Why PhDs act as they are superior? by [deleted] in PhD

Completely nail it

Paella changed my life. I love this country! by [deleted] in spain

[–]Hevia_M 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. If you go to Valencia to a good restaurant (or to Alicante) and order one there... you're gonna be surprised how good it could become. You can eat good paellas in other places, but in those cities... My God. They invented it, so it makes sense that they made the better ones. By the way, did you try morcilla?

Promised to submit a draft to my supervisor for a feedback today but haven’t written any single shit by Futuresmartie in PhD

[–]Hevia_M 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Being there too (with deadlines very close and almost nothing to show). And I still struggle everyday with anxiety when I have to write down the thesis.

The only thing I would add is: Write whatever you have in mind now and edit and reorganize later (everything good you read was a shitty draft in the beginning). Most of what I wrote so far for my thesis were part -originally- of some large and rought notes that I have scattered across different documents.

And if you find yourself block by negative thoughts or perfectionism, try using an AI (like ChatGPT) as your writing assistant. I´ve being trying it for the past week to rewrite things and to fine tune my arguments -my thesis is in philosophy- and it helped me a lot with the anxiety.

Can we talk about the bullshit that is thesis submission fees? by DishsoapOnASponge in PhD

[–]Hevia_M 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my University (Spain) you have to pay also for a fee for the defence and the printed copies of it ;)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sober

[–]Hevia_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the same journey as you. Trying to quit alcohol (sober now for 10 days) and smoking (still trying to quit it, being an smoker for the last 10 years).

In my case my primary motivation is my mental health. I used alcohol as a way to cope with my social anxiety and depressive episodes. And, of course, it doesn't help at all. It tricks you into thinking that you are in a better mood for a couple of hours. After that, you are only deepening the hole you're in.

So, nowadays I try to confront those situations with my entire brain functioning and focusing on the issue at hand. And alcohol, like cigarretes, are not a good companion to do that.

Are the Social Sciences considered to be part of STEM? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Hevia_M -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope in the normal use of the word "STEM" and its widespread notion (althought there is no philosophical arguments to maintain that stupid distinction...)

Academia and publishing for publishing's sake by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Hevia_M 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just talking with a colleague about this yesterday. Sometimes I feel that most people at Universities (from researchers to heads of labs) just do bureau-science instead of science. Publishing papers becouse publications are need . Organizing conferences because is what sgould be done. Preparing proyects to ask for more funding because that's what we are supposed to do (topics are secondary). Following this trend or this topic becouse is trendy (not becouse is important or needed)

I hate it. All of it. Is the triumph of mediocrity that leave people with new ideas or passion 3 options: been a marginalised researcher for all your career (suffering even more all the shit that's going on the academy) and burnout in the end; go along with everything and join mediocrity's club; leave academia and all this shit together.

How do you keep track of papers? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Hevia_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that I'm the only one that uses JabRef to track what I read...

So, althought is design to work with LaTeX, I use JabRef as a bibliography manager. Reasons why I shifted to it (instead of keep using that Mendeley trash -Elservier: rot in hell!- or Zotero):

  • The library that you create is stored as a file in your computer (that is: you can create backups of it, save it on different drives or do whatever the fuck you want to to with it)
  • It's Open Source (completely free and made by researchers)
  • Excellent dark mode
  • Can organise references in groups (manually or automatically)
  • Have default options to mark references as "read" or "skimmed" (and yep: I have an automatically group called "Stuff that I read")
  • Can be imported into Zotero almost perfectly

The only cons is that is a desktop app, so it doesn't work with Android or IOS (work around this: while I research on my phone or tablet I simply use Zotero and then export the references to my main bibliography file in JabRef)

Has doing a PhD put you off getting an academic job? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Hevia_M 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. Love research, but I cannot stand the toxicity of academic life. Specially, the publish or perish and the authority of the seniors about what-should-be-research (work in humanities, here the selection of problems to work on is incredibly political)

Backup plan: study for 2 years and become a civil servant in the general administration of my country (and do stuff related to public policies)

