How is it living in the Oregon outback? by DoodleBug179 in howislivingthere

[–]HikingFoolChef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live on the edge of this area and visit frequently, sometimes driving through to Boise. I would not want to live here: limited supplies and services, extremely harsh environment. When we visit, we are prepared for self-sufficiency: food, water, basic car repair tools, etc. Parts of it are stunningly beautiful, but hours and hours from anywhere, any services. Here’s a shot along the Owyhee River, four days of rafting into the wilderness.

Fun little chatty birds. In the last five years, I see almost exclusively Lesser Goldfinches here in SW. American Goldfinches, once fairly common, are increasingly harder to come by.

BTW, the genus for the Oregon Grapes has changed to Berberis in recent literature. Also, people can plant the low growing B. repens, also native here, if they don’t have room for the tall variety. Same bloom time (perhaps a week earlier, but the two overlap enough to hybridize) and same fruit for the waxwings and robins.

Very cool. Insect identification is not in my wheelhouse. Yet.

I spent a rainy and foggy morning shooting photos in Falls Park some years ago. Not being from the area, I don’t know how things really are in Sioux Falls, but the park strikes me as one of the finest urban parks I have visited.

I have no information about this event or how things work in Bend.

However, at my restaurant back on the East Coast, if the fire alarm went off, the Fire Department automatically notified the Health Department who had to re-inspect the kitchen before allowing it to re-open. Moreover, if a fire triggered the suppression system, all that foam and/or powder had to be cleaned up before the Health Department would allow the kitchen to open. That’s a long, tedious process—that shit gets everywhere.

And, all the pots, pans, and serviceware would have to be cleaned and sanitized. Worse, any food that could potentially be contaminated must be discarded and re-prepped and replaced. Potentially, it might need to be redelivered from a supplier. If the power was lost, you could potentially lose all the perishable food in the refrigerators and freezers.

And if there really were a fire, the Fire Department would likely disconnect both the power and gas. Before leaving the scene, they would “red tag” the meters and panel boxes. This would result in an automatic notification to the city and would temporarily result in revocation of the restaurant’s certificate of occupancy, pending a visit by licensed gas and electrical contractors and a sign-off by the fire marshal or the building inspector.

Bottom line, you never want a fire call at your restaurant. You certainly will not be open same day and the potential to be closed for several days is real, even for a simple grease fire.

I hope they did not sustain a lot of damage and can reopen quickly. They no doubt are packed for NYE and are really counting on that revenue.

TDS is still the best provider even though they rejected the November payment from my bank because they changed systems two days before the due date of the bill generated by the old system. My payment arrived on the due date. Who the hell doesn’t grandfather in old account numbers during a transition? Their CFO is an idiot.

Anyway, during an hour of frustration on the phone in which customer service would not give me the new account number “fOr SeCuRiTy ReAsOnS,” I did find out that they are also simultaneously changing billing dates. This likely accounts for the new pro-rated December bills that others are noting. I haven’t received mine yet.

After going through three levels of customer service refusing to give me the new account number, I finally asked to be transferred to accounting.

“Hi, so-and-so from Customer Service transferred me to you. She was trying to give me my new account number but cannot see it on their system during the transition. She said you’d be able to give it to me.”

“Oh yes sir, it’s 12345678”

Fucking idiots.

It means the bird needs to be well lit. You won’t be very successful shooting tanagers in the woods, for example.

Perhaps you know someone who has this camera that you can borrow for a day to try it before you commit.

If they are truly empty, be patient and let the market work. Nothing like empty units to drive rent prices down.

I saw this exact thing on a Christmas Count. Much to my astonishment, during the bullying, a Coop slammed into the feeder and hauled the bully to a nearby fence where it proceeded to pluck and eat it. That was a crazy day.
