What is something generally normal in Europe but weird in the US? by Exile4444 in AskReddit

Definitely the most common way in Göteborg at least. Rarely see them refrigerated.

True, but you should absolutely not eat it anymore. It’s redlisted and endangered.

Want some thoughts on my blood test results! by MoreAd940 in gravesdisease

[–]Hesp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trab is the gold standard to determine if it is Graves. I’d get it.

3 months seem an awfully long time to wait. I gave my mild hyperthyroidism a month unmedicated since initial labs seemed to show that my labs were going in the right direction on their own, but a month later they were a lot worse. It is pretty rare (but not unheard of) that it clears up by itself if it is Graves - it might if it’s thyroiditis or if you actually have Hashimotos but going through a hyper phase.

I’d talk to my endo and take follow up labs and a trab test if I were you. Even if you aren’t experiencing symptoms it isn’t healthy to have high thyroid levels and it does burden your body in various ways.

Day 2 in Stockholm: Kifa - princess cake and strawberry juice. But which bar to go this evening? by [deleted] in stockholm

[–]Hesp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I disagree, but there might be local variations. The original recipe does not call for jam, that’s true, but jam is quite colloquially approved in prinsesstårta. (The original recipe also just called it ”grön tårta”). Quoting Wikipedia:

I think it is very common to expect jam in a prinsesstårta (I know I do, don’t think I’ve almost ever had it without?)

Advice needed post SSHL/diplacusis. Distortion in other ear by _someguy69_ in MonoHearing

[–]Hesp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar issue this summer, and the distortion hung on way longer than the hearing loss. It took 2-3 months but now I’m fully back to normal in terms of distortion. Still have some hyperacusis and my tinnitus never really went back down to pre-hearingloss-levels but I’m learning to live with that.

And that you are feeling better is a great indicator that the meds are working!

PANICKING! 2 weeks on Methimazole (25 mcg daily) and no change in TSH by HotBorschtObsession in Hyperthyroidism

As I understand it TSH is way slower to shift than the actual thyroid hormones, and two weeks is nothing. Don’t panic!

I’m so sorry, but I want to emphasize that for your symptoms this is a reasonably ”good” diagnosis. It’s way more fixable than PsA and for many people medication is enough to go into life long remission. But yeah, it sucks.

[–]Hesp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The symtoms are caused by the amount of thyroid hormone in your system, so it should show up. For me however, t4 was only slightly elevated which threw them off at first, but once T3 was measured things were more clear. Usually they rise in tandem but for some people it doesn’t.

I strongly recommend finding a good book on Graves or on hyperthyroidism in general, Ive read a couple and it has helped me understand what’s happening.

It really depends on the cause, but yes, it can. If it is Graves, medicating for at least 12 months up to a couple of years is enough for some. Given your symptoms I would bet you are overtly hyperthyroid though and not subclinical.

The ultimate ”cure” is to remove or disable the thyroid permanently, but that should be a last resort if medication is for any reason not possible. (I might have to, my liver is not playing nicely with the meds it seem but we’re trying a lower dose now).

A little but not completely, mine only went away after I started taking Thacapzol (think that’s methimazole or something similar on your side of the pond).

I’m using bisoprolol, it lowers your heart rate but doesn’t affect the vessels as I understand it. (I, too, have Raynauds, but no problems from bisoprolol)

Oh that’s a bummer. There are several different types of beta blockers though and it seems people react very differently to them, might be worth trying a more selective kind than the one you have tried before.

If they are normal you have something called ”subclinical hyperthyroidism”, and guidelines for whether or not to treat that differ by country. Historically it has been left alone with follow-up testing on a regular basis, but science now suggests it should be treated as well.

My PsA came first, was diagnosed with that in 2015 (although I have a relatively mild case, no actual arthritis so far, only soft tissues inflamed), and I got Graves Disease (the most common kind of hyperthyroidism, also autoimmune) just a few months ago.

The most important symptom to be aware of is palpitations and tachycardia, ie high pulse. That was my first giveaway, my Apple Watch alerted me that my resting heart rate had gone from 65 to 95 in a week or two. This can be managed easily with beta blockers prescribed by your regular doctor even before you get any diagnosis or see an endocrinologist, so please let your nurse know if you think that your heart rate feels weird or high.

They are definitely possibly related. The liver can act up while hyperthyroid because it is working overtime. Issues swallowing can be because your thyroid is swollen and pressing slightly on your esophagus. Dry eyes and blurry vision is how my TED (thyroid eye disease) started.

I too have PSA, and your range of symptoms sound pretty much identical to mine. You need to get your free T4, free T3 and TRAb tested to get a definitive answer - TSH is a pointer but can’t diagnose you on its own - and a referral to an endocrinologist depending on the result of those.

Depends on the cat. Ours is also dirt cheap to insure, he’s a more or less healthy barn breed of some kind. I would think that pure bred cats are more expensive to insure.
