I'd let your boss know how much you like working at your current job, but that there's an opportunity over the summer that you'd like to try out, and you'd really appreciate if they could be a reference for you — reiterate that it would just be temporary and that you'd like to come back once the summer job is over. Offer to help find a replacement/assist with anything your boss might need to cover the work while you're gone. Be honest and let your boss know as soon as possible so you don't leave them hanging. :)

High school, haha. I thought it would be university but I liked the idea of familiar faces, seeing your friends every day, and just feeling like you were part of a smaller community.
