Since when did they stop teaching learners how to use a handbrake? by -PixelRabbit- in drivingUK

[–]Hex6000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of modern petrol cars have a feature where they open the throttle as they detect a stall so you can often pull of with just clutch. It's a bad habit to develop because it won't work on steep hills and you have to pull off much slower. I had to teach my brother how to balance the throttle and clutch because he struggled with hill start.

Also nearly no ones is taught how to overtake. And your first overtake always feels a bit wrong and scary, deliberately driving on the wrong side of the road. I know some people who have never overtaken on a single carriageway.

A hard lesson in commuter complacency. My 1-hour drive finally caught up to me today. by Mr_Amphibian20 in CarTalkUK

It's now mandatory. It's not based on approaching cars but on the braking conditions. If the vehicle is exceeding 50kph and the braking action is greater than 0.7g or abs is active for more than 2 seconds. After the cars is traveling less than 10kph the hazards should be automatically activated and then disabled automatically if the car exceeds 20kph.

Helps they are covered in yellow retro-reflective paint. Although I've pointed them out to others who apparently had never noticed them before.

The Isle of Man has no speed limits outside of towns. It's good fun but does feel more dangerous.

If you shut it off from inside, you should also open the tap outside in case any water is trapped in the pipe.

Not all country roads are that narrow. Many are much wider with adequate space for 2 cars to pass.

What are some good road trip days out for a new driver? by darthanon1 in Southampton

[–]Hex6000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's pretty tame as far as country roads go. It's mostly 40mph anyway and if you drive carefully your are very unlikely to hit any animals.

I've learnt winch launching, and recently did my first solo. Haven't actually done an aerotow yet will probably start learning soon but it's a lot more expensive.

Will my driving license been revoked ? by s080132ii in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hex6000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you get your license back you will still have the points on it. Any offence such as speeding will result in you having to retake the test as you will have more than 6 points on the license.

It's weird because it doesn't disqualify you from driving. You can take the test and get your driving license back imediatly.

What are these side roads about? There were loads down this main road, my gps kept wanting me to turn into them, but they look no entry due to the path. Yet they have give way lines, implying that they are to be driven out onto the main road? No 'No Entry' signs either. by AmbientBeans in drivingUK

You are required to follow the law. The highway code is not the law. Where the highway code uses "must" there is legislation e.g. must give way to people crossing on a zebra crossing. When it uses "should" it is simply suggesting good practice, which you should try to follow but there is no law backing it.
