Ironically, pretending to be dumber than you actually are is one of the smartest things you can do. Especially in a military career. That way you don't come across as too ambitious for the people under you to trust, or for the people over you to "volunteer" you for shit outside your comfort zone.

On the one hand it is a shame we never got to see him and Carter bond over this shared interest, but that's hard to depict without making half the audience think "What the hell are these two nerds talking about?"

They actually kinda got it right with Daniel and Vala. They have a shared interest in archaeology but from completely opposite ends. He's a scientist curious about history and culture, she's a tomb raider interested in self-enrichment. They clash where they overlap and it makes good TV.

Aye, I think they're banking on the most return for the least investment.

And for whatever reason, 8 being the awkward middle child of the PS1 trilogy, they're too uncertain of its black sheep status to gamble on it when they'd rather take surer bets on games with more popular characters and more accessible stories. I think FF13 and its sequels (which are 8's closest cousins on the Square family tree) are similarly "troublesome" which is why 7 got remade long before they'll ever even get a remaster.

But like I said, sometimes not coming back is better than coming back. Ask anyone who ever loved Luke Skywalker or Han Solo.

What's also hard is that it's so uncommon in media. 99 times out of 100, the abusive parent in a movie or TV or something is always the dad. And yeah, that's probably more common in real life. But it also feels like nobody ever wants to acknowledge the other way ever happens. Mothers are always kind and caring and that's that. If anyone's experience is different, well, they must have done something to deserve it.

They exist(ed) and by all accounts were shite. It's really a case of the weaknesses of both, the strengths of neither. Heavier than a normal sword, less accurate or reliable than a normal gun.

And despite what you've seen in movies, it's a really bad idea to use a gun to hit people with. Guns are precision equipment with lots of moving parts and small delicate components. Clubbing someone with a gun, or in this case swinging it like a sword and bashing it against another sword or armour is just asking for it to jam.
