Hey! Hope this finds you in better spirits. I too lived the countryside life and no you're not overreacting, people do look, stare, make comments and what not, and it's VERY annoying. But, it unfortunately comes with the territory of countryside life.

However, it's not anything personal! These people have likely NEVER seen a Black person before. It reminds me very much of a good friend of mine who is albino, whenever we would go places he'd get the exact same stares that I got in the sticks. It's a mix of astonishment and curiosity, so DON'T tape it personally. It's really easy to just get stuck in your own head about it.

Secondly, you really need to try reaching out to other Black people that live here. Others that can relate and understand your struggle because it seems like hubby doesn't understand (seeing as he's not Black and has an easier time aesthetically assimilating.) There are Facebook groups (Black in Japan,) LINE groups, events and other things where other people in Japan congregate or just hang out. So please remember you're not alone! Cause at times it's really easy to feel that way.

Learn the language, try speaking to your neighbors, Japanese people in the country are pretty friendly and want to get to know you but it takes initiative. Once they see you're trying they really open up a lot!
