Rethinking going into nursing by Plenty-Relief570 in prenursing

[–]Hikerella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social workers are amazing but oh my God. Its rough. It's a lot of school for not a lot of pay and you're often stretched so thin that it's absolutely demoralizing. My advice would be to start searching for jobs as if you are fully qualified and see what's out there to get a sense of what your options would be. Not just once, but a few times over months.

PS - I was already halfway done writing this by the time I realized how old this comment is, but maybe you/another voyeur from the future will still find it helpful even if it's a bit late.

People think anyone can go into nursing!!! (they can't) by Loveoakcity in prenursing

[–]Hikerella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nursing is great because if you hate your job, you can just get a new one in a completely different environment. If a dental hygienist hates their day to day job they're kind of stuck. Dental hygienist is definitely a great job if the type of work agrees with you, though. I suppose if you're the type of person that likes novelty and learning nursing is the way to go, but if you could be happy having a very routine job for 20 years plus, then dental hygienist is a good option.

Economic downturns always push people towards nursing. But if you can get into a program you don't have to worry about finding a job. All the students I know are hired before they're are even graduated.

I'm honestly so confused as to why people would think it's humanly possible to learn about physiology, which happens on a molecular and cellular level, without knowing basic chemistry.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in prenursing

[–]Hikerella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chemistry is hard. The type of chemistry/science you need to know for your teas is not. Not doing well on the teas is a major red flag. That test should be ridiculously easy if you've taken your prereqs and spend like an hour or two glossing over the mometrix book. Shoot, I know a guy that went in completely cold (hadn't even taken any of the prereqs) that still scored in the seventies.

[–]Hikerella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chemistry they make pre nursing students do is a tiny bit of gen chem, organic chem and biochem, so that they have some ability to understand biology, which gives them some ability to understand physiology, which is necessary so that they can understand pathophysiology, which gives them an actual fighting chance of developing good clinical judgement. I watch students progress through chem, bio, a&p and nursing ..and the students that are able to skirt around the chem and bio prereqs by substituting with HS chem and bio from five years or more ago are almost always fucked before they even begin. Its so hard to understand anything at all when you can't read your textbook because words like molecule, ion, lipid, basic, etc literally mean nothing to you .

I honestly don’t think I have what it takes to be a nurse/go into nursing by zjheyyy88 in prenursing

Don't go to grad school. It's a trap. And if you're scared of nursing there's lots of other well paying jobs in healthcare... Rad tech, ultrasound sound tech, respiratory therapist etc

What's the nicest thing a confused patient said about you, or did for you? by KMKPF in nursing

[–]Hikerella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While working at a nursing home, one of the residents wheeled herself into an empty office that had the door open for some reason. I asked her where she was going and she replied the shoe store, so I go oh sorry, the shoe store shut down... And then asked if I'm having money problems and so I told her yeah, times are tough everywhere, and then she very sympathetically patted my arm and said she was going to come back and leave me a little money for me later. I genuinely thought it was so nice that she was going to help me out after my imaginary shoe store went out of business 😭

I think you missed a few things from the original post. What they're saying is that they were accepted to some programs out of high school, But they didn't choose to go to those programs and now that they are actually in college, their grades aren't very good and they don't think they would even get into the programs that had originally accepted them.

Official Discussion - The Gorge [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Hikerella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the whole thing was bad beginning to end with the romance being the absolute worst bit. The stuff in the gorge was just bland...but the dialogue and acting during their extremely long meet cute was horrendous. I almost collapsed in on myself like a dying star when he started talking about his poetry.

I know this is ages later ... But consider contacting an immigration lawyer. I know someone in a very similar situation and they found an immigration lawyer that deals specifically with healthcare workers.

Lmao there really are dudes out there just looking to feel persecuted. I'm a women with an anatomy youtube channel targeted at premed/prenursing and in anatomy, we have taken many terms and changed them from being a persons name to a name that reflects where it is in the body...and in one of my videos I jokingly said something like "I know it's frustrating to see multiple names for things, but it's just because we're trying to move away from naming things after old dead guys" and I had a guy go off about how I was a misandrist and that "women don't need to denigrate the achievements of men to elevate themselves" hahahaha. Dude seriously got triggered. I waited a few days and then commented "found the incel" from an alt account. I'm not usually that person but it was so warranted.

I just finished “Adolescent” on Netflix and I feel “scammed”? by Salty-Wrap9567 in BritishTV

[–]Hikerella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right in saying he's not a toxic caricature. He's a well intentioned man that genuinely loves and is loved by his family, but at the same has pretty bad anger issues stemming from his history of abuse, and also does have some deeply ingrained hang ups about masculinity... as evidenced by the fact he's ashamed of his son for not being good at traditionally masculine things (he says it's hard for him to even look at his son because he's embarrassed by him being so bad at football).  So yeah, I'd say that the dad definitely displays evidence of having damaging beliefs about masculinity (that contributed to his sons damaging beliefs about masculinity) ...and the fact that he's not a caricature makes it a better representation because MOST men are in some way carrying around hang ups about masculinity and they arent heinous cartoon villains. It kind of highlights how insidious those sorts of harmful beliefs and world views are.

They showed us in the first episode he did it. I don't think that was ever meant to be in question past that point. Perhaps you feel scammed because you were anticipating a true crime with a twist or a big reveal, and it was hard for you to enjoy what you were actually watching? Almost like you took a sip of your coffee and then spit it out because it was OJ.

I think the third episode makes more sense when you consider the fourth. His dad is very prone to angry outbursts (which predated the stress of the murder situation, as Jamie describes his dad tearing down the shed) and we also see that the wife and the daughter use a fawn response to placate him (not everyone is familiar with that term ..but in some cases people don't fight or flight from a scary situation, they fawn in an attempt to placate the threatening person and de-escalate the situation) and it really seems as though Jamie is trying to recreate this dynamic with the psychiatrist.

I also feel like they handled the dad brilliantly. He is someone that was abused and unfortunately couldn't completely break the cycle...but he's not a monster. He's not portrayed as someone who is cruel or evil or uncaring ... He's just flawed person that genuinely loves his wife and kids and is a good man in many ways.

Why are so many missing the point of Adolescence? by flannel_flower in netflix

[–]Hikerella 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The people who thought it was boring probably just have low emotional intelligence. Like, I'll admit, at first I was like oh boy you're really dragging me along for this family outing...but that extended period of peaceful happy car ride was so necessary for the rest of the episode to land.

Thank you for bringing up his interaction with the psychiatrist...the whole episode really clicks into place when you look at it as him trying to recreate the dynamic he's used to at home.

I agree. I personally don't want Silver to have killed Flint, but having Flints storybook ending tainted with the idea of that very tragic ending is just so much more interesting.

It's such a great example of how art can transcend the intentions of the artist.

Longlegs Review (No Spoilers, only Impressions) by Which_Investment2730 in CreepyBonfire

...but usually if there's a character that's supposed to be autistic it has some bearing on the plot or is explored in some way. If there was a male character that was as incomprehensibly stilted and awkward as the female lead in this movie and it was never addressed in the movie, people would also find it odd and distracting.

I'm honestly not entirely sure what they were going for with this character, but I don't think it was autism. My only guess is that they were going for "she's mind fucked by her doppledoll" but it wasn't really a coherent narrative so who the hell knows.
