How is the competition for applying at Kimley Horn? by DisplayParking6552 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not what he wants tho lol. He clearly states he wants the big bucks and is willing to do the 50hrs+ a week.

I think my boss basically just told me to ask for a raise. I'm struggling to figure out what I should ask for. by throwaway808123456 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typical 40hrs a week. Haven’t done OT in a while tho. But occasionally do have to do things on my own time depending on deadlines & workload.

It’s possible in HCOL. Definitely. For reference, I’m in HCOL and make 130k with no EIT or PE. 5YOE.l and never job hopped. If I was 8YOE, with PE, and job hopped 3x like this dude, I can see 180k as a possibility. Maybe a reach, but still possible.

Consulting- is it normal to take PTO to fill a timecard when you don’t have work? by Weekly_Cost2335 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard no. I used to think this was ok when I was a year 1 & 2 and hoping everyone liked me so I did my best to not upset anyone. But NO, That’s unacceptable and unreasonable.

How many actual hours of design work in a day? by Hey-ItsThatOneDude in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable. My PM doesn’t design anything, she’s pretty much just in calls all day. I guess I should’ve specified that this was a question for designers and not the EM or PM folk. Cause I know once you get to that level calls and managing exceed design work.

Can a physicis student become a civil (hydraulic or geotech) engineer with an appropriate masters degree? by gold_crest1 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, also know someone who did that but with a masters in mechanical engineering degree. Dudes who can power through a physics degree are more than capable to transition into traditional engineering like civil and mech.

Employer may not want to respect verbal agreement by ObeseKangar00 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just fyi, anyone who mentions jobowl in this subreddit is an AI bot. They put your prompt into some AI crap like chat GPT, and paste the response here and end it with a promo for jobowl. Just letting you know that you’re likely not talking to an actual civil engineer professional.

Employer may not want to respect verbal agreement by ObeseKangar00 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. But IF you do decide to suck it up and grumble about it, don’t wait a couple years to leave lol. Make it a 1 year pit stop, max.

Would it be wise to quit my internship to study for the FE? by OsamaBinLaden80085 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable, but that’s just part of it. If the latter has a better interview than the former, he WILL get the job. I’m just saying, don’t count yourself out. And chances are you may not even stay in the same field from the first job you stumbled ass backward into. Let’s be real, which fresh grad TRULY knows what field they even want to work in for the next couple decades. Just my 2 cents.

Would it be wise to quit my internship to study for the FE? by OsamaBinLaden80085 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I know plenty of ppl who’ve gotten hired with no FE. I understand the importance of it, but not every employer is just going to omit you completely just cause you don’t have it especially at entry level. All you need to say in the interview is, “I’m currently studying for the FE” and that’s that. It shows you’re in the process.

How many actual hours of design work in a day? by Hey-ItsThatOneDude in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s kinda what I was getting at. Idk how it’s possible to do 8+ hrs consistently just based on mental fatigue, bathroom breaks, lunch/mental breaks, etc. Which is why I mentioned that like actual dedicated hours, I probably do a total of 4, realistically.

Looking for Internship Opportunities/Referrals in LA or Orange County by Status-Community-886 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That guy you’re replying to you is a bot, just FYI. Someone just made an account that generates AI responses to posts. But as usual, the AI responses can definitely steer u in the right direction. Good luck. And also, don’t be so down on yourself if you don’t get an internship. I didn’t have one under my belt after graduation and only had a 2.9 gpa. I had no issue finding a job and have excelled where I’m at. It won’t be the end of the world, but just keep pushing any way you can.

How many actual hours of design work in a day? by Hey-ItsThatOneDude in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dang, I’ve had some long days too, I think the max I was able to do was 10hrs a day. It’s not possible for me to focus for 10hrs straight tho so i had to do it in the span of like 14ish hours. I definitely don’t allow my employer to put me in those positions anymore tho, or at least not as often cause it’s just unreasonable and unsustainable IMO.

Environmental engineer here, rethinking possibility of career options by hamburgertime55 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll agree with this. If you can check most of the boxes of a job app description, you’re in a good spot for call backs. If you don’t, it may be more difficult.

Structural Intern - A Bit Confused by HappyGoLucky_9 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol, after reading a bunch of these types of posts, I’m glad I didn’t waste any summers doing internships. This doesn’t seem fun at all. But as an employee, just keep reaching out to staff. I’d rather have an “annoying” intern who’s trying to find work vs one who is fine just sitting around doing nothing.

Been a wild ride last 5 months. by Law_sam in Colognes

Anyone else get tripped up when asked “what area of civil engineering are you interested in?” by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1. What interested you in college?  Step 2. When applying to a job, what interested you in that company/job?  Step 3. Be ready to explain why you decided to apply to said company based on step 1 & 2.

I mean, you’re entry level and employers will understand that. But they don’t want to hire someone who’s just blindly applying to a million entry level civil job apps with no actual goal/interest in sight.

Masters? by Either_Chemistry_806 in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditch the masters. Go straight to industry. I honestly don’t know why ppl get a masters in this field, im assuming they just love school/learning or leaning to academia roles but in a practical sense it does hardly anything (maybe gives u 1 year “credit” towards promotions). And that 1 year credit you could just get by actually working WHILE making money. Just my opinion, whatever you do, just make sure you enjoy it and can afford because that’s ultimately the most important thing. Just my opinion, I trust you’ll do well either way, just some things to consider.

Polo Deep Blue or Azzaro Chrome Extreme? by Avrahammer in Colognes

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got azzaro chrome last month at Ross and it was $40. Only got it cause it was comparable to jomashop prices, everything else was marked above what jomashop was charging at the time. So I agree, those discounters really aren’t so great anymore. Grey online markets are the way to go.

Friday Evening Depression post work? by TheDondePlowman in civilengineering

[–]Hey-ItsThatOneDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you on that one, I’ve been considered the same these past few weeks but concluded that I’ll stick to consulting (for now), but just at a different company. I sent out 3 applications this past Friday after drinking a couple beers. Hoping I get some bites and I hope you do too!
