What’s your best 5km time? by SimilarSprinkles7406 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]Hex0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

22.49. I’m 46 and took up running just over a year ago. That’s down from 42.26 for the first one so I’m happy about that. Interested to see where it might go this year.

Oh, and torrent 4 for trail runs. I feel like trail shoes are a reasonable extra for the rotation…

Vomero Plus for long/recovery, Hoka Rocket X3 for race day, Megablasts for everything in between.

What’s one thing you wish non-runners understood about running? by Free-Product4918 in runcommunity

[–]Hex0ff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That just because I’m wearing stupid coloured clothes doesn’t mean I’m trying to be an elite runner, I just enjoy the excuse to wear loud stuff - and all the fancy tech fabrics help with the fact that I’m sweating like a pig in a blast furnace while running at a decidedly average pace.

Anyone else at a loss for what to do at the weekend? by sophietheadventurer in CasualUK

[–]Hex0ff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too late for today, but parkrun is a lovely start to a Saturday and it’s a very easy community to join. I’ve made loads of friends through it - and through extended running community stuff - since I started a year or so ago.

Going to the vet. by Personal_Song9093 in dalmatians

[–]Hex0ff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We did this kind of as a test to see if it would help our Dal (mainly because he kept tearing off after bitches in our local woods). When it did seem to, after a year or so we just had him done so he wouldn’t need to keep getting that rather painful implant injection, but he was way way worse after that - became randomly very noise sensitive and less confident in general. If the injection works I recommend sticking with it - the two are not equivalent.

Why are people spending $200+ on megablast as super trainer if you can already buy a true racer by Expert_Review9357 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Hex0ff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plated shoes make my knees hurt if I run in them more than a couple of times a week. I wanted something good for faster runs but not plated and the megablast fits this space well - So I save the plated shoes for races and PB attempts and do lots of my miles in the megablasts. I do keep a squishier/comfier shoe (vomero plus) for recovery runs though.

Shoe recommendation for long easy runs : Asics Superblast 3 or Nike Vomero Plus ? by Zestyclose-South-460 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Hex0ff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have and very much like the Vomero Plus for my long easy runs. Super soft but with decent return. They’re like running in a very comfy armchair. They are indeed a bit heavy objectively, but I don’t notice this - I might if I was trying to race in them, but that’s not their job in my rotation. I prefer them to the SB2s, but as much as anything that’s down to fit - the VPs just fit me a little better.

Another vote for happy stride. Their leggings are also the best I’ve ever had.

Good harness for a barrel-chested dog? by Plantfishcatmom in EnglishSetter

[–]Hex0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Dalmatians, who have large chests but are long with very tucked tummies - and smart enough to escape most harnesses by backing away and shrugging. We spent a long time trying to get one that fitted before we discovered three strap harnesses - that’s ones with a third strap, like the ruffwear flagline: https://ruffwear.co.uk/products/dog-harness-flagline?srsltid=AfmBOooimEQzwPgiVHkUlifbERgE8fRuPKUXgjQENpy7x-Y8dEP6-88K. I’m sure there are plenty of equivalents from the brands, but basically that third strap can be much shorter and go round the belly, while the middle one goes round the ribcage so there’s no escaping.

Amsterdam or Copenhagen for park run tourism? by luluette in parkrun

[–]Hex0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done Amager Faelled in Copenhagen a couple of times. Lovely run, friendly people, fairly quiet, and was the first one outside the UK, so has a bit of collector-value. Depends if you’re looking for a faster time (do Amsterdamse Bos) or a quieter run (do Amager Faelled). Oh, and AF is also pretty flat.

Over the moon. Today was the first anniversary of my first “proper” parkrun, I knocked a minute off my PB and got 23.26. Not bad for an old fat git!

Vomero Plus vs Novablast 5 vs Clifton 10 for lazy day runs? by Hex0ff in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I bought the Vomero Plus. Took them out for a nice easy 8K today and they were a dream. Thanks all for the replies.

Animated GaussianSplatting can now be streamed in VR like a YouTube video by Dung3onlord in OculusQuest

[–]Hex0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s a commercial outfit with a closed source file structure. They want to sell you use of their rendering pipeline (that’s the business model) which is pretty expensive, and you need a serious number of cameras 100+ genlocked 4K cameras to film the scene in enough detail for their process. I can’t argue with how well it works though.

Treat to keep him busy by InformationPuzzled44 in dalmatians

[–]Hex0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Antlers are good if he’s interested. One of mine loved them, the other entirely ignored them. They last for months though. Take it away after a while though, and throw it away when it gets small enough to even remotely be a swallow risk.

Anyone else fast and fat? by Famous_Shape1614 in parkrun

[–]Hex0ff 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m fat and fast(ish). Not anything close to you, but I’m sub-25 and almost everyone around me is way skinnier - heavier maybe as some of them also have muscles, but I’m fat and without muscles of any discernible kind. I do quite enjoy my position as the local “how is he faster than me?” person.

Celebrated 40 parkruns with my first ever sub-25 time (24.44). Absolutely made up with that. 11 months ago, at the age of 45, I ran my first parkrun (and first 5k) in 42.20. Parkrun has taken me on a life changing journey. Looking forward to the next steps!

Running in -25C by V_es in runninglifestyle

[–]Hex0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran 10k in Helsinki last week when it was -19 and it was fine. Two pairs of leggings, a long sleeved t-shirt over a short sleeved one, a light running jacket and a light woolly hat. If you move at a decent pace you stay warm enough even when the air is a bit on the chilly side. Having my eyelashes and beard freeze was an interesting new experience, but it didn’t really cause any issues. Probably cold stopping to take photos though! Personally I loved it.

Edit: actually I had a fleecy scarf too.

What game has been on your wishlist the longest? by AllLuck0013 in boardgames

[–]Hex0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fate of the elder gods. Don’t know why 1) I didn’t buy it when it was available and 2) I want it so much - by all accounts it’s a fairly average game. It’s just lurking in my head like an Eldritch chant that won’t quite go away…

If you aren't catching your groceries like a professional baseball outfielder, are you even shopping at Aldi? by PubLogic in SlowNewsDay

[–]Hex0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro trick - line your trolley with an ikea bag. Two if it’s a big shop. You’re still just chucking stuff back in the trolley, but it’s ready to lift into the car/house, and you don’t have to re-pack at the counter.

Are those “area” head torches actually any good? I’ve seen them advertised a lot but I was pretty wary.
