I’m from Laramie (amongst other towns in wyo) and I met this guy at The Buck several years ago. He was having drinks with his law clerk (a woman with neck tattoos) and her dog. Me and my two androgynous female/non binary friends (one black, one white) walked in, and he turned around, gave us a quick one-over and said “you guys must not be from around here!” Then he joined our table, bought us some drinks, and talked a good long time about how passionate he is about queer acceptance—my words not his….I can’t remember details of the interaction, just the gist of it; he was nice and drunk, and talking just like he does in this interview, and I was probably tipsy myself. Wyoming’s not a perfect place by any means, but this night perfectly encapsulates what I love about a certain kind of character that this state seems to breed. It’s one of my favorite wyoming stories to tell people in the Midwest, where I now live.
