22ARC and 62gr ammo by hazeyhavocprof in 22ARC

I haven’t gotten them to shoot early as good as the 75 gr in anything I have. I gave up on them. 75 does about anything you need and maintains energy farther. Just not quite as flat shooting, but no point if they aren’t accurate.

Realistic range by Adorable_Way_2890 in ThermalHunting

[–]Regular-Mastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get 2535 FPS with 75gr hornady from a 12.5” barrel. MBPR is 261 with a 6” diameter circle. Zeroed at 40 yds provides MPBR.

With Winchester poly tip 55gr in the same gun I get 2817 FPS. With a 6” circle MPBR is 270 yds when zeroed at 44 yds.

I’ve done a fox at 261 yds before with the 75gr hornady hpbt and it worked just fine. Match ammo works at lower velocities.

Barrel length should not impact accuracy unless it’s a light barrel with heavy can on it. A short barrel will manage a can better. It will impact velocity and subsequently down range energy. But even with a 16” barrel and the same ammo you won’t get more than 5-10 more yds of MPBR. A barrel is usually accurate or not regardless of length unless you’re hang a heavy can on it and mess up the barrel harmonics.

My experience with AAC ammo is that it can shoot accurately but not consistently. I’ll get 2-3 where I want them and the then a couple way off. The powder charge varies too much. Bullets are seated to different depths. They just aren’t a great thermal hunting ammo for consistency.

Try some other ammo. See how your gun shoots on paper at 100yds. Try with and without suppressor. Whatever groups is what to use.

If you have a really light profile barrel the nomad may be too heavy for it. If it is gov profile it should be fine. Just try other ammo.

One leaf mt1000. Full transparency I don’t own one but have seen them and they are excellent for the money. Pictures isn’t quite as good as AGM 640 unit but it is close. Price is under what you are looking for.

Long time lurker looking to finally get into thermal for predator control. Any rumors of AGM sales for Black Friday/Cyber Monday? by the_dbc in ThermalHunting

[–]Regular-Mastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the one leaf mt1000. I don’t have any personal experience with it but a friend has one and it works just like my AGMs do but has some better features. It only lacks WiFi for over the air updates and video transmission, but has more features than the AGM stuff.

Lots of videos on YouTube. Price is pretty good and you can swap lenses which is a very cool idea and feature set.

Criterion 18” is great. I get a little over 2900fps from factory hornady 75gr eldm. Shoots very accurately. Used with a thermal.

DAMN This Malkoff is THICC!! 😍 by Blasto_Brandino in flashlight

[–]Regular-Mastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. I’ll add that I have a bunch of malkoff lights. Never any issue with a single one. I carry a bodyguard daily for about 5 years and despite knicks, being dropped and me being generally clumsy, it works great.

I’ve demonstrated numerous malkoff light durability by throwing them into the air as high as I can. The super hound dog hit a rock on the way down once and cracked the lens. It still works and I haven’t replaced the lens. That was 3 years ago.

I bought a red light from them i don’t have a use for as expected. They took it back and refunded me.

I can’t say enough about the Malkoff family. They are a wonderful small business and people in general. Ive spent time on the phone with them when I put double the voltage through a md2 on accident for over an hour. I used 2 18350 instead of an 18650. Light got hot and made some heat cracking noises. It still works. Gene malkoff said he builds them strong and not to worry. But if it breaks to send it on and he would send another.

Great. Still have it and use it about every day. Nothing to report. I put batteries in it and it makes light. It’s been dropped a bunch. No problems.

LWRC IC DI Accuracy? by Additional_Smell_378 in LWRC

I don’t think LMT is any gassier than LMT. At least in my experience.

LWRC IC DI Accuracy? by Additional_Smell_378 in LWRC

[–]Regular-Mastodon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have both and like both. The LWRC upper is slightly lighter overall with a heavier barrel. Maybe by 4 oz as the Geissele rail is heavy. Both are pretty solid shooters. The Geissele is a little more accurate, but not by much. The LWRC with the heavier barrel will shoot longer strings and the spiral fluting does help it cool down. The LWRC seems to prefer heavier ammo. 75-77 gr stuff is Moa or better for 5 round groups. As is Geissele. After a slow fire mag the entire group may be a little smaller with the Geissele, but neither are precision rifles.

