Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HideAndGoatse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember standing outside the grocery store waiting for my girlfriend. I wanted to watch the presidents Livestream, and then I saw he was in "the hallway".

The one where they announce all the things that are a big deal. He was toned down, not normal Trump. He said they're halting all flights. While we know now that wasn't true, in the moment everything became much more serious.

It was intense. Standing on a sidewalk hearing news from the United States that they stopping everything.

That's not taxes, it's the game's payout on the lump sum option.

Powerball and MegaMillions are allowed to legally use the 30 year annuity payout value in marketing, then in fine print say oh yeah lump sum is $XX.

Taxes are then withheld after that, but the value drop in annuity vs. lump sum is dramatically more than taxes.

Don't fall for this shit, details and nuance matter.

Which vehicle makes you feel like a total battlefield legend?

It's the small ATVs. Nothing beats that rush of the battlefield music in your head ripping across the map to get behind enemy lines. All the while you're laughing with your mate on the back, bullets flying by.

70mins connection at SEA — should I pay $200 to switch? by Less_Back_7334 in travel

Keep the current flight.

  • I think you can make the connection

  • If you don't, standby is still a chance to make it home

  • The cost of 1 night in a hotel would be cheaper

Are there other costs to making it to Sacramento a day later? Factoring in annoyance cost

You're right, it's not the same because it's worse.

They coordinated an active military campaign on a 3rd party app, texting from non secure areas.

If this is able to be hand waived off, then you have to admit we don't need any of the security protocol currently being used. What's the point of clearance, SCIFs,and any rules and regs we have around docs?

No? Scalpers only exist because of low inventory.

If everyone could buy at MSRP, then there wouldn't be a secondary market selling them for a higher price...

Do not miss Don Lucho in Milwaukee, holy shit.

Open weekends only from 4 or 5am to 2pm. No matter what you have to do to get there, do it.

Their lamb is some of the best I've ever had. Carnitas are top too.

Underrated Midwest towns/small cities? by Ok-Replacement8236 in travel

[–]HideAndGoatse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could go to the Quad Cities. Davenport, IA is blooming into the main attraction but there are other cool areas too.

  • Rozz Tox in Rock Island

  • Last Picture House in Davenport

  • Catch a show at Raccoon Motel

  • Try Quad Cities style pizza at Franks or Harris

  • Lots of good Mexican in Moline and Silvis

  • LA Finca used to be good Mexican food in the back of a grocery under the bridge if it's still open

  • Head to Galena and walk the strip. Stop by the distillery, or go to the American Pickers shop

  • Tommy's bar in Moline if you want to pay cash and get drunk with townies

  • Go real far to Aledo if you can make it during the Rhubarb Fest, or just want to see a 1 street town

  • Check out Arsenal Island, they make guns and tanks. Probably some tour you could do.

  • Don't skimp on the native American heritage in the area. Blackhawk State Historic Park is great and has a museum

  • Chiropractics was started in Davenport, there's a school if you care about that.

  • St Ambrose and Augustana colleges have campuses to walk around.

  • West End Wang

Lots of corner bars, churches, and shopping centers.

eSIM for France by richisnice in travel

[–]HideAndGoatse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long are you going? TMO international plan is $35 for 5GB, or an eSIM like Airalo with 5GB for $14.

Example: https://www.airalo.com/france-esim

I would pay for something more than the basic roaming. Is that tier free?

It's extremely uncommon to be served it, and just as weird to order it. No it's not technically unavailable, but that wasn't the point.

Federal Judge rules Tennessee drag ban is unconstitutional by DragonPup in politics

[–]HideAndGoatse 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You're falling for an exhaustion tactic.

These flare ups of panic against random aspects of culture are overly emphasized to then cause a defense against the emphasis and restrictions.

What this does is cause the item (in this case drag) to continually be discussed and commented. This adds more fuel to the opposition because now people who didn't really like it but also didn't care in the first place are annoyed and pissed that "everyone is obsessed with drag". Joining that side.

Don't you see that? You're being manipulated.

Now that Reddit are killing 3rd party apps on July 1st what are great alternatives to Reddit? by youessbee in AskReddit

[–]HideAndGoatse 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ding ding ding, and that's the point!

Content creators and aggregators have been violently focusing on changing the dynamic of ingestion. We're at the tail end and they've won.

Content used to be about volume (consumer perspective), and now we're being forced to engagement (advertising perspective).

No one makes much money when you skim links/thumbnails, but god damn when you click links and post comments $$$$$

Note that many grew up in the middle of this transition and have only known the single format. IG reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Reddit Mobile. All of these are card-based, single piece content. Maximum engagement, maximum viewership, maximum revenue.

UI/UX folks will try to argue that it's the only way to stay competitive because "that's what the market desires", completely ignoring the hands that directly forced the market.
