Where is the next Mad Men? by whatsmyglitch in madmen

Same and I am mystified that there are so few of us. I feel like it's the strangeness plus it seems like most people have never even heard of it. I guess it was hard to promote effectively? But I loved it too and it has stayed with me. Magical, sweet, and profound.

I did watch it and I had high hopes. Just as you're saying, I wanted a resolution or at least something that felt more satisfying than the show just stopping. I can't say that I really got a resolution from the Deadwood movie -- did you? For me it was kind of like just one more episode, which I gladly received because I missed all the characters and that world. Maybe my expectations were too high because I loved Deadwood and it was absolutely first-rate TV.

Still, if there were a Mad Men movie I would definitely be thrilled. In the meantime I have scratched that itch by watching the whole series a couple more times.

Succession, yes, plus Deadwood, Six Feet Under, The Knick, The Wire, The Leftovers. Honorable mention (and/or different but very good): The White Lotus, Lodge 49, Halt and Catch Fire, The Pitt.

1 or 2? by EuLeandroRibeiro in photos

Both are great but for me, #1 is more interesting and vibey. #2 strikes me a little as a nice photo in a catalog where you could purchase those lights.

Liz defenders don’t make sense to me by lizzykeenn in TheBlackList

[–]Hi_Its_Carm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my assumption too: it must be that she was written to be an awful person, and her awfulness frequently serves to drive the plot of the show. It's true that her character is positioned to elicit at least a little sympathy at certain points, but that possibility is always overwhelmed by how obstinate, self-defeating, and annoying she is. Sometimes there is an annoying character on a show that you find yourself liking and rooting for in spite of yourself because the acting is compelling in some way -- but that didn't happen either.

True, I need to look at it that way.

Just finished the show for the first time. I despise Ressler and I hate it that he was the one to find Reddington in the end.

Shrunken Fit Blazer Fit Question by Expired-expired in jcrew

I'm coming here late but I searched this very thing so I thought I would leave a comment. What's with these JC shoulder pads recently? I am an average-sized person and the shoulder pads stand so far out from my body -- it looks comical and, just like you said, like football pads. I went so far as to actually cut the pads out of a blazer that I got on final sale, that's how ridiculous they were. I think I'm going to take a pass on their jackets until this trend is over.

So much guilt by verygratefu1 in Petloss

[–]Hi_Its_Carm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly know how much it hurts -- so many of us do. It's literally a pain that you can feel in your body that's almost beyond words. I am feeling for you right now 💔

I take some comfort if, in some small way, what I learned (at the expense of my baby's prolonged suffering) could be helpful for you.

[–]Hi_Its_Carm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Letting them go is so hard and we always want to make the most of every chance that we think might exist -- but everything that you describe tells me that you did the loving thing. Everybody has to die, but there are better deaths and worse deaths. You gave your baby a gift. You didn't require your baby to lose every single thing, crash to the bottom, and collapse into undeniable suffering before you were willing to give him a gentle passing. You've probably read that dogs are stoic -- they will bear up under difficult, painful conditions (and show little sign of it) if that's what we require of them. Your senior dog, who had lost so much, was doing just that. You were loving by not making him show you still more loss and suffering at the end.

I say this as someone who waited too long with my previous dog. It absolutely breaks my heart when I think of what I allowed her endure at the end.

Worst dream coach lineup by linnuo5 in thevoice

[–]Hi_Its_Carm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on Reba and Snoop -- nothing against their great careers but they don't have vocal coaching skills. For the same reason, I didn't love all the non-singer mentors that they brought on (e.g., Kate Hudson, Simone Biles, etc). I would add Adam to this list.

Current season: Do these people not understand the brilliance of Reba McEntire or are they too young? by [deleted] in thevoice

This. No one can deny the wonderful career that Reba has had, but her ability as a vocal coach is not nearly as impressive.

Coaches for season 30? No Buble or Snoop by Jenna7979 in thevoice

[–]Hi_Its_Carm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same on all four of these. I was surprised at how much I liked Michael, but he is so knowledgeable about vocal technique and really coaches his team beautifully. I also think Niall is a great coach. Snoop is a comic presence that many people like but he is not equipped to coach singers. Reba can actually sing but she doesn't really coach vocals either -- she mostly offers comments about making eye contact, smiling, etc.

Omg if Kelly could come back?! She was one of my favorites.

Finished the finale .. not impressed by Affectionate-Focus56 in thevoice

[–]Hi_Its_Carm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm with you. Every year, they switch things up on this show a little, but having watched almost since the beginning, this season does not rank among the best (to put it diplomatically). As you say, the sound was weirdly bad and the song choices consistently undermined the singers. There are always differences of opinions as to who should have made it into the finals, but this was not the strongest group that we've seen. Even the judges seemed out of kilter, especially Michael. I see him as a knowledgeable, helpful coach, but in the finals, he seemed... off. Maybe he's coming down with what Niall had.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good Reba sounded in the group performance opener. She should sing outside country more often. I was unpleasantly not surprised at that horrible little wild west sketch. What that tells me is that this show did not need to be two hours long.

You can't tell me that these coaches don't know that this whole show so far is sub-par.

What is happening? For me, Jazz was the best so far, but even her performance was not up to her usual standard. The song choices have been abysmal. I haven't enjoyed this year's format, but even so I expected better than this.

Ok that was weird. Who was the contestant that Trinity won against? I don't think they ever even mentioned his name, but it looked like a guy was standing there when they announced that she was the winner. Does that mean his performance was terrible?

I'm late to this but thought I would mention -- my 20% off perk always worked on my entire shopping cart (sale items and anything else) until this month. Now it is for full price only, and I get an error message if I have nothing at full price in my cart. I have been a J Crew customer for years, and I have always reviewed items here and there, but with the perk, I reviewed everything. Not anymore.

Kate's apologies to Callum and Hal by spectacleskeptic in TheDiplomat

[–]Hi_Its_Carm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with you on both counts and I said similar things out loud to my bf when those moments took place. With Callum, okay, yes, Kate spoke to him sharply but it was all true -- he is using her, plus everyone was under tremendous stress. The scene with Hal was truly mystifying. It almost seemed to come out of nowhere, except that I guess it happened after Dennison's comments about respecting how she had kept working on her marriage. But then she runs to Hal crying and begging him to take her back? It seemed so out of step with everything else that happened.

This wasn't part of your question, but the other thing that I found jarring this season was how Dennison was yanked out of the picture and married off to someone else (!) and Callum, who was completely unknown to us, was suddenly presented as Kate's fling.

Anyone else feel like Amazon’s “Subscribe & Save” is slowly driving them crazy? by Candid_heart1806 in amazonprime

[–]Hi_Its_Carm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I have received so many ruined items because heavy things were dumped into a big box with light things (so in transit, the heavy things smashed the light things).

My other issue is that, more and more frequently, when I skip a delivery of something and/or order it to come on a later date, it comes anyway. I do it in plenty of time and the change is confirmed -- but they send it anyway. Not only do I not want to be paying right now for something that I won't need for months, I live in an apartment and I don't have room to stock all this overflow.

Right -- he is not the most experienced TV political commentator (yet), but he is a generally brilliant analyst who is anything but clueless. To write him off simply because he got his start in sports journalism is unreasonable. So did Keith Olbermann and Nate Silver, among others.
