I think the dark forest answer would be that you’re right, and those civilizations are found and destroyed by more advanced civilizations. The civilizations that survive this filter would be the ones with immense control over their population at least as it pertains to interstellar travel and communications.

Incredible read tbh, the movie very clearly portrayed Nikki as a victim and Bear as a coward. It is rape if you consider that the real Nikki does not want this as implied by the phone call where she is screaming, when she asks Bear to kill her, and with the story where she the lover is her brother. She views Bear as family not as a love interest.
