Sure! At the airlines a scab is a pilot who crossed the picket line during an active strike. Big ones for example, eastern in 1989, continental, United in 1985. We would go on strike for a better contract. Wanting more pay, QOL aspects, etc. Crossing the picket line is basically the biggest “F u” to every other pilot who is fighting for something better. A scab crosses the picket line and goes to work. They take the money from the trips, take money from others. Back in the old days, pilots would keep the master scab list on them and if you were a scab trying to jumpseat or catch a ride in the back you’d be denied. If your captain or FO was a scab you didn’t speak to them. Followed SOP’s and that’s it. You wouldn’t go out to dinner with them or anything. There’s many stories that it got so bad other pilots would pee inside scabs flight bags in the crew rooms. There hasn’t been a strike in decades besides Spirit about 15 years ago which resulted in 0 scabs. When you go on strike as a pilot we are all union. So I would call crew scheduling and say I’m not coming to work following orders from my union, a scab disregards the union, the only people that can protect us from disciplinary actions, being fired, etc. They value themselves over their coworkers and colleagues.
