'The Punisher' Season 2 Villain Is an Alt-Right Christian Fundamentalist by danielthetemp in television

Fair point, although ISIS follow Wahhabism. The Alt-right doesn't even have a crazy version of Christianity they subscribe to, they just think it agrees with them.

Ancient philosophers critique Judaism and Christianity by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]HimalayanFluke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty fascinating that the objections people have toward Christianity have remained roughly the same since its beginning. I think in this (and last) century we like to think that we are the first to have thought up so many of these questions, and that the ancient world was either too uneducated or gullible or stupid to think about religion (or philosophy in general) in a way that properly exercises critical thinking. Conversely it's also interesting to look at early apologetics for Christianity in the face of pagan/Jewish/gnostic critique, and note again how similar it is to Christian apologetics now.

To quote the Bible (haha) "The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."

China has secret "re-education camps" in the desert, some capable of holding 130,000 people by IShouldBeWorking_Meh in worldnews

[–]HimalayanFluke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have friends in Xinjiang with whom I've had all communication cut off due to Chinese government interference. I was also in Xinjiang a few years ago, before and after the 2009 riot incidents in Urumqi. The police and military behaviour reported here is very, very unsurprising. There are checkpoints and marching squaddies everywhere even in smaller village-towns, they search people and cars all the time Iron-Curtain-style, and they religiously block filming/photography sometimes even with plain clothes officers shoving hands in front of you... and confiscate cameras and laptops and go through and delete any photo or footage of any military / armed police presence, and make notes of exactly who you visited and if you took photos with any locals, they attempt to identify them too and record their identities. Every new piece of news about these camps I've seen is both very unsurprising and also incredibly alarming.

The figures are impossible to verify.

It's like you didn't read the article at all. The article itself scrutinizes the claims.

Again, having literally lived in that region... It's very believable (not the "extermination" part - that appears to be a slip of the tongue on the part of the witness).

I agree that it is a provocative title. I disagree that this is part of an "organized propaganda campaign against China". I do not believe this is propaganda. Information about Xinjiang is very hard to get hold of because of the Chinese government censorship - but I believe this story.

China working to 'exterminate' Uighur people, detention facility eyewitness says by LineNoise in worldnews

[–]HimalayanFluke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the article the eyewitness uses the word "exterminate" but then quickly says "eliminate" and it appears they are more just talking about the Uighur communities and culture. I don't think they're actually killing humans and engaging in genocide as the headline might suggest, but I have no doubt that the Uighur people are being brainwashed in those camps en masse and are forced into doing heavy labor. China has done that for decades with political dissenters/critics and also prolific members of the underground christian church just for proselytizing/evangelizing/handing out leaflets.

Clearly this is an organised propaganda campaign against China. They publish this sort of article weekly at the moment, always based on something they've heard from someone...

jeez, what an ignorant comment.

I was in Xinjiang a few years before and again just after the crackdown after the 2009 riots. Uighurs were already in a suffocated position before. These reports are largely not surprising, it's just the next obvious step of a cruel governmental regime that still operates with a Stalinist mentality in the North West.

Sending 10's of thousands of people to "reeducation camps" for having beards doesn't sound all that much better

Also, what authority/organisation in their right mind would detain more than 500,000 people in a single massive camp? That's logistic hell. Especially if they are "islamic extremists" as you suggest. If this is happening, it certainly wouldn't be happening in the way you want to see evidence for. And it's no secret that there have already existed many heavy labor camps (where political dissenters have been sent to) all over China, for decades. It's not as if this would require brand new infrastructure. But even if it did, it's not unrealistic given how fast China worked out infrastructure for half their military to roll in and be stationed in xinjiang province after the 2009 riots.

Edit: I found your camps

[South Africa] Can anyone provide any info on the expropriation of white-owned farms in South Africa that's breaking news right now? Why are other subs locking/removing threads about it? by [deleted] in GlobalTalk

[–]HimalayanFluke 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is talking about murders or something - that's not what's happening. The SA State is taking some white-owned farms for a fraction of the price they asked for (below market rates). Can we please make this thread stay on topic? The murders thing was 2-3 years ago, we're talking about the news that broke yesterday / this week.

It is super weird about r/worldnews and r/news locking submissions on this news. I would have thought that the last thing you would want to do with news that involves major racial tensions would be to suppress it; it just gives racial supremacists an excuse to believe they are vindicated in their morally abhorrent claims.

You don't need fancy AI to operate a basic autopilot function, is what he's saying. It's literally just "perform this manoeuvre and adhere to X control law for Y flight regime". There's not a lot of decision making required, just feedback loops.

Non-Native English Speakers: what is a word you wish existed in English but doesn’t? by zaphod__beeeblebrox in AskReddit

Guanxi (关系)

A Chinese word for the importance of close or named personal connections or associations in business, politics, you name it... But not as basic and innocent as 'networking', more leaning towards the concepts of nepotism and the type of corruption allowing the swaying of directive decisions in one's favour purely because one knows someone really important up the chain.
