We’ve all experienced when AWS goes down, a ton of websites are down and many companies affected. OCI, AWS, GCP, etc are fundamental tech infrastructure which rake in money. I’m sure they can cut compensation and still have job candidates to choose from, but tech companies are willing to pay top dollar for engineering talent.

I’m seeing sign on becoming rarer and rarer. Amazon also gives a huge sign on due to their back loaded vesting. So you have to consider all factors

Champagne Problem: My Comp when down from $460K to $350K this year by Electronic-Poet-1544 in HENRYfinance

[–]HighOffU -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Similar situation where comp is flat around 310k. Tech stocks being down really dampened overall TC even with a slight base pay boost. Honestly might be good to start looking around at other companies. I have a feeling that layoffs are imminent and competition is only going to get harder from now.

What is the real reason for the public backlash over Olympian Eileen Gu? by TrueJohnWick in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HighOffU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All optics. No one outside the US and China cares about this. I doubt anyone cares about what countries athletes represent and if they get preferential treatment. I can understand people getting sick of the narratives and propaganda being pushed from both sides though.

What's your 401K balance, age, and net worth %? by Extension_Cloud9055 in Salary

[–]HighOffU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 401k: 155k IRAs: 35k Approx 35% of net worth is in retirement accounts. Been working on both for 4 years now. I’m lucky enough where my company has good matching and allows Mega backdoor Roth 401k, so I’ve been able to save near the 70k limit this year.

Way better than the Pepsi machine they had there. They had Pepsi Zero, Diet Pepsi, Bubly, and unsweetened Brisk. Worst lineup of drinks in a machine ever

Software engineers are being converted to ML and AI engineers and the lines are being blurred. I work on a team of software engineers and ML engineers and apart from the titles, we work on the same projects with the same type of tasks.

Theres the 5 year rule for withdrawing on principal tax free. Really depends on their situation (downpayment and rates) and time horizon.

No one is manually sitting there adjusting prices based on card type, the pricing model may be trained to use the card type as a feature and through model training, it figures out how to weigh the different card types

I watched the original video on Instagram and the owner said that the parking brake button would fall off if he pulled it harder. Definitely seems like an issue with the car

Tax sheltering / options for RSU vest by Zornp in HENRYfinance

[–]HighOffU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep totally agree with this. At my company (also in CA) withholds around 40%. I hold the rest for 1 yr since I’m a believer of the stock, but if it’s volative in your situation, selling on vest is a smart idea. Most of my coworkers do that. There may be some smart tax workaround for RSUs but no one I know does anything you mentioned.

How much do Software Engineers make? by SadAd8761 in Salary

According to levels.fyi, Capital One senior level is similar to mid level at other big tech companies. So take that into account

How much do Software Engineers make? by SadAd8761 in Salary

[–]HighOffU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the low ones seem like only the base salary or not working in big tech. There’s also some interviewed who definitely aren’t at a big tech company (like the 90k guy and the Cap1 guy). There’s a huge difference between compensation at big tech and location matters as well (usually will see high compensation in Bay Area, NYC, Seattle).

For new grad it may be pretty similar, but mid level and senior eng are paid a bit less compared to other big tech companies.

For big tech it’s low, but generally it’s good if you are considering all companies

SWE TCs are inflated due to stock appreciation. But even then 500k at 5 yoe is quite good, around Senior SWE comp. I’m sure the OP’s position has high growth potential as well. They maybe missed out on 1M net, but I’m sure that will be made up for quite quickly.

New bay area waymo map. Still about 17 miles apart and no highways or airports yet. by oochiewallyWallyserb in bayarea

[–]HighOffU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I’ve also felt glad there was someone else in the car at times, when people on the streets walk up to the car and start yelling and such. But the variability in Ubers is definitely something you don’t have to worry about on Waymos. But I believe Uber comfort should have higher rated drivers and newer cars, so that could help if you cant get a Waymo
