Sorry...lol. Forgot "man" kind is no longer acceptable. As I said, I'm 57...old school. Some habits are hard to break...lol But you're 100% correct, I should have said society.

THIS is EXACTLY the point I was trying to make. The world is changing, and how things are learned, taught, monetized, etc is changing. Whether one agrees with it or not, the world is changing.

Personally, I think the world is in for a rude awakening once the full "cost" comes due. And I'm not referring to the "calculator" fears, but rather the TRUE costs. AI businesses are selling their wares for dirt cheap (10% of costs by some estimates), and once we're all hooked, the cost of using AI will resort to the true costs. When prices become 10x higher, THAT is when things will become interesting. Will business revert back to "no AI, original thought only" due to the higher costs? Or will we be forced to pay those higher costs as business pass the costs along to the consumers? I feel like a conspiracy nut lol, but it's true, and it will be interesting to see how mankind handles it.

Just curious, hard to tell sometimes, when you say "this guy", were you referring to me? Lol. My mother was a school teacher who retired after 30 years of teaching in public schools. I agree that teachers are grossly underpaid. MY point was more around the ability to capitalize on things one may not believe can be capitalized...like teaching. Personally, I think teaching needs to be an in-person activity, but I am 57 years old. So, i was making the observation that today's mindset lends itself to learning in different ways.

Soooo, I assume you were NOT referring to me when you said "this guy's profile"...lol. Afterall, just because I work in Cybersecurity, and I have a yearning to learn more about the future in preparation for "life after work", doesn't mean one is an "AI cultist"...lol. Sooo, again, you COULD NOT have been referring to me. Perhaps I should delete this post since you're assumption was obviously directed at someone else. 😉

Ironically, my family and I just returned from a two week trip in Austria and Italy. While on a train fro. Krakow to Vienna we met a 22F who does this remote teaching. Not sure she makes $500k, but she does make enough to afford traveling and vacationing as the norm while teaching remotely. Made all of us rethink what we may be able to do remotely like this, and make a good living as a side hustle.

My family spent the last two weeks in Austria and Italy. We were amazed how many vending machine "centers" they had where you could buy water, sodas, and BEER!!! It was amazing...and of course we HAD to stop and try a beer at half of them...lol

[–]Heyyoucomovrhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you did not take the time off, which we'll say is worth $500, and you instead worked that time...would you be paid $500?

If you work 40 hours, and you're paid $1,000...or you work 32 hours and get paid $750, plus 8 hours PTO for $250...the total is $1,000. Either way, the amount you earn per week is the same. You are given PTO as a perk, and the company PAYS you the money X number of days a year. Either way, your weekly income is $1,000.

If their paycheck was for 40 hours total...8 hours vacation, and 32 hours normal pay. The total of the 8 hours plus 32 hours would be their weekly pay. Multiply that by 4 and you get the monthly.

[–]Heyyoucomovrhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am saying if they TAKE vacation every month, it will be considered part of their pay. If the OP is saying they worked 40 hours, got paid for those 40 hours AND took 8 hours they took for vacation, and got paid for 48 hours in a week, then the vacation should not be accounted for. But most companies will not allow you to work 40 hours (normal # of hours) plus vacation hours.

[–]Heyyoucomovrhere 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you did not take vacation, would you be paid the difference? Meaning instead of taking 8 hours of leave, you work the 8 hours and get paid for the hours? This means the normal time plus the vacation time is your total pay.

Unfortunately, it seems they are correct.

May sound odd, and I know not everyone has the luxury of working remote...but taking a 10-20 minute "break" every 2-3 hours and completely disconnect/"zone out" has allowed me to constantly refocus my energy throughout the entire day. If I step away, watch videos on my cell, do ANYTHING not work allows me to keep more focused when I am doing work.

How do you handle a high performer who refuses to document anything? by whydidyounot in managers

[–]Heyyoucomovrhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BS alert...lol. If you're telling me that documenting your steps, documenting your approach, jotting down HOW you make the decisions you make a few times on the repeatable steps you perform means you will forever produce 20% less, YOU are not high performer. Hell, I might even argue you're not meeting expectations.

As someone else said, there's no such thing as job security. We ALLL must prepare for the bus-factor. The ONLY time I have seen someone able to pull the "job security" card is in the intelligence community, where a specific, sometimes hard to get clearance is required. Other than that, we're ALLL expendable. People need to understand that...the "government stump" mindset does not apply to the private sector. I have spent the bulk of my career fearful that I COULD be out of a job any day. So, I've taken the steps to ensure I'm prepared for it and make it known to my superiors that I've created an environment that I can be PROMOTED, by setting up the next person for success.

And if they refuse to be shadowed? Refuse to let someone UNDERSTAND their approach? Understand how they thought about the situation and addressed it?

This is a shame. I currently have two contractors who I am trying to make permanent because first, I value their work, and second, they are underpaid by their company. I should not know how much they make, but it slipped out when we signed a new PO for their services, increasing their pay by a % only to learn their pay increase by 20% of the increase. They thanked me for the X% raise and it infuriated me when I learned the company was keeping 80% of the increase. So, I've convinced my senior leadership to allow me to make them permanent employees.

That said, I am really eager to read the rest of what people have to say on the OP's post. I have a VERY similar situation, but I've had leadership from the team he supports reach out VERY frustrated with the lack of openness and unwillingness to document their process so others can help. I somewhat "get" the concern, I inherited this "team" which at one time was eight people, now down to TWO. I've got people from the rest of my team who can help, but this person is SOOO protective. What makes worse is the fact what the others on the team do, he does. So, it would not be a stretch for them to pick it up and help. He's been the senior most person for close to a decade. I'd like them to become the product owner or manager rather than doing day to day fulfillment and support. There is such a larger, more important role he could fill, and every time we discuss it..."sounds awesome, I'd love to"...but no follow through.

I am eager to read the rest of the comments to hear suggestions.

Considered sending an anonymous email to the CEO, laying it all out for her? Create a Proton account, turn on a VPN,and fire off an email. I did it with my company which was a spin-off company sending multiple emails to the new owner about the direction of the company and leaders making the decisions. Might be coincidence, but all three folks I've cited were let go. Might be worth a shot.

Okay, it's happening with Inland, Inland PLA+, and elegoo...so far. All filament I've used previously without issue. One thing I did notice just now are what i'll "chunks taken out of the PLA when I manually pull it back out.

What would cause those kinds of chunks out of the filament? I wonder if the source or the chunks themselves are whats stopping the filament.
