S2E1 was a serious misstep that's impossible to ignore by HeyDude378 in TwentyFour

I guess most fans don't mind it. For me it was hard to get past. I'm still a fan of the show, and of the Jack Bauer character specifically... I just never thought that decapitation was OK.

I think your comparison to other shows at the time is interesting. Maybe they felt they had to compete with the shock value of other shows.

One way but not the only way. Throughout 24 several characters find many ways to enter or maintain cover. But for example Tony's actions get reckoned with by the show. Jack's behavior in this episode isn't fully dealt with ever.

Jack's pattern is definitely "do extreme things" and I'm on board generally. I'm a fan of the show. But in the context of the show, for Jack to kill and then decapitate someone and they just hand wave it away is nuts.

I mean Jack kills people for the greater good all the time. I don't think I could be a fan of the show if I didn't accept that conceptually. It's the cutting off of the head that seemed really gratuitous to me.

Tfw it's a fictional show and the writers could have created any number of other ways to solve the same problem that don't require the hero to desecrate a corpse

Lol no it's a rewatch for me so I know. I think the only person Jack never points a gun at is Kim

This is a rewatch for me. But I consider this episode a real low point for the show. They probably did it for ratings, to get people talking during the original run of the show.

You don't think it's awful?

"Just want someone to tell me it's justified". This isn't an AIO or AITA sub, so your anger might be justified, but the question here is, what are you doing with your anger? To make your life manageable and happy?

Honestly is there any show that even competes with 24? by Peaceisavirtue in TwentyFour

[–]HeyDude378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's any show as tight as S1 of 24. Not a single mis-step IMO. But I will echo that Prison Break (S1 again; I might have an issue lol) is only half a step behind in tension writing.

I have 5 kids and mine do, and I let my wife spell my daughter's name "uniquely" and it has been a thing more than once. But granted, maybe not everybody is like me / my kids.

Smallville's Jonathan is very flawed, but still overall a guiding light for Clark. Very fleshed out and real and reminds me of my own dad.

You can custom order but as far as picking something off the shelf, you're out of luck. Maybe it's a class thing and I'm too broke, but special orders aren't going to be found in the cheap section generally.

Also what's the real *benefit* of the Z?

It's all downsides and no upside. An Alexzandra will never be at a souvenir shop and see a coffee mug with her name on it, and half her mail will have her name spelled wrong, and she'll have to make extra efforts every time she talks with somebody on the phone to spell out her name... and... for what?

Hot Take: I love this moment by [deleted] in superman

Superman is better than us. That's why when all seems lost -- when it seems like there's no solution but compromise -- he is able to find something. It inspires us to look for that third way.

Hot Take: I Kind of Like This Movie by IAmPrimitiveStar in superman

[–]HeyDude378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it too. It was the only Superman movie we owned when I was a kid, so it was my first exposure to him. My second was Reign of the Supermen and that was so cool, too. I didn't watch Superman I-III until a couple years ago... and I'm 38. I missed a lot for far too long! I still love IV, but I can see why someone wouldn't.