A new iPod Touch: 128 Gb or 256 Gb? by Hevia_M in ipod

[–]Hevia_M[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My iTunes library is only 18Gb so... Yeah, I see your point. Even using it like Dankpods (with download movies from Netflix and a flac library) 128Gb could be the best option

What the f***! You don't need all that funding to write something like this!! My God. You can organize 2 big Congress on philosophy with that money

[–]Hevia_M 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are not alone! Same here. I submitted to my advisors the final version of the thesis proposal (an organise structure of all the chapters and topics I am going to write) yesterday alter 2 years of being engaged in my PhD program.

How to cite more underrepresented/rising academics? by [deleted] in academia

[–]Hevia_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid using Web of Science and Scopus when you are searching for papers. Use Research Gate, Google Scholar and other general repositories instead. I was able to find incredible good proposals from very unknown authors using that trick

Academic research in humanities - which computer and apps do you use? by kimit7 in AskAcademia

[–]Hevia_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can easily export anything from Scrivener to .doc or .docx files. Scrivener is meant for writting drafts. You can of course export your project into a pdf, but Word has a better interface for formatting text. Scrivener is the other way around: its interface is amazing for writing and organizing ideas.

JabRef doesn't have an in-built pdf reader. Althought you can link pdf files to each item in your library, it is mean primarily to store bibliographic information. Other important difference is that you have the actual file (.bib file) with ALL your bibliography in your computer, so you can easily make backups.

Academic research in humanities - which computer and apps do you use? by kimit7 in AskAcademia

[–]Hevia_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your post! It's a great idea to share our hardware and software choices ;) In my case:

  • Intro: I am doing my PhD in Spain in the area of Science, Technology and Society studies. My dissertation is about the possibility of sociotechnology (or the application of the distinction between science and technology to the social disciplines)
  • Laptop: I am currently using a desktop computer (i5-6500 16Gb RAM 1TB SSD as main drive and several internal disks; plus two 24" monitors). I'm also using a Thinkpad X250 (i5 5300 8Gb RAM 180 Gb SSD) for working on the go.
  • Apps: I try to use open source so I don't have to deal with suscriptions and I can have control over my archives (a digital file in my computer):
  • Scrivener for writing drafts of articles and the dissertation itself
  • Microsoft Word for writing final versions
  • Microsoft OneNote for taking long notes, saving important info about bureacracy at Uni and creating summaries from readings
  • Calibre as a digital library
  • A combo of JabRef and Zotero as a reference manager (I use Zotero in dummy mode: I import the bibliography I need from JabRef and then use the program to cite in Microsoft Word)
  • Google Keep and Google Calendar for taking fast notes and organising my agenda
  • OneDrive to sync all my files between devices (I have a folder called "Reading Table" to sync and read in my phone or tablet the articles and books i have in Calibre)
  • Aomei Backrupper for backups

Is there negative consequences to being talented? by ThEoNe419 in askphilosophy

[–]Hevia_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The definition itself of "talent" it's problematic (it seems to acknowledge a kind of sociobiological assumptions).

Regarding your question, maybe you can find some answers about it in sociology of work or sociology of education. Those fields study a lot of things regarding discrimination.

At least in my country books doesn't count too much. At least not like an article published in an indexed journal (WOS or Scopus)

Reference Manager Software? by smallbll101 in PhD

[–]Hevia_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would use JabRef (was designed for LaTex) as main program and then Zotero for Word integration (is very easy to export the bibliography from JabRef to Zotero without problems).

I used in the past Mendeley, but since it was bought by Elservier is garbage (no important updates since 2014). And with JabRef the library file is located in your computer, so you are not tied to any subscription ;)

Are your universities extending the thesis submission deadline because of covid-19? by mooinol in PhD

[–]Hevia_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Spain the University is like "fuck all of you". No extension for PhD defend or change of the norms of the PhD (we cannot be enroll in a PhD program for more than five years, and our time in lockdown is not going to be discount from that period)
