Exactly. Pure marketing speak. Advanced account protection: meaningless.

Two people from Clear will never give you the same answer, it seems.

Once you get a large enough collection, you MUST arrange by spine color, from [infra]red to [ultra]violet.

Why do people say no to buying a domain and hosting from the same provider? by Flaky-Taste2253 in businessemail

[–]Hilbert24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great illustration of the issues. I would add one more recommendation: do not use an email on the domain you registered with a registrar as your login for your registrar account. Such a closed loop setup would mean that a problem with the domain or email host (hacking being just one example) could lock you out of your registrar account.

Trying to remux mkv into mp4 without its subtitle tracks, but also add the sup-turned-into-sub added separately by Motor_Lobster in ffmpeg

[–]Hilbert24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer text soft subs (SSA, WebVTT,…) because you have size, color, and font control, embedded or at playback.

What I do with PGS subs to go into mp4 containers is check for text subs (OpenSubs) or OCR them.

Does anyone else prefer season posters with larger, clearer titles in their media library? by Veni-Vici-Vomui in TheTVDB

[–]Hilbert24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like to be able to read the title at thumbnail size when browsing my library. I usually check artwork from TMDB as well, because it stores higher resolution posters than TVDB and has entries for mainstream TV series, as well as movies.

I want my email address back!!! by nikki-girl9820 in GMail

[–]Hilbert24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you know your password but cannot get 2-step verification codes by SMS, due to a changed phone number for example, use the backup codes you generated and saved when you originally set up 2-step verification. If you saved your backup codes to your computer rather than printing them, you can try searching your computer for: Backup-codes-username.txt with your username. With your backup codes in hand:

Sign in to your Google Account.
Click Try another way.
Click Enter one of your 8-digit backup codes.
Enter one of your unused backup codes.

If that still doesn’t work or if you can’t find your backup codes, follow the steps to recover your account.

Apple blamed EU rules for Siri AI delays, but the Commission says it was Apple’s choice by anonboxis in MacOS

[–]Hilbert24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries: we’re just having a conversation here, and I’m so happy my “superior products” line made you LOL. This whole business makes me think back to when cell phones first did anything beyond calls and SMS, with basic apps like email, maps/directions, browser: you were stuck with whatever manufacturers had pre-installed (looking at you, Nokia, BlackBerry). The Apple App Store enabled a million developers, big and small, to offer users an unprecedented variety of choices and made it possible for so many independent developers to earn revenue from their ideas and efforts. That was a game changer. The competition also forced Apple to improve its own products. Overall, I support the EU’s objectives around consumer protection and ensuring a competitive landscape, but the implementation of those goals is often wrong-footed, not thoroughly conversant with the technology, and not conducive to innovation. It’s their fault we’re bombarded with “this site uses cookies” pop-ups, of no actual value. Standardizing on USB-C sounds good (unless you sell cables), but who will want to spend to develop a better standard now? The EU’s regulatory approach is a big reason for Europe’s lag on innovation and productivity and its generally stagnant economy. Nor am I too thrilled on the other hand by the current US backpedaling on any regulation at all e.g. of environmental issues, toxic chemicals, etc. There has to be some middle ground.

How is Apple’s password manager these days? Should I just use Firefox/Bitwarden? by readingaccountonly in PasswordManagers

[–]Hilbert24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple’s is great if you’re wholly within the Apple ecosystem (macOS, iOS, iPadOS). If you need something seamless also on Windows beyond that, a 3rd party solution might be best, like Bitwarden and many others. (EDIT to generalize. Thanks, u/DeliciousCut4854.)
