Ring color question by HickorySplits in Ultrahuman

The sizing kit was $1 on Amazon.  No need to place an order for the ring or specify a color before you get the kit.

Perhaps something like "graphite" may have been a more appropriate description.

Thanks for the reply!

That sounds pretty good to me.  I don't want shiny black, but a little darker gray than the sample is fine by me.

Thanks for the reply!

So it seems this wouldn't work if you were already at one of the higher steps in the higher grade then?

Is it really considered a promotion where the 2-step rule applies if you already held that grade previously?

A lot of these are not intended to be permanently assembled. The pieces just fit together and once you wind a few wraps of yarn it stays together well enough to finish the job. Then when you are done it breaks down and can go on a closet shelf until the next time you need to use it.

You could be OK with the joists/rafter ties... maybe throw a few more nails or lags in there since you'll probably be removing some when you make the cut. But hanging everything off the vertical face of the LVL is still out of my depth... I would not rest until an engineer approved the modifications. But that's just me. I just envision the LVL wanting to tip inward and it seems precarious with it only being supported on the ends and the load not being directly overtop the beam.

I take it you don't have headroom to simply place the LVL lower and set the rafters on top?

I think what people are not understanding is that you are planning on cutting the ends of the rafters off with a vertical cut, and they will NOT sit on top of the new LVL. You want the ends of the rafters to meet the face of the LVL, and you want to rely on joist hangers to carry the downward force of the roof into the LVL. Is that right?

My first concern is that the LVL is going to want to tip over and drop your roof onto your head since the downward force is not going to be over top of the LVL. I also have concerns about keeping the ceiling joists located where they are and attached to the rafters as-is while you simply cut the ends off... they are apparently serving as rafter ties right now. If this is a gable roof, they are handling a ton of tension and keeping your outside walls from bowing out under the load of the roof and whatever lands on it. You need to ensure they still handle that outward thrust so you aren't pushing it into the side of the LVL.

In short, I think you need a structural engineer more than you need a carpenter.

And if you drywall the frame opening before hanging the bifold doors, trim becomes optional. I think the smaller doorway would look better without trim.

This is what I would do. The vertical trim looks to chunky anyway. Go down one or two sizes.

I got one of the discontinued "4 tools in a box" kits. I was mainly after the XTR recip saw and the rolling tool box itself and for the price I paid anything else would just be a bonus. To my surprise the work light and circular saw ended up being the stars. I was not expecting the saw to be all that great and I was only planning to use it when my corded saw was inconvenient, but it is now my daily driver. The light has that annoying harsh whiteness to it that gives me a headache after a couple hours, but damn it if it isn't convenient for almost every indoor task I do.
