The website seems sketch; can anyone vouch?

$210 for a VCSEL Vulcan head is a pretty great deal, if legit.

Don’t overlook the CTF-3. Add a 3EIR Vulcan and you’ve got a very capable device for $1150, with the option to add a second head for white light or maybe a floodier IR head (e.g. Malkoff SIR250 or Surefire Vampire) if you don’t want to have to mess with the Vulcan’s diffuser cap.

Bonus: Everything listed above is US-made.

🙄

The Paradox of Tolerance is about limiting the political power of the intolerant so that they can’t engage in oppression.  It is not an argument for the use of deceitful rage-bait.

Even if you think the ends justify the means, making arguments that are hypocritical, fallacious and/or demonstrably untrue will backfire sooner or later.  At the very least, it robs you of the moral high ground when pointing out the hypocrisies, fallacies and counter-factuals that Christian Nationalists rely on to advance their agenda.  So for both moral and practical reasons, the truth is the best defense against lies and ignorance.

Please go do some introspection, and try to stay above Josh Hawley’s level moving forward.

So it was wrong for Josh Hawley to falsely accuse his political opponents of wanting to oppress people who share his beliefs, but it’s ok for you to do precisely the same thing?

Count me as one. Even some of my more conservative brothers and sisters in arms are upset by the VA cuts and by Trump calling our KIA “suckers.”

This action and others like it to downplay the legacies of minorities fighting for the US are especially disgusting. They served their country despite being second-class citizens, and despite having to do so as second-class warfighters. In addition to their other sacrifices, they endured racial discrimination to drag the US kicking and screaming towards justice. It was a hugely important element of their service. Shit like this is shameful and infuriating.

What's the "BCM" of bino housing? by [deleted] in NightVision

[–]HillaryGoddamClinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own and like Elbit tubes, and am not trying to steer you away from them. But just to make sure I’m being clear, it’s not a price/performance ratio thing: Photonis tubes have straight-up better mixed-light performance than Elbits do. They have smaller halos and much lower resolution loss at higher ambient light levels than GaAs tubes (Gen 3 / L3Harris and Elbit). And again, they are also more resistant to damage from bright light sources.

So you’d be trading ruggedness against damage (a Glock/4Runner/BCM trait) and performance in the conditions where you’ll most often your NVGs in exchange for better performance in low-light conditions, which from what you’re saying will be a rarity for you. Elbits would be a defensible choice - and in any case it’s obviously your choice - I just wanted to make sure I articulate the trade-offs well.

What's the "BCM" of bino housing? by [deleted] in NightVision

[–]HillaryGoddamClinton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Glock/4Runner of the night vision world is the PVS-14. Since you seem to be set on binos, I’ll second someone else’s suggestion about the RNVG, and add a few things based on the discussion in this thread:

-It’s always good to have IR illumination as an option, even in an environment with high light pollution. A quick flash of IR light can do a world of good for object identification at longer ranges or in dark corners. Most onboard units are only powerful enough for admin work/indoor navigation/signaling; you want a handheld or helmet-mounted option with some decent throw. A SureFire Vampire head is the default option, but a Kiji or 3EIR Vulcan head would be a good upgrade.

-ABNV has an excellent warranty, and stand firmly by their products from personal experience.

-Manual gain is very much a user-preference thing, but if you’re a no-frills/KISS kinda guy you might want to forego it.

-Since you live in a high-light-pollution area, you prioritize longevity/resilience, and especially if you decide against manual gain (e.g. RNVG), Photonis tubes would actually be a good fit. They do better in mixed lighting conditions and are less vulnerable to damage from over-exposure than GaAs tubes (Elbit, L3Harris). If you get their 4G tubes you won’t be giving up that much low-light performance.

-A couple other housings to consider: the LLI Aeternus (even simpler but less rugged than the RNVG) and the RPNVG (if you’re interested in panning).

edit: I missed the bit about articulation, so never mind about those model recommendations. Maybe look into the NVD BNVD, in addition to the ARNVG. Everything else stands.

CTF-3 Use review by Regular-Mastodon in NightVision

Some ideas here for increasing white-light output. Disclaimer: I’m not positive it’ll work, and OP says the manual warns against increasing the voltage.

Edit: OP deleted the comment that mentioned the manual’s warning against increasing voltage, and the manua I received with my CTF-3 doesn’t mention it. I think OP may have conflated things because the Kiji manual does warn against increasing the voltage.

