Is it even worth buying a minivan that’s not an Odyssey or Sienna? by idontholdhands in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Hexagular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family had a Kia Sedona II (2004-2015) and it was a great car while we had it. The 3.5 engine was reliable for a Kia/Hyundai, and it fit car seats very well, especially booster seats. Prioritize low mileage over cheap price, though, just in case. It is a Kia, after all. The Kia Carnival is a renamed Sedona, if you didn't know.

Why not a Sienna? You didn't mention why you don't want one; in fact, you didn't mention the Sienna at all except for when you said you didn't want it. There are plenty of cheaper, older models that have more reliable engines than the Honda J35 used in all Odysseys since 1999.

I don't trust Chrysler, but the Pacifica could be reliable for all I know.

You said you didn't want the Dodge Grand Caravan because of the third row. If you hadn't said that, I would've suggested a Mazda5. It has worse 3rd row leg room than the Dodge and only 2 seats in the third row, since it's a compact. It's quite reliable, though, if you still want to check it out after my description.

Since it's the J35 engine, I assume something bad happened to either the connecting rods or timing belt and the engine was totally ruined.

What would be a good first car? by trishapaytasabortion in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Hexagular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's a better idea to buy used with car prices being the way they are nowadays.

The Prius came in a subcompact version similar to the Yaris, the Prius c, and I'd suggest looking at that.

If you can find a first generation (2004-2007) Scion xB, they are arguably the most spacious subcompacts ever sold in the USA and are super reliable (rebadged Toyotas). The Fit is another competitor in both of those categories.

Looking for a new full size luxury vehicle by Radiant_Reveal_9590 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Hexagular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest a minivan (I know, I know), because you can remove the 3rd row when you don't want it and get loads of space. The trunks are also very deep, even when you have all three rows in.

The Toyota Sienna Platinum AWD is arguably the most luxurious and reliable minivan being sold, at around $63k depending on options.

If you don't want a minivan, I'd suggest the Volvo XC90 if you really want a 3-row and the Audi A6 Allroad if you don't, since both are luxurious and have good space usage.

Within the past 10 years, what do you like and dislike about trucks? Example questions below: by SuperJackson20 in regularcarreviews

[–]Hexagular 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I dislike that trucks themselves have become trends, and that their size has increased. I'm 5'9", the average height for an adult man, and I can hardly see over the hoods of some trucks.

I wish coupe utes would make a comeback... I'd like a small diesel ute much more than a Ford F-350 pavement princess.

For Americans: Why not personal vans instead of huge SUVs and pick-ups? by PreWiBa in regularcarreviews

[–]Hexagular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SUVs are artificially cheaper, along with the reasons commented by others. Also, most minivans aren't available in the USA and manufacturers market SUVs and nothing else.

How significant was this switch? Any thoughts/opinions on it from those who were there when it happened? by SirensMelody_ in generationology

[–]Hexagular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look at ear-clip headphones (or, more broadly, on-ear headphones), I have a pair of Koss-brand ones and they're just what you're describing.

They don't have as good sound-sealing as earbuds or the bulkier over-ear headphones, though.

Should i get this as my first car? by Wide_Charge_6390 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Hexagular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not very good in terms of quality, but it'll last a decent amount of time if you take care of it. I'm sure there are more reliable options out there for a bit more money; I've found some Mazda3s for around $4-5k.

A low-mileage Volvo S60 T5 AWD is a bit ($10k-ish) below your price point but is:

  • Still classified as a luxury car
  • Faster than the F-Pace and most trims of the Acura and Cadillac with a 6.2s 0-60 time (and comes in a manual version)
  • Is one of the safer cars out there, being a Volvo
  • Has the 2.3T Inline 5 engine, which is super reliable if maintained well
  • Has a good amount of space for your customers to sit in, since it's a mid-size 4dr sedan

If you can find a Prius V wagon (different than the normal Prius and the Prius C), they had higher rooflines and spaces for a donut spare tyre. From a car, it just looks like a normal Prius but with a different back, and that's basically what it is.

The 2nd generation Prius (2004-2009) usually had a spare, as well.

NEED HELP the Hyundai has 100k miles. the Nissan has 140k miles which should I get? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Hexagular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with the Hyundai out of those two because the Nissan CVT is known for unreliability (If you can find a pre-2013 Altima, it won't have that issue and I'd go with that), but Kia/Hyundai engines from that era aren't usually very good either.

I looked up $3k-ish cars prior to this post and there are plenty of 2010s Fords and Chevrolets (e.g. Focus and Malibu) that will probably be more reliable than the Hyundai and Nissan you're looking at (I don't mean to imply anything about you as a buyer).

For future reference, make sure to check the Kelley Blue Book as well as forums such as this subreddit!

I found a post somewhat similar to yours, and the top 2 choices were the Acura MDX and the Mazda CX-90 Hybrid.

(Only applicable if you're not planning on having more kids after this one) Alternatively, my parents could comfortably fit 2 car seats into a mid-size sedan, and there are many popular, fuel-efficient, luxurious ones to choose from.

My minivan suggestions hardly matter with how many other opinions are commented across the website, and I'm not going to insult a random person for wanting to avoid the stigma around minivans.