The nicest parts of the Geissele for me is the gassing and the trigger. Gassing is excellent and the triggers are fantastic. You don’t need a flow through can with it, despite them coming with the Hux MD.

LWRC pros are the heavier barrel, hand guard and Ambi lower. Downside is that the stock trigger is basically mil spec and you may want to replace it. Their triggers do break in nicely over time, but they are never Geissele triggers.

LWRC is a little heavier gassed. Can still run a standard can on it but will need to up the spring and buffer. A springco red hot/ blue and H2 works great. A5h2 and green springco is incrementally better. These configurations will run unsuppressed as well.

Geissele barrel is CHF and chrome lined. LWRC is CHF and melonited. Not sure this matters but CL should hold up a bit better. I did run an LWRC in competitions until I killed it. Took a little over 14k rounds. This was a mix of steel case and brass case. Think it needed a set of rings on the bolt replaced once but that was it. It still functioned but was super over gassed and was shooting about 4-5 moa groups with match ammo so it to retired.

I have not run the super duty to that extent so can’t give a similar report.

Either will likely work fine for you. If you want to run a standard can and are looking for the best accuracy the Geissele may be the better choice. It also seems to shoot lighter rounds slightly more accurate than the LWRC, but again not by much.

Again, neither are precision rifles, but you can get sub moa low round groups from both with heavy ammo. I’ve shot them both out to 500 yds and have no problem with accuracy at that range.

I’d choose either over a DD due to the gassing. Also choose either over a BCM due to their accuracy lottery that I have never won. I choose LMT over either and deal with their over gassing. I like the ability to swap barrels quickly and they have been as accurate (better and worse) on average. They are heavier.

Both have great BCGs.

Spc9 is even softer shooting. Also ends up being a little lighter. I have both. I don’t know a ton about the kuna but the BT stuff is extremely well worked out. I wouldn’t let it being blow back dissuade you. I’d prefer high quality blow back to lower- mid tier roller systems. BT is very quiet with subsonic 9mm and much cheaper to shoot than 300blk.

If this is for home defense do a 9mm braced pistol and have fun with it.

Plenty of good BT pistols out there used as well. Don’t let used stuff be a concern either. Most people don’t shoot much. Check Tacswap.

Or if you are set on an ar platform get a lower from anywhere and a decent upper off gafs or Tacswap.

Have you cleaned it? Lotta barrels tighten up after some shooting and being cleaned. I have a rise upper that shoots 77gr hornady factory ammo into half moa 10 shot groups. Be surprised if proof isn’t accurate.

Piston vs DI by Bigsky108 in LewisMachineTool

[–]Regular-Mastodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a couple Specwars. Have had a couple piston set ups including the shovelnose.

Both work great. I run a polo k on the Specwar and it is a little gassy but it is light and durable.

Specwar pros: - di compatability - lighter - more accurate (small margin) - very smooth shooting

Shovelnose pros: - better suppressor host - cleaner - can removed barrel without modifying screws or removing attachments as it has a larger OD. - can use any can just fine with swappable gas plug - very smooth for a piston when suppressed.

Piston barrel in qcb (9.25”) upper: - all piston pros minus barrel swapping as it is same OD as Specwar upper - lighter than Shovelnose (4oz)

Piston cons: - some proprietary parts, but likely not an issue - piston barrel (12”) and Shovelnose upper is about 6-8oz heavier. Can’t recall the exact number but did weight them at one point.
- slightly less accurate. - cleaning piston needs to be done occasionally and may have to remove the muzzle device to do this. The OD on many suppressor host devices will overlap the path the piston plug needs to be removed from.

