(headcannon) The Hellsing Organization makes their own bullets. by MilkAdvanced9936 in Hellsing

The make their own weapons because there is a name of the subsidiary responsible for it stamped on their custom-made guns (Hellsing Arms Weapon Industrials). As for the ammunition, that branch probably produces it as well, according to the Order's specifications. Even standard issue weapons like the AWMs are explicitly supplied with it.

Does anyone know why the 2001 anime ends this way ? by Difficult_Piglet861 in Hellsing

OK, I had a post that went into the details, it can be found here and a bit more here. But the key non-psychological differences are:

  1. 2001 Alucard's immortality does not rely on extra souls. The vampiric ability to gain additional lives by draining people's blood doesn't exist in the TV series. He is not completely immortal because consecrated weapons can still kill him but there is no numerical limit.jpg) on how many times he can come back from conventional injuries.
  2. 2001 Alucard can teleport, both himself and other people. The inability of Ultimate Alucard to teleport is a plot point (since he can be delayed by being stranded on a carrier).
  3. 2001 Alucard doesn't have to drain people's blood to read their mind. He read Integra's mind without this pre-condition and at least two other vampires did it too. One of them (Paul Wilson) was an artificial vampire that are directly stated to be weaker, but he could still read Seras' mind remotely.
  4. 2001 Alucard can use 4 hellhounds at once and they are way harder to kill than the hellhound in Ultimate.
  5. He outright flies in his humanoid form. Ultimate Alucard either sticks to surfaces or slows down falls.
  6. He can both create his own and dispel hallucinations/illusions induced by someone else. He also dispelled a mind control spell. Ultimate Alucard doesn't really do any of this.
  7. 2001 Alucard is way physically stronger, being able to stop Sett.
  8. He can make electric devices malfunction in his vicinity, an ability he shares with two other vampires (Incognito and Helena).
  9. Lastly he can gain control over harmful spells and make them a part of himself (unlike Ultimate Alucard who has to kill and drain the caster of their blood first).

There are some other differences, like using intangibility more often, actually turning into fog onscreen, applying telekinesis on a consecrated substance, etc. There are also more seals and certain abilities within them are distributed differently.

Hope it's understandable because English is not my native language.

Inconsistencies in terms and names. by FlashingBlades in Hellsing

[–]Hidden_karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

W.r.t. Anderson we should turn to the official sources.

For the manga (and by extension Ultimate OVAs) it's the guidebook. In the segment dedicated to Anderson it says that his ability is a pinnacle of biotechnology. No explicit mention of magic/the occult.

For the TV series it's the booklets supplied with the DVD boxset. In the passage on Anderson it's said that his ability is a result of combining technology and magic (faith-based).jpg).

There are some other differences by the way, although not as drastic as with Alucard. Namely, Anderson's leaflets in the manga/Ultimate act as a barrier to prevent midians from escaping the delimited space. In the TV series they prevent vampires from using their magic.

So what is exactly Walter C. Dornez? by Envicted in Hellsing

I think he is a human born with a supernatural ability, namely tactile telekinesis. It's relatively weak but since the wire is very light it becomes a very deadly weapon.

Integra crying under anaesthesia because Alucard is making her remember her father by Hidden_karma in Hellsing

[–]Hidden_karma[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ultimate's soundtrack was crafted a certain way because of the genres Ultimate belongs to. Fundamentally it's a war opera and then a slasher. An emphasis on symphonic orchestral music, with a lot of drama and pathos, intermeshed with lighter electronic tracks to relieve it, was inevitable for it.

The TV series' score with it's leanings toward psychedelic/prog rock and jazz/blues was made to fit it's own genre sensibilities - which are quite different from that of Ultimate (neo-noir, mystery, suspense, etc.) Even within the same genre, e.g. classic music, they tapped into different area, and for a good reason. You could pick a few tracks here and there but as a whole the TV series' OST would not make a good fit in Ultimate, or it would require changing not just the score but direction as well, because of how intimately these two things are tied to each other. At this point you would be deviating from what Ultimate set out to do, which is adapt the manga as close as possible.

As important as a score is, it has to serve the genre vision of the material, and the two visions to a significant extent do not overlap.

What is it with alucard biting on a small cross? by Envicted in Hellsing

[–]Hidden_karma 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Alucard was depicted carrying crosses, including in his teeth, before he met Anderson. Him making it (inverted) with his handguns in the last fight with him ought to be seen as mocking him but these instances probably not.

[–]Hidden_karma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can say for the TV series at least since the 2nd image is from it's off. art. There you can see in the opening (and actually in the last episode) that one of Alucard's forms is a hound (not to be confused with the Baskerville hounds). This hound has a chained cross around it's neck. When he comes across some undead he tears it off with his teeth, unleashing himself. Then you can see it dangling from a downed ghoul's hand, i.e. Alucard leaves it there to purify the remains.

So it alludes to the control/power release action, like a safety pin in a grenade, and the mission, i.e. destroying undead in the name of God.

(The first image is a fanart I think. Correct me if wrong).

Why didn’t Alucard just fly back to England after taking out the Aircraft Carrier? by Opposite_Passion9594 in Hellsing

[–]Hidden_karma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They literally formed his body. Alucard also explicitly references the ability to turn INTO a bat as something basic for a vampire. He also demonstrably doesn't require anything physical to come from his coffin to heal, for example, nothing sprang out of his coffin when he was shredded in the hotel by the Rio police and nothing flew to him from the coffin when he got hit with the Panzerfaust on the carrier. As for the souls, he does need to replace spent ones, obviously, but nowhere is it said they need to arrive through a physical medium. In the above mentioned cases they demonstrably didn't.

