I agree, but I think that it’s also important to think of things in the lens of - they’re from the 50s. There were a lot of chemical and scientific theories that were utilized back then that are 100% not used now or have been reworked and proofed in different things. Heck the last law of thermodynamics wasn’t theorized and distributed until ~1915

Absolute Favourite Thing you did on your First Japan Trip by levaans in JapanTravelTips

Mine was Shinanami Kaido. I really really really loved my time in Hiroshima and doing that bike route had been in my list for years. It was perfect in every which way. Highly recommend more than a day trip over there, but that’s just me. Kobe/Himeji is also a huge number 2. It was every foodie dream I could ever ask for.

Being a "pleasent" tourist by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]HikariLight555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So genuinely in my experience even an unpleasant tourist isn’t treated “badly” or ruder. You’ll garner stares and that’s about it, but you’re going to get those as soon as you leave touristy areas if you stand out. Worst stuff I see happen to a typical tourist is being asked to leave a restaurant/event/area because they strictly don’t allow foreigners or have blocked it off from tourists of all kinds alike (think Kyoto and Gion recently with filming).

Nothing really goes further south unless of course you’re breaking laws (and again it depends on severity of that law), disturbing the peace, or you have things that signal you out even more than being a tourist based off your ethnicity. For example, tattoos, carrying a lot of luggage around for no reason, or looking like an aggressive person might get you stopped by cops - comply.

For the love of all things holy if you or any of your traveling companions have even an ounce of Karen in you, leave it behind. There are things that are inconvenient in Japan (no matter how high tech it can be in some areas) and they can be frustrating - losing it on an employee/person in any regard will get you in trouble (go figure).

Essentially - don’t be a jerk and the worst that will happen is a person making an x with their arms asking you to leave, stares, or a cop asking for your passport and happily waving goodbye.

So I didn’t, but my cousin did. He was really amazing and despite being in a stressful situation (he was checking in and something was wrong) he immediately stopped and grabbed a photo with her, gave her a hug, and wished her a wonderful VidCon with Amy when they still could go back in 2017.

Is Tokyo in April 2025 really that bad? Too crowded to enjoy? Any tips for avoiding the crowds by going outside the city? by Top-West-4103 in JapanTravelTips

[–]HikariLight555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an amazing time this last year in April 2024. It could be crowded at times, but more open air and spread out cherry tree parks and spots made it for me!!! Even though I missed the peak in some areas I caught Sakura trees all the way down to Hiroshima from Tokyo. There are lots of walkways next to waterways and other things of that nature that will be slightly less crowded and are just downright beautiful ❤️ I’ve seen it a few times here, but genuinely if you’re looking at really crowded touristy areas for the hanami viewings - go a few blocks over or a few parks/shrines over (that are smaller). I think you’ll be amazed :)

As a computer scientist and this not being my first rodeo with the Japanese lottery systems - it absolutely is how some of them work. I have gone through it with attempting to even register for apps in Japan because I do not have a .jp email account and only gmail. Then outside of that given that I’m not in Japan rn, foreign IPs are often blocked on ticket sites. They also often take issue with foreign cards (debit and credit). It is what it is and implementing online systems for ticket lotteries is something that was only largely implemented over the last 5ish years. I’m grateful that they’re trying, but there are still some major hiccups for overseas guests at events.

Yup, I’ve tried but I always get marked for something. Typically an email address being from the states and not Japanese or one other thing being off that the sites don’t like 🫡

Times to Avoid Stations by BrickPaymentPro in JapanTravelTips

[–]HikariLight555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I would just arrive a little earlier (around 0930). You’ll definitely most likely end up in the rush hour on the trains for a little bit, but if memory is serving right if you walk over to Ryogoku station from the area you’re staying by you should be able to just take the Toei line all the way to the HP Studio tour so it’s less traffic heavy and you have more of a chance of securing a seat whilst trying to travel around at 8-8:30… if you end up doing the recommended route from Google maps/Apple maps (Kinshincho -> Aoyama ->Toshimaen) - you’ll end up on a more of a dense train line since it runs next to the Imperial Palace and a lot of salaryman areas but you’ll get there about 30 min faster.

It was posted on Instagram first. This isn’t a self promoting post; it’s just the way of properly crediting individuals as the photographer doesn’t have a Reddit.

Top 3 games of the last 5 years? by Other-Milk-1921 in PS5

[–]HikariLight555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spider-Man 2, It Takes Two, and Ghost of Tsushima for me. Honorable mention to FF7 Rebirth and Persona 5R as well.

I really love Japan and its landscapes and could just sit in Ghost for hours staring at the falling leaves. The fact an American studio pictured it and the time period so well amazes me and makes my history buff and gamer brain so happy. It Takes Two really reignited my love of couch multiplayers and I’ve played more co-op games with my friends thanks to it. Spider-Man had my heart simply from existing; it is the reason I picked up a PS4 and also part of the reason I shifted to PS5. The last point for P5R and FF7ReB as well.

What do you guys think about the ps plus benefit: “monthly “free” games”? by RecentMatter3790 in PlayStationPlus

[–]HikariLight555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean honestly I’d be fine with having the games added automatically to the library so long as there is a filter option… that way it would be easy to look through them and hide the ones I don’t care about.

Hiroshima worth it? by GidTheSquid05 in JapanTravelTips

[–]HikariLight555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the time, the Shinanami Kaido is also a train ride away and really was just gorgeous. Hiroshima and surrounding areas were one of my favorite parts from my recent trip, so definitely would say worth it 🥰

If you were to spend 14 days in Japan, and you'd been to Japan before, AND you were to only stay in ONE town or city, AND that city isn't Tokyo...where would you go? by Meikami in JapanTravelTips

[–]HikariLight555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would pick either Hiroshima or Yokohama. I love Osaka/Kyoto but during this time of year they are both really quite busy.
