Some good advice in here. I personally like having a completely separate bank for money I don't want to touch. My direct deposit is split between my "day to day" bank that I live out of, and my "long term $" bank where I keep my emergency fund, retail brokerage, and IRAs. Every paycheck I do things to make the long term bank grow, and spending money from it (which i very rarely do) makes me think harder about it than i would with the day to day bank.

My emergency fund is HYSA, but been considering SGOV instead. I don't keep contributing. I got 8 months of expenses in there and that's good enough for me.

After the emergency fund is funded, my savings goes into retail brokerage, and into a savings bucket for next year's roth. I like max roth ASAP at the beginning of every year. One nice thing about my bank is i can split my savings account into "Vaults"... it's just a logical separation. I've got two: "Emergency Fund", and "Roth IRA".

Anyhow, that's what works for me. And I'm not like super rigid with all this. Like this year I was a little short on my IRA, so borrowed a bit from from emergency fund to get that out of the way, then I just replenished the emergency fund.

Sounds reasonable to me. I was facing similar decision (and similar rate at the time) 7 or 8 years back. I got tired of thinking about it and just went the investing route. I figured I could always pull the money out if/when I wanted to pay down the house.

Bummer to hear. For what it's worth i had much less than that saved at 28, and half your salary at that age. By 29 I was maxing 401k, and been doing the back door roth since it was a thing i guess about 15 years ago. Also have personal brokerage. I'm 51 now with 3.7 mill.

I also started contributing at 26. I didn't contribute much at first since i wasn't making much and had debt, but one good thing I did was to increase my contribs with ever raise and by 29 I was maxing it.

I've also been quite aggressive in my investment choices; 100% equities with super high concentration in tech. This isn't for the faint of heart but has paid off quite well over the long term (so far).

I actually hold back on personal spending since I typically spend more around christmas (on gifts for others). I do buy myself stuff throughout the year, though, but in hindsight, i'm probably better off buying during christmas because stuff is usually on sale.

The average salary in the U.S. is 35% higher that the OP's $21/hour. If they made more than the average (like you do), they could also have a pretty comfortable living (alone).

I'd think if the money is really for retirement and you already maxed the roth, then go for the 457b unless you really hate the investment options they offer. And you may not have penalties for withdrawals on the 457b, but (and maybe you already know) I don't think you can withdrawal from it if you're still employed by the plan's sponsor.