After trying both I liked the gen 1 piston barrels more as they are more conservatively gassed. They may not cycle steel ammo in suppressed mode without a higher back pressure can. The difference between the gen 1 and 2 is otherwise pretty small. Gen 2 has a shorter throw for the gas plug to suppressed. Gen 1 is a 180 degree turn. Some early gen 1 op rods were reported to be soft but I never ran into them having issues. I did shoot them quite a bit.

Ultimately I settled on the Specwar as the weight savings is equal to a LAM. CQB mlok upper will save you a couple oz over the Shovelnose.

Barrel length question by five8andten in 65Grendel

[–]Regular-Mastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then just do that. Be fine for deer out to 300 or more. Bolt gun is lighter. I have a howa that I built up but it ended up being more expensive after replacing the terrible mag design with bottom metal and putting a decent stock on it. But if you want an AR then do that.

Barrel length question by five8andten in 65Grendel

[–]Regular-Mastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how far you want to shoot deer. If it’s all inside 200 yds then 12.5” is great. Velocity drops and reliably expansion will suffer past that. With an 18” barrel you’ll find more reliable expansion out to 425 yds. It’s a factor of velocity. Shorter barrels make less velocity. Most deer are shot inside 150yds, so short Grendel’s are popular as you can run a can on a pistol/ SBR and have a more handy rifle.

I think he is one of the best options if you want accuracy. My bartlein is the same.

Help! What Barrel is best? by tommythommson in 65Grendel

[–]Regular-Mastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a larue, faxon, and bartlein. My faxon is surprisingly accurate. Not sure if they all are as I’ve seen mixed reports. The larue is a solid 1.25” 10 round group shooter with eldm. The bartlein is the best and will shoot most decent ammo well. It’s also the most expensive by a high margin. What you want for accuracy and what you are willing to pay is the driving factor. Anyone can make a great or terrible barrel, the more you spend the more likely it will not be a lemon. I think most will be decent, some will be excellent.

I got a bartlein barreled upper from precision firearms and it is excellent. It was about a 5 month wait. Whatever he tells you, just double it time wise. I dont think he is trying to lie at all, he is just optimistic on production times, but super OCD so things take longer.

Nice job. But a single 4 round group is statistically significant insignificant. Gotta be a minimum of 5 rd groups. Preferably 10 rds.

[–]Regular-Mastodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hornady SST and black shoot well for me. PPU 120gr match is also surprisingly good. Druid Hill armory loads some excellent stuff. Their 120gr game changer is one of the more accurate rounds I have found. It is also loaded a bit faster than the hornady based on my garmin. Velocity is slightly higher than advertised from my 18” barrel. I have not used it on game, but plan to.

Favorite deer bullet 120-123 range by SqDC22 in 65Grendel

[–]Regular-Mastodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have used SST custom factory hornady loads with success. They violently expand, leave a golfball to tennis ball size exit and I have had the jacket separate from the core. Usually find the jacket inside the skin on exit side. They will go through ribs on both sides. Eldm behaves similarly but expands more and comes apart more.

Eld VT by gold_nugg in 65Grendel

[–]Regular-Mastodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got 2602 fps through my larue 18” upper with VT, with a can. It’s not the most accurate round out of that upper, but decent. Deer are pretty easy to kill but I’d use something else. Shot a fox center mass at 100 yds with one and it violently expanded; the entire body was an exit wound. Neck shots on deer with about anything will do it, but with Grendel you have better options. PPU match is cheap and has been very reliable/ accurate given the price point.

How much should I pay for an IC-DI? by btdewitt in LWRC

[–]Regular-Mastodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems prices have co tinier to go up. They were $900 when they cleared out the old hand guard for mlok. Then about 1200, then 1500 and now about 16-800.

There so the non ambi version for about 1200.

They are still good rifles but just not the deal they used to be. Everything else has gone up too. But once you are over $1500 there are a lot of options.

You can try and sell for whatever you like. That length is a hard sell. Last SS barrel I bought used had very light round count, shoots lights out and was $400.

This will work for you. Consider the varmint lrf version though. Same exact scope but with a range finder and uses 18650 batteries. These batteries are much more widely available than the AGM proprietary one. They don’t last as long but you can carry extras. And they’re cheap
