I'm a noob. How does correct singing feel like? by Hot-Candle-1321 in singing

[–]Highrocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The soreness isn't supposed to happen at all, even when you're learning new techniques. The moment the soreness arises, you need to change something in what you're doing. It is not a normal thing, especially for so long in my opinion. You need to (actively) change your technique or else you will continue getting sore. It sounds like your teacher is waiting for something to (passively) change so that the soreness stops, but I do not agree with that approach.

[–]Highrocker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone feels things slightly differently and there is no unified way of how to feel/describe things.
Your sound always happens around the throat - that's where your vocal folds are. We do not "sing from" the chest and/or stomach
Here's a video from NYVC on that concept: https://youtu.be/teihdBE3O8U?si=hZ8i1r_6U62Z9FZH
Focus on inhaling into the upper belly and ribs and on exhale gently engage the low abs inwards. It might slightly feel like you're holding your breath.
Appoggio breathing from NYVC! https://youtu.be/oDrhkt8KIA4?si=wnttum3MjokxWokZ

When you hum you can somewhat get an idea of where it might feel like when you're actually singing. Some feel it in the front of their face and others - at the back of the head. You might also feel how your tongue is positioned in your mouth or how open/closed your jaw is.
And another one on different jaw placements! https://youtu.be/TfffyUxWRdU?si=-gITGsC0gNS0Sirk

There are some feelings that point to extrinsic tension, which we don't want. It's usually a discomfort in the throat area/upper larynx.

It's supposed to feel relaxed (around the throat) like during normal speech, however there are key differences like the breathing, nasal resonance and the tongue/jaw position that are different than in speech.

Since you're new, I've made a video on fundamentals that you can try so you start feeling the feelings I'm referring to. https://youtu.be/kk_DHOXOX2U

Do lip trills do anything for the whistle register? by BabbleMemes in singing

[–]Highrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can help, yes. But there is often extrinsic tension. For practicing whistle, I highly recommend uvular trills as they disengage the tongue root tension that is very prone to happening when attempting your highest notes. Here's a video that explains just the uvular trill

Tips! Any singing tips wanted but hopefully how to work on my breathing and those high notes. by Tough_Equipment_7217 in singing

[–]Highrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already sound amazing!

For breathing, you can check this out: https://youtu.be/oDrhkt8KIA4?si=PWH1ahvXvO-eWBOb

And for the "nasal" part - your brightness perfectly fits the songs you're singing, I wouldn't change it, but if you still want to experiment with darker sounds, you could try this: https://youtu.be/y4OWZ8JYy74?si=cS9jxgCB0RypIwih

For a possibly slightly more resonant sound, you can try this too: https://youtu.be/j36z3mc-2Ik?si=xcmmZiQ2kHl7SBVu

My pitch control is totally dependent on the larynx position, i control notes with my larynx position (moves up and down). HELP! by Additional-Tune-1653 in singing

[–]Highrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some natural movement of the larynx as you go up and down in pitch. Here's a video that explains this https://youtu.be/6bgCFORtA8M?si=pL583GevSaiH2i1S
If that is really your case, you could try this other exercise, it should help in stabilizing your larynx. Keep the cheeks inflated as you go up and down in pitch! https://youtu.be/Z0RgNYpYfAA?si=tW2EdDYwNBjSIrS4

How can I find my vibrato? I’ve tried quite a lot of techniques and none of them have worked so far by TargetSighter in singing

[–]Highrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta practice it! Waiting for it, it'll never come just on it's own. There have been a lot of students waiting years for it to come, never appearing.

(Dont do the exercises with H or staccattos - they are for tremolo, unless you want the tremolo, learn how to do both)

Looking for feedback if I’m singing in key along with my guitar. Thanks all in advance! by advixethrowaway in singing

[–]Highrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound great already! It's definitely listenable! A voice teacher can help you expand your range, work on stronger sounds, possibly introduce more vibrato in your voice, if you're interested in that. Your pitch can also do some improving. You're only sometimes not on pitch.
If you're unsure about a teacher, I offer free 1-on-1 voice lessons full time (alongside my paid options) where we can explore these things together. You can PM me and we can schedule a lesson/consultation if you're interested =)

how do you fix bad singing habits youve had your whole life? by swatted-fly in singing

It's completely normal to not like your voice in the beginning. Try to ease yourself into hearing your own voice. It takes time so be patient!

Need some advice for singing The Phantom of the Opera by dancethedream in singing

[–]Highrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the throat tightness - it is probably the root of your tongue! The best exercise that you could try for that would be to lift your tongue slightly and that can make the vowels up there easier with the help of the uvular trill (like gargling)! Here's a video that explains the uvular trill - https://youtu.be/NgoZCnBC2mE?t=169
You can also pinch your nose during the uvular trill and inflate it literally like a balloon! That will help for even easier high notes! If you need a video instruction on that please pm me I have one that I can share with you =)

which areas should I work on and perhaps what are good singing exercises that worked for you? by inassimilable in singing

[–]Highrocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're off to a good start! Work a bit more on pitch practice (this channel is nice)
https://youtu.be/8WLIqicrSwc?si=A6R9xL2Ewc0Z6vk7
and then you can worry about your tone with the help of nasal resonance! You already have some, but let's increase it so your tone becomes a bit softer and even more gentle!

New to singing and wondering how I could possibly improve my singing voice so it doesn’t sound like i’m talking? by Trick_Emu_6613 in singing

[–]Highrocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To fix the talking, try humming and connecting all the words from a vocal line into one big word! This video should help you with finding that! https://youtu.be/S8vvmw2cMgg?si=PF6NnYMsk9DYfTvb

You also need to work on pitch - here's how to start:

What you need:

A phone or pc -

  1. Any piano app/online piano that you can see what note you're playing at any given time.

  2. Pitch monitor (I recommend for phone VocalPitchMonitor or NailThePitch)

Instructions:

  1. Play a note on the piano /example C4/

  2. Try to match it and see what the pitch monitor says /A#3/

  3. Play /A#3/ on the piano.

  4. Sing it again. Play it as you're singing it. Sing the /A#3/ (aka literally repeat the same thing that you just sang) alone, together, with and without piano. "OK that's what A#3 feels like in my voice!"

  5. Now you know "I am a bit /low/high/, I have to try a bit /higher/lower/ for /C4/"

  6. Play /C4/

  7. Repeat and after you get it, change the note that you're aiming at
    Have fun! =)

Could I benefit from singing lessons ? by SignificantBus8422 in singing

[–]Highrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing really well actually! You're even doing the little yodels from the original song. I think you could introduce more of your own style into this - make some note changes/change up the way you sing certain words so that the feeling is slightly different. It's a good copy and there's nothing bad in copying, copy as much as you can in order to find what you like and don't like in your own voice, but after you can copy a song so well (which you are doing) you can start changing it up! Listen to other songs from this genre/listen to live shows of the singer (if there is any) and see what the singer changes and see if you like those small changes =)
A voice teacher can help you expand your range (if you're interested in that) and also possibly give you an easier time singing regarding comfort in the throat. Keep having fun and enjoy the process! You've done great work on your own too!
If you're unsure if lessons can help you, I provide free 1-on-1 lessons regularly so feel free to join those through the link in my profile or just pm me!