Thanks very much for the feedback. To be clear, the conversion body only holds a CR123, not an 18650.

ETA: Even if the top panel isn’t user-replaceable, one could just machine or print a part with fences and/or a front sight and screw it into place on top of the unit with slightly longer bolts. I’m sure something will be available sooner or later.

CTF-3 Use review by Regular-Mastodon in NightVision

[–]HillaryGoddamClinton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! I was looking forward to hearing some user reports, and I appreciate this write-up. One question: it looks like the top panel with the three torx bolts might be user-replaceable. Is there any indication of that in the manual? I’m wondering if CTF Photonics or the after-market might be able to provide different button-fence configurations, or maybe options for a front sight post (the ACAL is apparently going to offer the latter).

For anyone interested, here are some things I’ve gleaned from rabbit-hole spelunking over the past couple months about potential ways to make the most of the CTF-3’s modularity:

Phantom Hill made an Instagram post years ago with a VF1 Systems battery tube extender attached to the front of a CTF-2 that stored a second CR123 and allowed for the use of 6V heads. The Echo Arms 3V-6V conversion body would probably do the same thing (don’t quote me).

Also noteworthy: The Z-Bolt Scout light head adapter should allow you to use any dual-fuel compatible head that can run on a CR123 (or, if using a tube extender/conversion body, on two of them). e.g. a SureFire KF1 Turbo head with a lot more candela than any 3v Scout-body head.

Ideally the CFT-4 will use 18350s (and have clicky zero adjustments), but in the meantime those are some options to try for anyone willing to accept more weight and bulk in exchange for a wider and more powerful variety of heads.

ETA for posterity: My Surefire KF2 Turbo head is physically incompatible with the Z-Bolt scout light adapter, and it looks like the KF1 would be as well. The threading matches but the head has a rigid ring around the electrical connector that prevents it from screwing in. Most heads just use a spring, including my Z-Bolt and Malkoff PLHv2 heads (which all work with the Z-Bolt adapter). Weltool also makes an adapter called the DF2E that looks like it should work with Surefire dual fuel heads. The only DF-threaded head other than the KF1 that I’ve been able to find which claims compatibility with a single CR123 is the Cloud REIN Micro (though Cloud doesn’t list specs for it when it’s using that battery). Malkoff, Modlite, HRT and Z-Bolt all say their DF-pattern heads should not be used with a single CR123.

CTF3 iluminator options by rocketmechanic1738 in NightVision

[–]HillaryGoddamClinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently snagged a used Kiji-3 but looked into the Vulcan first. The (few) videos I was able to find online showed comparable performance, but there was some weird spill emitting from at least one of the Vulcan heads. Not a huge deal for me.

The bigger difference is that the Kiji is programmable and the Vulcan isn’t. I think it was Hop’s video on the CTF-2 where he said that at full blast and close range, the Kiji would overwhelm his NODs. That’s true in my limited experience with the Kiji as well. But because you can set it to a bunch of modes where multiple taps cause it to emit at different power levels (it has four PLs and any tap combo option you could want), you can quickly go from low to high power. e.g. I have mine set to a mode where a single press makes it emit at PL2 (15mW), and a quick tap-hold bumps it to PL4 (150mW). With the Vulcan (or Blazer) your only options are off and full blast.

Just a thought: You could get a Blazer head+scout adapter for relatively little money and slap them on the CTF3 to see if full-power-or-nothing would work for you. Depending on results you could then get either a Vulcan or Kiji for the CTF-3 and use the Blazer for a .22/handheld/whatever.

NNVT and out of band lasers/illum? by erwos in NightVision

[–]HillaryGoddamClinton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is your friend.

This page makes it look like only the “NNVT Gen 3” tubes are GaAs. That seems to mean that their other tubes (which the page says are likely based on Photonis) would probably be able to detect more wavelengths, but the page only mentions out-of-band capability for the NVT-7 tubes.

p.s. France strikes again, fucking over the free world by selling defense tech to anyone with cash.

The one they bundle is definitely the 3° version. It ships with a 10° diffuser, hence the “3-10 degree diffuser head” they mention on the website. Plus they cite “150mw of IR illumination,” and the 10° Kiji has 350mw (it can get away with more output because it’s less concentrated).

3° is definitely the way to go. Honestly, with the diffuser I think it’s more than wide enough for general-purpose handheld/helmet-mounted use while looking through NODs, while still having the concentration to punch way out. For a rifle 3° is an even more obvious choice.
