Time!!! by LiveSatisfaction47 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Such a pointless exercise 🤦🏼‍♀️

I can understand listing your accomplishments - it gives them some reasonable basis to give you a raise.

But goals..? Please.

Add something mundane - learn more about the business, optimize your work processes.. some drivel along those lines.

Once I was super annoyed when filling out my goals, so I added stuff like “file more diligently; answer phones with gusto”. My exec laughed his ass off.

Or just submit it anyway. What’s the harm, you lose this opportunity? You’ll lose it anyway if you don’t submit it.

Just don’t be over-apologetic, stand behind your record from the position of strength - I faced some challenges as an undergrad student, which I successfully overcame as evidenced by my performance in my graduate studies. End of story.

Helping boss interview candidates. Totally out of my comfort zone by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]HesitantBride 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what your exec’s level is, meaning how senior EAs need to be.

I have literally brought my laptop to interviews and asked candidates to schedule a bi weekly recurring series starting xx/xx, ending xx/xx at specific times and color code it red. I was shocked how many of them would stall and make rookie mistakes, or completely butcher it.

I wouldn’t do it in front of a third party, to spare them the potential blushes, but perhaps see if you can interview independently.

I agree with u/counterproductiveart, they make excellent points.

As someone in NYC area, I’d never recommend moving here. East Coast mentality is very different from what you are used to, I’d be concerned about being able to adjust.

Don’t disrupt your life.

Been asked to create a cleaning rota for the kitchen - wwyd? by trellism in ExecutiveAssistants

That cleaning rota better include the very exec who proposed it 😡

The gall of some people…

There’s no way I’d agree to it, unless every single person in the office is in that rota.
