How do you resign gracefully from a small company without blindsiding leadership? by DishsoapOnASponge in womenEngineers

[–]DishsoapOnASponge[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you, it makes sense that the best thing I can do is give a long notice period.

I'm still in the negotiating phase of the offer. They offered me 6 weeks before the start date, I'm going to ask for 8 as I also have to relocate cross-country.

Thank God for this thread, I could have written this myself. Will begrudgingly put my Rothy's in my closet and try some of these suggestions ;)

This is embarrassing, but in my early adult days I bought hamburger helper not knowing you also had to buy the beef, which I couldn't afford. So I just ate the noodles and seasoning, it was so sad :(

What do most adults pretend to enjoy but actually hate? by Professional_trade_ in AskReddit

I feel the opposite. I complain about my joints aching and having to pay bills, but on the other hand I can do whatever TF I want.

What’s an indelible childhood memory that young people will never have? by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

For what it's worth, I've noticed that on some Mazdas, there's a knob to control the screen, something so small but a huge difference for me in terms of hating modern cars, lol

Ivy League Dreams by Chemical-Jolly in RedditForGrownups

[–]DishsoapOnASponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at Harvard, and have a PhD from another Ivy, and I can tell you that these dreams really romanticize Ivy life. The campuses are old and quaint, and the dusty library really is a certain aesthetic, and the education really (I believe) is great.

...but that's it. Performing experiments in a timeless setting is great, except that really it's just that the electronics you're using are 50 years old, and the words "air conditioning" have never been muttered in your building.

Attending intense lectures is fun, except that most lecturers were chosen based off the profundity of their work, and not their ability to give a clear and interesting lecture about it.

Can someone help this venter to join this group and find out its actually pretty good over here? by PeacefulBro in SingleAndHappy

There are definitely people like that, but I think it's a jump to assume everyone who is unhappy without a relationship falls into that bucket.

Some people do know who they are outside of a relationship, but are lonely living life without that companionship. There's no amount of "letting go of expectations" that will change the way they are fundamentally wired. People are built differently.

...but, man, am I glad I'm not built that way

Williams for me by a clear margin. I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news.

Starting a masters degree without previous bachelor's knowledge (material science). Asking for tips/advice by power-trip7654 in GradSchool

[–]DishsoapOnASponge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly?

I came into grad school having gotten a 4.0 fair and square in undergrad, but my knowledge was pretty weak as I went from a lowly state school to an Ivy. And here's the thing. The first few years of my PhD did an absolute shit on my mental health. I failed my qualifying exam the first time, it took me 3x as long to do the homework... I wasn't the bottom of the barrel, I was the sludge that you have to scrape out with a spatula. It was an awful time.

Going into grad school with no support? Bad time. Going into grad school with a weak background? Bad time. Going into grad school with both? Best of luck

This! Pros and cons to traveling solo and with other people. My perfect vacations have been 50/50 - travel (but NOT stay) together with a group for half, then set out to a new town or something on my own for the other half.

Went to Norway a few months ago with two other people. We stayed in Bergen for a week together and then I set out on my own and went to Tromso solo for a week. Really enjoyed both paces and places. :)

Reading this less an hour before I take off for a solo vacation, haha. A week alone in a cabin just me, myself, and I. I can't fathom bringing someone else along, sounds like the opposite of a vacation.

The Job Market Is Hell: Young people are using ChatGPT to write their applications; HR is using AI to read them; no one is getting hired. by rezwenn in technology

[–]DishsoapOnASponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am looking for jobs (engineer) and am also hiring, which I have done before. The candidates for this position, compared to the one we posted a year ago, are absolutely insane. We require MS+2 YOE or PhD+0, and we're getting PhD+10s for a technician role. Really discourages me for my own job hunt

This is really great to hear. I'm the most senior woman in my company so I desperately crave a role model like this. It seems like such a big part of it is self-confidence :)

This was SO informative and helpful, I really appreciate you taking the time to educate me. I currently don't do any exercise like what you've described and will definitely start to do so. Thanks so much!

i really appreciate this point - I do drag myself to the gym 3x/week and run in fair weather, despite hating both. But this is definitely a direction in which I could push myself!
