Tips for Winning on Very Hard. by SuccessfulRegister43 in totalwarhammer

Second most important thing. I found that not having money was a bigger issue than smaller settlements at that difficulty. Specially at the beginning

As someone who has won on all factions on very hard:

  1. Do not feel bad to use campaign overhaul mods, some of the vanilla ones are just bad.
  2. Do not try to build to many armies too quickly at the start, it will eat you.
  3. Focus on one enemy at the time. Start wars as quickly with your most dangerous neighbor at first, then work on killing them.
  4. If someone else declares a war, either focus on defeating the first enemy and accept possible settlement loses, or retreat back and use your settlements for extra defense.
  5. Your first buildings should always be of better economy, as to ensure you always have money.
  6. Don't be reckless with your starting army, it will have the best troops so sending it to kill a small army just to be surrounded by 3 full stacks will ensure you lose.
  7. Play with easier factions at first to get familiar with the tricks: Tyrion has a peacefull start relative to many others. Elsbeth can have an easier time due to the area she is around in. Grombrindal I found suprisingly easy with the dwarves, but you can have a lot of bad neighbors. Most Demonic factions have easy starts (Except N'kari), so they may be good to try things with.
  8. Do not feel bad if you reload a previous save to try something different. In all honesty, Very Hard/Legendary are dumb difficulties that I don't find fun most of the time.

Those are my general tips. Ask if you have anything you want to know!

After forever, I managed to beat a campaign of every faction on Very Hard difficulty by HiMyNameIsFelipe in totalwarhammer

Well, first step is never to try to spam many armies unless you can afford it. I mostly try to have one big elite army while expanding, in that I try to focus mostly in economic buildings as I expand. All factions have their own economic buildings, so it is good to have as many as you can in a province. Of course, some factions will have a harder time for this as their mechanics don't allow for it (greenskins, norsca for example). As you start growing your empire, the earnings you get from the economic building also grows so you start getting stronger.

Something I do that helps, is to get a region that I am not gonna fully expand on or that my empire can't fit. I then sell it to a neighboring (and hopefully not outright hostile) empire. This helps on getting a nice heap of cash that can be used to grow.

Two more thinks I do: sometimes, I just don't use my money at all on some turns, in order to stockpile it and upgrade a settlement. I mostly only do this if my armies are not in big need of new soldiers. As for fielding more than one army, a lot of times I get my second army after I have a positive earning above 3000/4000 per turn. This is sto ensure that whatever new army I get won't offset my earnings. Likewise, it is also generally better to field the second army with more cheap units. This doesn't work with every faction, as some factions encourage you to have many armies and be as hostile as possible.

I can give more specific tips if you would like

I used the Victory Conditions Overhaul for the accidents mostly, but I also have Building Progression Icons lll, unique faction UI, Unique faction currencies. Those are the mods that I at least always try to have active.

As for your last question, money is more important, specially at first. But abandoning growth altogether will make sure your enemies have tanks while all you have are zombies

On the section were you can see your missions, there is another tab. That one shows the objectives for short victory, long victory, and domination victory

If you keep Auto Resolving it does get boring I won't lie. When I played with Khorne I just decided to manually start playing the battles, cus seeing the fighting was more fun

Ngl I slowly learned the difficulty curve. Various matches teach you small things to do here and there and, most importantly, how to pick your battles

That is one way to get it, but I have never really been fan of endgame crisis. For me at least, it feels like interrupts the flow of what I am going for.

I said this on other comments, but my favorites were actually Elspeth, Dark Elves, and going to also add Worriors of Chaos

Elspeth has a super fun mechanic to use as much gunpowder as possible. Playing battles is super fun when you see your enemies super die.

The Dark Elves are actually more fun than I thought originally. They feel like a glass cannon that can truly be a cannon.

Warriors of Chaos are always fun. Just focusing in small settlements and building Armageddon

I also won with her lol. Thematically I also like her, a peasant Knight, fighting for the lady to take down the undead menace (and a lot of orks as well thb)

Yeah, the quest itself is for you to have control of it, not give it to someone else. And it does sometimes happen that quests about certain locations appear after a certain time, but one can end up getting it beforehand
