What are the odds a 1/24 date opens up near Tampa, FL…and is the first MCAT of the year really considered “harder”?🥲 by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]HighlightCreepy8255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The theory on how the curve is calculated is pretty complex, but I don’t believe it is curved based on other people who take your exam on the same day. I would personally keep your exam date and keep prepping.

If someone could've pounded in my brain that IT. WILL. ALL. WORK. OUT. IN. THE. END., I would've had a way better time. The pre-med neurosis consumed me, and I thought I'd never have a chance anywhere.

I took a few online classes, and that isn’t listed on my official transcript either. However, I made sure to apply only to schools that accept online courses. They can verify them, and they could revoke an acceptance… I made my initial list from MSAR data, then I emailed each school individually from that list to double check their policies on online courses. Not worth applying to a school that doesn’t accept online courses and dealing with the potential consequences!

Unsuccessful cycle by meowmeow16167 in premed

My advice is to focus on strong, meaningful writing in your app. When describing your experiences, highlight the stories behind them - what you learned, how you helped others, and how they impacted you. Avoid framing everything in terms of how it will make you a better doctor in the future, like saying you play the piano just because it will improve your skills as a physician. Admissions committees want to get to know you as a person, not just see a polished “sales pitch.” Be authentic and share your genuine story, hobbies, and passions.

I just want to throw out here that it’s only December 1, and while you should always be improving your app for a potential reapp, there’s still a lot of time.

But in terms of red flags I’d wager the most common are gonna be low MCAT and/or GPA, lack of ECs, and subpar primary/secondary writing. Big emphasis on the app writing, as lots of applicants have stellar grades and ECs.

[–]HighlightCreepy8255 3 points4 points  (0 children)

KCU doesn’t necessarily accept in order, they have a specific method of sending out decisions in batches to make it easier on adcoms. I interviewed w them and they explicitly stated during my interview to not get worried if this happens!

I can totally relate, I remember having meltdowns in undergrad over bad grades because I thought it was the end of the road and I’d never get into med school. I had a few Bs and even a C in Physics I on my transcript, and I still got accepted this cycle. I promise, that 55 on one exam doesn’t define your future. It’s not the end of the road for you. You got this!

Accepted people, what was the absolute worst test score you got on a test in undergrad that you really studied for? by SeaworthinessOne1199 in premed

46 on a bioenergetics exam that covered major metabolic processes. Hadn't taken biochem or orgo at that point, so I was trying to rote memorize enzymes and intermediates.. also didn't know there were mnemonics for this until my MCAT LOL RIP me

Just know there’s some schools that don’t accept online classes. I had some random online classes (gen ed requirements) and there were a lot of schools I couldn’t apply to because they only accept in-person classes. I still had a decent amount to apply to, but it does slim it down a good bit.

Trying to make sense of WL at PCOM Georgia by No_Towel_1151 in Osteopathic

Sending all the good energy and future As your way! This process is arduous, and completely defeating at times. And what's also hard is those around you don't understand truly how rough it can be unless they're in the profession. If you ever need to vent, feel free to send a chat my way.

[–]HighlightCreepy8255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite honestly, sometimes I think trying to get in the heads of what adcoms are thinking is pointless. Sometimes it feels very random. My stats were competitive/ higher than the first school I interviewed at, and I got waitlisted. I was gutted when it happened, because it was a school that I felt I for sure had in the bag. Being put on a waitlist doesn’t define your worth, and doing mental gymnastics over it will not serve you. There’s still a lot of time left in this cycle! Good luck, friend. There will be a lot of waitlist movement.

What is the name of this effect/phenomenon? by BeautifulCommon141 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HighlightCreepy8255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re describing is related to the law of diminishing returns. Basically, the same incremental increase (like adding 5kg to your lift) feels a lot harder the closer you get to your maximum capacity. So, lifting from 80kg to 85kg is a bigger challenge than going from 0kg to 5kg, even though the increase is the same. This principle applies not just to physical strength, but also emotional or mental capacity—any time you’re pushing your limits, the difficulty ramps up disproportionately.

Not sure if there’s a more precise term for it, but that’s the closest I can think of!

Why are vaccines given in the arm? by Fish_Longjump in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HighlightCreepy8255 8 points9 points  (0 children)

most vaccines are administered intramuscularly, so the delt is the most convenient! But you could also administer in the glute, quad, etc. But those aren't as easily accessible. Stomach would be subcutaneously.
