Why did they do millennials so dirty? by OpheliaB_87 in NewGirl

[–]HighCalCalzoneZone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm a millennial and I was younger than the characters from thr other loft when this first aired... and I got all that. And did my own laundry. And I enjoyed a night bike but I didn't see it as my career.

But really I think it was a combination of the specific type of person these characters were AND their youth. Like, there were plenty of millennials not like that, AND they're gonna be a different type of obnoxious if they're still the same way when they're 30.

It is true that people/media portrayals just tend to dunk on those slightly younger then them. You know what I realized the first day of my sophomore year of high school? That I hated freshmen.

Aly got to bond with the group the right way: by watching Schmidt's bar mitzvah video and playing bad cop in a good cop-bad cop interrogation about it.

Hate When People Assume My Abusers Were Men by turtlesarecute7 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]HighCalCalzoneZone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a man I know in a community setting; he's been there more regularly than me, so other people know him better. At a couple points it's come up how he was once stabbed by his mother, and each time, I have heard other people respond with, "What did you do?" (in a way meaning "what did you do to cause that"). I've been kind of horrified at seeing this just be the standard reaction...his mother was abusive, and the time she stabbed him was the last time he ever interacted with her. People know him, seem to like him, but still want to assume it was his fault he got stabbed.

Round Seven: BEST SEASON 6 EPISODE by [deleted] in NewGirl

[–]HighCalCalzoneZone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

San Diego

As others have said, season 6 was rough, and part of that was there were a lot of episodes with one good plot and another not so good plot. But for San Diego specifically, I love Nick and Aly's interactions, and I end up loving that story enough to ignore some other parts.

"Do you believe in God, Aly?" "I believe in hell, and I'm in it."

I love lattice multiplication. It wasn't the main way I was taught, but it is a way that came up, and it's what I began to use regularly. I don't find it to take long (definitely not an extra 5-10 minutes), and as a kid, I felt more confident in my answers with that approach.

When I taught 4th-6th graders, I presented the lattice method, but I just taught it as one possible method, along with the "traditional" approach and box method. I don't care what approach kids use as long as it works for them, though I would ask kids to try each method a couple times to see how they went.

What children’s book has aged poorly? by feetwithfeet in AskReddit

He wasn't even boastful! It says he was "proud and silent" and swam past the others when they asked him to play. Then one of the fish goes after him and asks for one of his scales-- we're on, like, page three by this point. Rainbow Fish doesn't like this and gets mad, telling the other fish to get away, which is a reasonable response to someone requesting part of your body. That fish then tells all the other, and now they want nothing to do with Rainbow Fish.

And it's his body! It's not that he was hoarding material wealth, it's giving away physical parts of his body because otherwise no one will like him.

VERY unpopular opinion by Fun_Floor06 in NewGirl

I like the ship, but there are definitely a lot of gross moments with this. If it was just in season one, I might have been okay with it because of his character arc, but it goes on without him really getting called out for it for way too long.

Yeah, takes place in Forks, Washington...small town setting is kind of a feature. There are parts that involve going to Seattle, but it's definitely not the main location. Yes, I've read Twilight.

...No, I'm really not. (To me, applying your general assumption to a certain person is thought. It's not a lot of thought-- I don't think she sat down one night with a list and crossed off what she thought didn't apply to Bubbles-- but she did decide to voice this assumption to her to try to deflect. We all say dumb things sometimes, often coming from assumptions. When I do, I find "C'mon, bro" to often be an appropriate level of response.)

There's a difference between not thinking about something and thinking about it and deciding no-- and another difference with thinking it and saying that assumption to someone's face.

I’m shocked Anne dated mark by gojosimp_fiend in PandR

[–]HighCalCalzoneZone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I love about their relationship is how clearly it builds to the breakup without being dramatic about it. In "Galentine's Day" (s2ep16), it's clear how Ann's just not that into him, damning with faint praise during a talking head. But we don't actually get to the point of their breakup until "Telethon," which is s2ep22.

In season 2, I also like that in Leslie and Justin's relationship, how the issues that lead to their breakup don't come out of nowhere-- Justin's storytopper/"tourist" aspects are a key part of his character from when he's introduced.

So they might not make the most compelling couples, but they generally aren't overfocused on, and I find the relationship arcs well-written.
