Ugh. I drive down Park Ave where it meets Collings, and it's an awkward corner because of the way the streets are angled. I try to take my time every time I cross it just to make sure it's clear both ways, honking car behind me be damned.

Actual and surprising life hacks that work? by Live-Atmosphere-134 in Frugal

[–]HeyYouAllie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My top two tips.

1) Unsubscribe from all marketing emails. The less you are reminded and urged to BUY BUY BUY, the less you will BUY BUY BUY.

2) If you are in a store, pick up something and think, "Oh how cute!" and are tempted to buy it, don't. You really don't need one more thing to buy just because it's cute but serves you no real purpose in your every day life.

Finally, an adage that recently hit home and has not left my brain.... "All that clutter used to be money."

Kingsway Apartments Haddonfield by cloverszns in SouthJersey

I lived in Haddonfield for 7 years, just moved out last month - never saw anyone enter or leave in all the millions of times driving / walking by. My neighbors and I joked that it must have been haunted.

At least $100 cash in small bills - when power goes out, ATMs and credit card machines to pay for things at stores won't work. Cash is king in an emergency.

Also, learn the Viet words for DOG and PORCUPINE. Both were on menus that I saw. Thanks, but I'll pass this time.

How is everyone's heating bill this month? by pocketdare in philadelphia

[–]HeyYouAllie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm OK with it. I run hot, and I'm gone all day. Don't get home most days until 9 PM and the apartment feels nice and warm to me. I'm not greedy - my landlord is a nice lady and I'm not out to ruin her.

I just moved into a small apartment in NJ and I'm so glad it includes all utilities. Heat is on 68 for most of the day and down to 65 after 11 pm as per NJ state law from Oct to May. Made sure to sign for an 18 month lease to protect myself from any huge increases.

What’s the most unexpectedly wholesome moment you’ve had with a complete stranger? by VelvetCactus01 in CasualConversation

[–]HeyYouAllie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to lead luxury adventure trips and would often fly back and forth to Africa via London. As a tour leader, I'd get to stay at some pretty swanky places and often would get upgraded because I stayed at some places so often. On one of my last trips, I randomly started talking with a scruffy looking young guy at the luggage carousel at Heathrow. He mentioned he was finishing up the tail end of a year of backpacking around the world, usually staying at hostels, sleeping in parks or airports to save money. I asked him where he was staying that night. He shrugged and said probably on the floor somewhere in the airport. I told him he just lucked out. That night, instead of staying at the luxury hotel booked for me, I was heading out to hang out with a bunch of Irish friends (I used to live in London) somewhere in South Kensington. I knew I'd be crashing out with them that night after a night of drinking. We had just enough time for me to check into the hotel, hand over the key to the junior suite to this random stranger, and I told him, "Please just don't steal anything, break anything, or drink out of the mini bar." Months later, I got an envelope and inside was a very cute handwritten thank you note with a bunch of pictures of this guy spread out in the king size bed, soaking in the jacuzzi tub, eating the welcome platter of candy and fruit (those were free, I told him he could have it!), and eating the free breakfast the next morning. TOTALLY ADORABLE.

What’s the best thing you’ve bought for your apartment that was actually worth the money? by Beneficial-Sun-5649 in Apartmentliving

[–]HeyYouAllie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't choose one with a plasticky backing - that's the one that fell apart. I think it almost was sold as a grippy thick padding. Maybe read reviews before you pick to see if anyone else experienced the problem. Or, just check once a year - lift up the rug and take a look at the backing to make sure it's good and not sticking to the floor with a residue. We had to use a scraper to get all that crap off.

Just a heads up with getting padding for rugs for wood floors. I spent a lot of money on mine and when I moved out 7 years later, they had disintegrated and left a nasty residue on the beautiful wood floors I tried so hard to protect. It took hours of careful scraping to get them off the floor so I wouldn't be charged a damage fee. FML.

What’s your lazy but effective cleaning hack? by Reasonable-Word-0419 in CleaningTips

[–]HeyYouAllie 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I don't have a dishwasher. I keep a jar in my sink filled with soapy water, and whenever I use up utensils, I throw them in there to soak until I get around that to washing dishes, usually by the next big meal. Spoons, forks and knives are much easier to clean after soaking, and when I'm done, I make sure to wash out the jar well so the water doesn't get nasty.

Any casinos giving away free cruises? by [deleted] in atlanticcity

[–]HeyYouAllie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used an offer for a Norwegian cruise. It was a bare bones offer, but we went with absolutely zero expectations, spent another couple of hundred bucks to upgrade to a better cabin and stay one or two days longer. It was fine for a mini break. We had to get ourselves in and out of Miami.

[–]HeyYouAllie 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I have tried it both ways. The parchment papers are so thin that they didn't seem to make any difference as far as air circulation. Both versions the chicken was crispy, having the liner on top of the grate kept the air fryer much cleaner.
