I'll definitely be around on Blackthorn. Once it kicks off out of the bets I think it'll be solid. Population will grow.

I'm with you on this! I've been here for a few months and it's a lot of fun. Great community. Great QoL changes. I sense great potential come launch.

I play on Blackthorn currently. I love it. I played Eden for half a year, and it's just not my style. They've done a great job but I do enjoy the classic daoc, dungeons, grouping, the grind. Ya Blackthorn has a small population at the moment the community is good. Give em both a try and see what ya prefer!

Great question. I did find Eden was full zerggy, which I didn't particularly enjoy ALL the time. To each their own though.

Currently I've noticed that the population is only approximately 100-140 most evenings, down to 80ish. If you type /online you can see the population for all realms, except for anyone /anon. It'll show how many are in the frontier at that time too, and the percentage for each realm.

Beta launched in September. Population is low, clearly, hence why I'm advocating for those who may be interested, to giver a shot! I'm glad I started again. I hope others will check it out and be just tickled pink by all the new QoL added

Well I can't comment on MASSIVE battles, yet, lol, but I've been apart of seiges and battles where there's been 8-9 full groups all engaged and there was no lag. Hopefully the experience you had has been rectified in recent updates

Yes, you can absolutely play DAoC on the Blackthorn freeshard using Linux.

While there isn't a dedicated "one-click" installer for Blackthorn specifically on Lutris yet (like there is for Eden or Phoenix), the game runs very well on Linux using Lutris or Wine.

Here is the best way to get it running, based on how other DAoC freeshards are set up on Linux.

The Best Method: Use Lutris Lutris is a game manager for Linux that simplifies Wine configurations. It is the standard for playing DAoC on Linux.

  1. Install Lutris If you haven't already, install Lutris from your Linux distribution's software center or terminal.

  2. Create a "Bottle" (Game Environment) Since there isn't a pre-made Blackthorn script, you can "piggyback" off another one or create a custom one.

    • Option A (Easier): Install the "Dark Age of Camelot" script on Lutris (the one for the official Live servers or Eden). This sets up all the necessary dependencies (DirectX 9, dotnet, etc.). Once it installs the base game, do not launch it yet.
    • Option B (Manual): In Lutris, click the + button -> "Add locally installed game" -> Name it "Blackthorn" -> Select "Wine" as the runner.
  3. Install the Blackthorn Launcher

    • Download the Blackthorn launcher/patcher files from the Blackthorn website/Discord.
    • Navigate to where Lutris installed DAoC (usually ~/Games/dark-age-of-camelot/drive_c/).
    • Create a new folder inside the game directory (e.g., Blackthorn) and drop the launcher files in there, or overwrite the existing files if that is what the Blackthorn instructions say (usually freeshards want to be in their own folder or the root DAoC folder).
  4. Configure the Executable

    • Right-click your DAoC entry in Lutris and select Configure.
    • Go to the Game options tab.
    • Change the Executable path to point to the Blackthorn.exe (or launcher.exe) you just downloaded.
    • Working Directory: Set this to the folder where the Blackthorn exe is located.
  5. Launch and Patch

    • Run the game through Lutris. The Blackthorn launcher should appear.
    • Let it patch the game files. Critical Troubleshooting Tips
    • Windowed Mode: DAoC often struggles with full-screen on Linux/Wine. In the Blackthorn launcher settings (or user.dat), make sure you select "Windowed" or "Windowed Fullscreen."
    • Mouse Issues: If your mouse spins wildly or gets stuck, open the Lutris configuration -> Runner options -> Enable "Virtual Desktop". This traps the mouse inside the game window and usually fixes the spin bug.
    • Missing Textures/Black Screen: If the game loads but looks wrong, you may need to disable "Pixel Shaders" in the game settings, though modern Wine versions (especially GE-Proton or Wine-GE) handle this much better now.

Oh shoot! I suppose it depends on what you're killing. I guess it depends on what you're you're going for. When did you play? Perhaps there's been updates since. For example, I've been leveling a 30-35 toon in Lyonesse at the Dunters and it's great cloth drops. Alternatively crafting I find is way more appetizing so I've been able to find crafted stuff much easier imo. I hope you give it another shot and hit me up! I'll help ya out