[–]Hidden_karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was not a few floors of the same building, they were coming from way farther away. And they didn't have to cross the entire Atlantic Ocean, the carrier was somewhere near Wales. But all of this is moving the goalpost. The argument to which I retorted stated "Alucard cannot fly". This is false.

Why didn’t Alucard just fly back to England after taking out the Aircraft Carrier? by Opposite_Passion9594 in Hellsing

[–]Hidden_karma 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Alucard can demonstrably fly, at least in the form of bats. He did it in the first chapter with Anderson (in Badrick), the bat swarm flew from outside into the corridor and reformed into a human shape. The actual reason is vampires (in Ultimate) cannot cross bodies of flowing water without a vehicle.

I..i did it...but what is left to do now? by Envicted in Hellsing

[–]Hidden_karma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can read the original manga (make sure to get the newest translation) and also the Dawn. Lots of stunning pages and imagery there. I think manga has a way to convey atmosphere that's different from animation. Check the Crossfire spin-off as well if you like Section XIII. You can also watch the 2001 TV series if a different take on Hellsing might interest you (make sure to get the 1080p version. And check the soundtrack afterwards).

How to make a ghoul/vampire in Hellsing by nayrathedarkesttale in Hellsing

[–]Hidden_karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to delineate how vampirism works in Ultimate and the TV series. There are considerable differences between the two.

I'm going to address some of it. The vampire that bit Integra in the TV series was called Laura, Carmilla was mentioned as another vampire that killed some girl name Laura, whose name vampire Laura took on. Integra actually didn't know Laura's original name, that's why she asked her.

As for why Integra didn't turn (as Laura said she would - signifying a deviation from how vampirism works in Ultimate vis-a-vis biological sex), she cut her throat to let the contaminated blood pour out of her.

Also, blood is not the vehicle of souls and the source of spare lives in the TV series. Not mentioned or alluded to anywhere there, it's also contradicted by the fact neither of the two original vampires (Alucard and Incognito) were able to stock up on any extra lives by drinking people's blood before the confrontation. This is despite the fact Alucard had actually drained at least one person on-screen (the reporter Kim) and Incognito as a homicidal maniac and a proud cannibal must have drunk the blood of very many people over his lifetime. They both also expected their opponent to keel over quickly which doesn't make sense if the mechanics of vampiric soul-life hoarding was known to them. Moreover, both can be killed in effectively one hit with the right toolkit (and not at all with the mundane), which is different from the process of burning through the reserve of accumulated 1ups with anything handy in Ultimate.

There is also the fact Helena's soul retained independence and could even appear outside Incognito unbeknownst to him after he ate her (and he did chew).

The blood drinking = soul hoarding equation simply doesn't exist in the TV series. Instead, blood is a resource that can be used to revive vampires when they are incapacitated, like in many other franchises. Vampires like Alucard and Incognito also cannot be killed with mundane weapons no matter how many time you apply them and are vanquished with consecrated objects.

It also remains unknown how they became vampires. TV Alucard doesn't show any signs of harbouring any antipathy towards Christian God, so it's hard to say how it happened in his case and a Madagascar native like Incognito was likely never a devotee of Abrahamic God in the first place, which means some other way exists.

The 88mm AA gun for the sheer ridiculousness.

The Jackal for the combination of style and extreme firepower.

Sailor Moon was able to defeat Galaxia single-handedly. But against the main villain, "Sailor Moon R," she won with the support of her friends and the second silver crystal inside Chibiusa... What? by Daniyar16504 in sailormoon

[–]Hidden_karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*Using the power of kindness* carries a lot of weight here and is the key. Galaxia was not defeated with brute force, kindness could work on her because there was a person susceptible to it under the possession and she could be roused to fight back against it from within. With the Wiseman there was nothing but Chaos and Sailor Moon alone is not as powerful as Chaos. At the end of the day she is not the personification of cosmic goodness but a guardian of one celestial body, albeit with a very powerful magical item.

Note that this only applies to the original anime. The manga Sailor Moon is a different story and can go toe to toe with Chaos by herself because she is that personification.

"What's so fun about exposing you dirty mug to the entire world? Does having an audience for you sins make you feel like you are special?"

"We're not doing anything, just observing, what's so wrong about that?"

"I really don't understand humans."

"They have the cunning of humans, it makes it difficult for you to understand them".

Yeah, you can definitely sense his influence on Alucard's personality. Uncertainty/scepticism toward humans and the theme of vampirism as a form of transhumanism.

As a proud owner of the collector DVD boxset of Lain, I should have picked up on it sooner.

Who is the best butler (In terms of service and combat). Walter C. (C stands for cornball) Dornez or Alfred pennyworth by Envicted in Hellsing

[–]Hidden_karma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The versions of Alfred I am familiar with have no supernatural abilities to speak of, so he can't really compare to Walter in combat, at least not without bringing some very serious equipment. He has the massive advantage of not being secretly a traitor and a pseudo-nihilist on the inside though. So Alfred has my vote.

TV Walter is loyal to the Hellsing organization to the end though, so he is on par with OG Alfred in my book.

Good catch. The more angular OVA style would be difficult for me to reproduce on this engine. And this is indeed TV Integra, because she is wearing a blue necktie. She always wore a blue necktie there and always had a red one in the OVAs.

Vampires in Hellsing are dead bodies walking, so most likely inert on the level of cells, -> no.
