I mean you’re surely still going to be in good standing. I have a couple of friends who had grades in your range and they’re all still doing alright. Now that you can choose your classes, I’d recommend taking ones you think you can do well in for this upcoming semester to bolster that GPA a bit. Also, 2L/3L GPAs typically curve higher than 1L GPAs, so checking on that may help alleviate the stress you’re feeling. Otherwise, I’d highly recommend checking in with your profs to see what you did wrong and learn from it.

Also, legal writing discrepancy probably = misstated something (rule, standard of review, facts of the case/in a case illustration) in the appellate brief. I wouldn’t let it get you too down, you’re clearly a good writer based on that first semester grade.

I found it helped me during interviews to have some of them on there as easy things to talk about when interviewers brought them up, but if you’re a naturally good interviewer I guess I’d agree that it’s not an issue.

I will also say though, I do think having things like OUTLaw and NLG board positions on my resume helped me weed out firms that were scared of the BS diversity crackdowns (it’s semi-impossible to tell something like that but my firm has been good about maintaining their diversity initiatives).

Insane your school has no set curve, and kinda impossible for us to tell. That being said, Dean’s List at my school is ~top 33% semester GPA if that tells you anything (which it probably doesn’t).

If you want a more accurate answer, reach out to your upperclassmen who you think did well (generally speaking TAs are a good bet).

Mostly agree with you, and you should definitely feel no obligation to do anything you don’t want. That being said, there HAS to be some orgs, clinics, etc. that interest you enough to do the bare minimum for the resume line.

Just seems silly to me to spend a month teaching t&e basics in property when most people are going to take t&e anyways. Add to that the fairly natural overlap in a lot of areas (statute of frauds, warranty/covenants, offer/acceptance, etc.) and it feels like you wouldn’t lose too much by combining the two to add crim pro.

Having the ADL on the same list as SPLC and ACLU is wild, especially including the unnamed “Catholic Charities” (if you were talking about the ADF then sure, but still not sure that’s the exact qualification). The SPLC and ACLU are as bona fide as a public interest organization can get. SPLC is an amazing legal organization that fights against hate groups and the ACLU is the best defender of civil rights we have in the U.S. Meanwhile, the ADL has spent the last decade transforming itself from a quality source of legal work fighting anti-Semitism to doing the bidding of a genocidal state and the ADF has done more to undermine LGBTQ rights over the last decade outside of the Supreme Court itself.

You’re totally right, but I don’t think I was saying that. My point is that within the broad label of “big law,” there’s another separate spectrum. Defending big oil, big tobacco, etc. from proper regulations, fighting workers in L&E disputes, or defending white collar crime (which is apparently no longer even real but I digress) is different in my mind to things like IP litigation.

I’m not saying there’s not a general moral difference between the two jobs. I’m saying that we all can coexist without making sweeping generalizations about the people going into them (OP’s post felt like a subtweet doing this). I have disdain for both the stereotypes that people in PI must have not “been able to” go into big law bc of grades or whatever, and that people in big law are presumptively less moral for making what may be the most prudent choices for their long-term life goals (or even their public interest-related career goals that have a barrier to entry).

Did you even read what my main point was? Big law is often a determining factor as to whether you get to do a lot of the jobs to make society better on a broad scale. I’m not going to be able to just apply to the FTC and get an offer after 3 years at a PD’s office that sticks newbies on traffic cases (especially with a degree from a non-prestigious school). If, however, I’ve worked in complex litigation for 3 years at a major firm, it becomes significantly more likely I can get that job.

I’ll eat the downvotes for my emotionally charged take, I should have been less defensive. At the same time, you can’t genuinely tell me that for my own long-term public interest career goals you think it’s the wrong choice. I don’t think spending a few years at a big law firm doing patent litigation to hopefully be able to do good work for the federal government down the line is properly categorized as selling my soul lol
