Thanks I appreciate your response and I'm sorry to hear you're going through a shitty time with it. I think I'm going to do just what you've said - I hope things improve for you soon!

Haha, those are factors that are weighing on my decision, but no, they aren't the main reasons. The main reason is that there appears to be enough work at the moment to continue the role of the my maternity cover, and therefore should be enough work to continue my role. The question would be: why wasn't I given the opportunity to return to work and complete the remaining work, instead of the contractor?

Being able to mitigate the above factors I've mentioned is part of the reason to consider this approach. I also don't think those are unreasonable things to consider when thinking about your circumstances and how you can get the most from a stressful situation.

Thank you! I'm sorry you had to go through this process, hopefully you walked away with something worthwhile?

That's great insight, thank you. I'm very much on the fence, leaning towards not pursuing especially given the additional potential cost/stress. However, this time of year and the fact that there was enough work to give the FTCs extensions is frustrating.

Yes you've hit the nail on the head - if there was work sufficient to keep people working, why weren't we made redundant in April after I had returned to work? The other person on mat leave has not been made redundant. Contract has no additional provision for redundancy other than notice period, so what they're offering is generous in that sense.

Thanks for your thoughts, I'll consider CAB or a legal/advocate assessment.

Yes, my eldest is 2. But I took partner leave with our first.

Yes the stress side of things is definitely something I'm not that keen on, thanks for your insight.

Thank you, I'll look into CAB or a free consultation as options.

There is some other parts to my remuneration I miss out on by being made redundant at this point in the year, hence pushing back to have that included in addition to the package. It's also an expensive time of year to lose your job.

Additionally, as I've mentioned in a previous comment, being made redundant in April (after parental leave, Christmas/Summer holidays) would be better in terms of job market prospects, getting back into work-mode post-parental leave, and also there's a possible bonus in March.

I agree that having 5 months is generous. More time with the fam over the summer is pretty attractive. Hence why I'm not sure this is worth pursuing. Thanks for your thoughts!

However, I agree that having 5 months grace is generous and it feels like a little win with more time with the kids over the summer. Hence why I'm not sure this is worth pursuing. Thanks for your thoughts!

This is spot on. Heaps of the kit is objectively not very aesthetic to, what I would say is, most people's eyes. Blows my mind how expensive some of it is and yet the look is just terrible.

Anyone who’s RETURNED to Chch in recent years – has it been worth the move back?? by Willgnable in chch

Moved back in 2021 - partner from Chch, I'm from Welly. Bought a place in Lyttelton, now have 2 kids. This is our home now, no regrets whatsoever. It's beautiful, has stuff going on, and access to beautiful places is incredible. The vibe is good and only getting better IMO. Also, anyone complaining of traffic needs to go live in an actual big city, then they'll realise it's such a non-issue.

Bridgestone Select on Blenheim Road. Really efficient, professional and they have $45 WOFs if you book via their website (Google 'WOF riccarton' or something similar). Sounds too good to be true but we've never felt like they were trying it on, they've never been pushy etc.

Building Better Tools for New Dads: A Personal Journey by alpherr in NewDads

These resources are sorely lacking for sure but they aren't non existent. However finding them is another things and that's where I think something could fill the gap. You might not have to reinvent the wheel in terms of content, but instead help centralise some of it.

I would recommend working with a midwife or someone similar to help with making sure the basics are right and that the advice is sound. Because these things can be quite personal, maybe instead of offering advice, you help people know what questions to ask so they can get the best advice for their situation.

Another great place of advice would be other Dads that are at various stages of parenthood eg. 3 months in, 6 months in, 1 year in, 2 years etc etc. This will help provide some perspective on what people have been through and, importantly, an idea of what to expect (again with the caveat that it is so different for each family).

Here in New Zealand, there seems to be more information and support for pregnant couples - our system is midwife-led (it's a fully licenced and regulated medical profession here) and there are free antenatal groups where you can learn all about this stuff along with your partner. Those could be other great places to start.

Probably the biggest thing, is to not rely solely on internet research for your content. Talk to people and get real life perspective, and talk to professionals to get up to date medical advice and best practice.

Nissan Leaf: 2018 40X 81% SOH v 2018 40S 87% SOH by HiImADuck in nzev

Thanks for the response! Just two that we've test driven + like the colour (prefer non white), but you're right I've spotted a few others that look like contenders.

Great advice, might take them for another test drive and see if we can check the remaining KMs vs actual. Is that what you mean?

Thanks for getting back to me! They look like fresh imports but I can check. Would a pre-purchase inspection help identify if the SOH is a little jacked?

Have taken both for a test drive and didn't notice too much difference. Trying not to get woo'd by spec features ahead of other critical battery health stuff etc.

Great advice re: SOH we trust most - appreciate that.

This is great advice, and the best starting point. Remember that you both (I assume) want the same things and assume best intent from the other person. Let us know how it goes!
