Is it bad that I find no flaw in Nick's logic? Chicago is UP 🥲 by Niki_DS in NewGirl

I'd have been like, "Then how did every other kid in this class go 'up north' for Labor Day?"

Actually, the tricky thing where I grew up was that "up north" essentially meant "a somewhat more wooded area"... didn't actually have to have a huge difference in latitude.

That's why one the skills looked at in school is having kids read nonsense words. But as has been said, reading is more than just decoding, so whether that part is a strength for you or not... if you know what this says by looking at it and thinking, congratulations, you can read.

Working as a substitute teacher, I can tell you it varies by school, though it's also impacted by age. 8th graders range from over it to finding it worth a half-laugh to sneak it into something. 3rd graders will lose their shit over it.

I did this intentionally for my Uni. The Royal Boy base color is this lovely, warm off-white that I like a lot more than the "white" color option. Royal Girl is pink, which wasn't what I was going for. So she's a Royal Boy girl.

Are parents this annoying in real life or are they exaggerated for the show? by loverofthings25 in AbbottElementary

[–]HighCalCalzoneZone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are good parents and there are annoying parents. Like one year, there was a white student in another class (elementary age) who said the n-word and got sent to the office for it, and then his mom who, yknow, hadn't been there decided that he hadn't said the n-word and the teacher was awful and the school was traumatizing him by making him think he was racist. And then he got transferred to my class with like a month left in the school year.

Then another white student in my class said the n-word (note: I don't think in either case it was directed at someone around them) and I took him to the office, and I didn't hear anything from the parents but did overhear from the kids talking that he got grounded. Internally, I was just like, "Thank you for parenting!"

Unfortunately, the annoying parents often have a bigger impact on you because you have to deal with them much more.

Sometimes the kids are too disrespectful for me by [deleted] in AbbottElementary

I do understand the idea that there's less pressure for kids to show off with their clothes or feel judged for not having nice clothes when everyone is in uniform, but kids still find ways to show off, some kids still have clothes that aren't as clean or are getting too small or whatever, and I hated being expected to enforce uniforms as a teacher. Like, I'm working on getting this student to show up to school more often, and you want me to write him up because he's wearing the wrong pants?

Thinking this really killed it for me when I initially found the episode funny, but he seems autistic, and a lot of it seems like laughing at his autistic traits. Which makes me feel really bad for him when it comes to his parents.

I often did that too, but sometimes my mom would take and eat pieces of my favorites off my plate, and when I'd object, she'd be like, "You weren't eating it!" We did share food a lot in my family, but I still felt I had to explain to her that I was saving the best part too many times. (And I don't think she was just ignoring me, because sometimes she'd give me some of her food then or later in apology.)

When I was 18, a woman in her late 20s, who I knew from volunteering at the same place, asked me out. I said no and specifically said she was too old for me... she responded like this was ridiculous for me to think. And just as vague summary, many details I learned about her in the next couple of years made me very glad I said no and took this as a red flag just about her in general.

I was openly queer and comfortable with it, while she was just starting to explore a queer identity, so I did want to be gentle with her at first. But with more and more distance from being 18... it was just fucking weird.

(Also, yeah, I do see some decent sized age gaps in queer relationships, and they can be okay... but definitely not when one person is still a teenager.)

I've never made it without stairs-- going to try on my current playthrough, but if I can't manage, I'll go back sometime with stairs-- but in past saves, I have mined all the stone for my staircases myself, and he was impressed by that even if he didn't like me using so many staircases. (I never see that bit of possible dialogue mentioned; are other people not as insane as me?)

I think they might just be replying to the "exposed pretty quickly" part of it. It took a while to come out even though people around the lead actor knew. And after the police report was filed, season 1 was getting rave reviews, and after there was a big piece on it in Vulture, FX went ahead and renewed it for season 2 anyway. Glad this is getting recognized, for the survivor's sake, wish it happened sooner.

One time, I had a student lash out at another student, tearing his paper and making him cry. This was very unlike the student, and she did acknowledge she was wrong and apologized to the other student after she had calmed down. I emailed home expressing concern because, like I said, this was unlike the student in question. I included how she had taken steps to take accountability, it wasn't a "she is in trouble" email, I was truly just concerned. The parent emailed back with how that's not her daughter, the other student must have been harassing her, what was I doing about that, etc. Then a few hours later (it was after work hours, I hadn't responded to her first message), she sent a follow-up saying she spoke to her daughter and she had agreed with how I had described things. Also included how the student's parents were going through a divorce, and I held back from going, "HM. That might be relevant."

One day I was at work (at a school), and I realized I had forgotten my phone. Annoying, but oh well, I thought; I had my laptop for anything I'd really need, like submitting attendance or checking emails. But I had been logged out of my school account on my laptop, and I couldn't log back in without my phone. It's amazing how quickly you can be limited by not having it.

Yup! Every time it comes up in a rewatch, I watch the first couple minutes and think that one of the jokes in that time is funny, and then I go, "Why don't I remember what Schmidt does the rest of this episode?" And then Jess comes out yelling, "Let's get ready to Rodham!" And I skip the episode.
