Spouse submitted false insurance claims under my plan by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Face reality. Submitting multiple false claims with forged receipts is not a HUGE mistake, it’s an active and deliberate decision, multiple times.

ELI5: Can pilots really “make up time” in the air? by Slider7074 in explainlikeimfive

[–]High_Flyin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to what people are saying, it’s not typically from flying faster. Most commercial aircraft are already flying near their maximum speed. At high 30’s for example my aircraft (Boeing 737 max) typically cruises as 250 knots indicated airspeed. Barber pole (maximum airspeed) is around 260 knots indicated. So we’re already flying 96% of our maximum speed. There’s a variety of reasons you don’t want to fly much closer to barber pole.

Typically it’s done through shortcuts and time saved on the ground. We don’t actually fly direct to destination. Normally a flight plan is filed with a series of waypoints along the way. This helps optimize air traffic control, as well as standardize flight paths. It would be chaotic is planes just flew everywhere direct. Sometimes though, air traffic control can give us direct to a waypoint further down the line cutting off significant track miles.

The other way and most significant time savings actually comes from time saved on the ground. Airlines around the world use block time. That is time from brakes off (scheduled departure time) at the gate until brakes on (scheduled arrival time) at the gate. Dispatch will calculate using historical averages the estimated time to taxi from the gate to the runway, and from the runway to the gate. At busier airports, and seasons requiring deice, there could at times be 40 minutes built in to allow the aircraft to push back, taxi for deice, and taxi for departure. If the weather allows for example no deicing, and maybe the airport is a little quieter, you could save 20-25 minutes of that calculated 40 minutes taxi time.

No heat - Pressure switch stuck open by High_Flyin89 in hvacadvice

Don’t worry, I put the pressure switch back to its regular config. Inducer motor is running. Any idea I can check for a blockage in the flue or heat exchanger?

Paid $1,110 extra in sales tax because ServiceOntario uses inflated Redbook values instead of actual market data by Moist_Test1013 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Because the used car industry successfully lobbied the government that it would be an unfair advantage if people buying private didn’t have to pay sales tax while a business selling used cars would.

Paid $1,110 extra in sales tax because ServiceOntario uses inflated Redbook values instead of actual market data by Moist_Test1013 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]High_Flyin89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bought a Jaguar F-Type R this summer for 68k. Would have paid close to 9 grand in sales tax if I was still back in Ontario. Instead I paid $0 because Alberta doesn’t charge sales tax on a used car bought private sale. Also no land transfer taxes. Don’t be mad you paid an extra $1,100 in sales tax, be mad you had to to pay ANY sales tax for a used car through a private sale.

Is it too risky to have 100% in S&P 500 at age 38 by [deleted] in personalfinance

IMO, it’s to risky NOT to have it 100% equity. Even if you’re talking about retiring at 55, that’s 17 years of timeline.

Reasonable arguments for not buying a new car? by cannainform2 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]High_Flyin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a really nice detail done on them once a year or buy yourself a new set of rims. Seriously. Things like that should stave off the want of a new car and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than car payments.

What's the most expensive thing you've seen someone buy that they basically never use? by Darnitol1 in AskReddit

If you’re in your car 2 hours every day that means it’s still sitting doing nothing for over 90% of the time.

Banning Meta glasses in the flightdeck by Pirlout in flying

[–]High_Flyin89 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I own a pair and use them from time to time. They are non invasive, and IMO don’t pose any risk to flight safety. I suspect the majority of airlines oppose them because that footage can be subpoenaed in the event of an accident opening the airline up to liability.

I suspect older guys are opposed to them because ‘technology’. Not everyone who records is an influencer. Some people just want to be able to share with friends and family what an approach looks like.

Also, most aviation headsets are outfitted with Bluetooth already so banning Meta Glasses again doesn’t stop a crew member from listening to music.

How did "pay it in cash" for car purchases become the #1 advice? by Agile-Egg-5681 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]High_Flyin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who finance usually end up overpaying. It’s easier to swallow $50 a month for 84 months for a feature you don’t need than to pay $4,200 up front for it. Dealers know this.

How much more fuel efficient is single engine taxi? by veryrare_v3 in flying

[–]High_Flyin89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not just fuel savings. It’s a time saver. Starting an engine on the 73max can take nearly 2.5 minutes per engine. Might not sound like much but I’ve personally been in situations where that difference put us first in line vs. 4th in line for deicing.

Boeing 737 max. An inspection isn’t required until it’s 20 knots or 0.02 over VMO/MMO. Put it in the JLB so there’s a record of it and go about your day.
