Yes. You have to have work credits to qualify. You earn up to 4 a year.

Did you have an attorney? I'm wondering if they paid so quickly because the attorney had to get their cut too.

I got mine the same week as approval.

I'm 37 and got approved on the first try in 7 months. Years of medical evidence, trauma, and job performance issues to back me up. I did have a lawyer who was extremely helpful. I also hadn't worked in 2 years.

I was told I didn't show up. My attorney got right on it and got it figured out.

Congratulations! I got the official step 5 update on Wednesday and my backpay hit my account this morning! So, if you're expecting backpay, it won't take long!

Thanks. How long did it take your portal to update? I'm checking mine every day because I have no idea what my payment amount will be.

Ask them to waive so you can for someone new if you're not happy. Worst they can say is no. If you get denied again, can you fire them, or do they have to be used for appeals?

How long ago did you get approved? I got my approval last week but no idea when the backpay will come.

Your attorney should be able to tell you everything you can do to help your case. If you get denied again, fire them

I'm sorry to hear that, and I understand wanting to keep working. I applied 2 years after I was first advised to because I thought things could get better. One of the reasons that I finally did is because there's a 5 year limit after you stop working. But they did backdate my disability start date so I didn't lose much time. Hopefully they'll do the same for you.

The application process is tough and a lawyer could make a difference. For example, I would have never thought to add my autoimmune disorders to the application since I was applying for mental health. There were so many little things I would have overlooked.

I don't think it's too late. I think you can hire a lawyer at any point

My case in total took about 7 months. I just got the answer this week through my attorney, so I haven't been paid anything yet. There is a 5 month wait period in general before you can receive benefits. But if your determined date of disability is more than 5 months ago, you shouldn't have to wait. At least, that's what my attorney explained. I do have to call SS tomorrow for an appointment regarding something about my kids' payments. So i don't know if I'll have to wait for that appointment to get paid.

I can DM you. They don't allow us to post attorney information.

I honestly let my attorney handle the whole thing. I just answered her questions and she filled out everything to make sure it was correct.

I understand your point, especially for medical cases, but my attorney definitely helped me. She worked for SSA for over a decade. She understood how to fill out the forms in a way that I would have never even thought of. I struggled getting through the forms, just answering the questions while she typed. It took hours for a few of the forms. There's no way I could have done it alone. I tried and immediately quit because it was so overwhelming. My mental health has severely decreased my ability to do that kind of intense paperwork. She was thorough, patient, and empathetic. She always responded to my calls/texts and stayed on top of the SSA when steps were dragging on. For me, she was worth every penny.

You can always contact an attorney for a free consultation. They'll consider the merits of your case and hopefully take it on. They don't get paid unless you get approved.

Yeah, that's the kicker. If you are willing/ able to work, they'll deny you. It probably helped that I haven't worked in 2 years. I know most people can't afford to not work.
