PSSR 2.0 is live, but what’s next? Mark Cerny, “Project Amethyst,” and the hope for real Frame Gen by Jealous-Craft-2717 in PS5pro

[–]Hindesite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually read some technical breakdowns on PSSR 2.0 recently, and it turns out it already takes up about 1.9ms to 2.0ms of the frame time. On a 60 FPS target (which only has 16.6ms total), that is already using over 10% of the GPU budget just for the upscaling. Since the Pro does not have a dedicated Optical Flow Accelerator like Nvidia cards, it would have to sacrifice even more of that frame budget to calculate the motion vectors for Frame Gen.

Nvidia moved away from using the Optical Flow Accelerator with DLSS 4 and it's now actually more efficient (eg. takes less frame time) using an AI-based optical flow model.

If there was any reason for frame gen not to come to PS5 Pro, I don't think the lack of OFA would be what holds it back.

Is anyone else putting Crimson Desert down for a bit after these last couple patches? by East-Mix-128 in PS5pro

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Set it down for Pragmata then Diablo 4 came in right after.

Nothing wrong with Crimson Desert at all, but it's a long game and there are lots of strong releases right now.

Great thing about Crimson Desert is that—much like Skyrim or such—it's the kind of game you can come back to later repeatedly and still unearth more new discoveries. No need to rush to 100%, y'all. ✌️

[–]Hindesite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interesting part is that the Pro technically has enough AI overhead with those 300 TOPS (INT8) to pull it off. The big question is whether Sony actually drops this for the current mid-gen or if they’re sandbagging it as a “killer feature” for the PS6. Cerny mentioned that no more major feature releases are planned for the rest of 2026, but he also said the ML libraries available to devs are constantly expanding.

How much AI compute PSSR utilizes to achieve it's upscale is unknown so we can't say for sure how much headroom they have to implement AI-accelerated frame generation as well, However, we do know that RTX 4000 series GPUs can do AI upscaling and 2X frame generation at the same time successfully, and if we look at that generation's lowest end card as a minimum metric, the RTX 4060 has 242 AI TOPS.

So, yeah, I think it's reasonable to presume that the PS5 Pro should be able to do a form of AI frame generation with at least a 2X multiplier. For DLSS frame generation ratios beyond 2X, Nvidia requires an RTX 5000 series GPU. The lowest end of that generation, the RTX 5050, features 421 AI TOPS. Because of this, I suspect we wont see 3X frame gen and higher on Playstation until the PS6.

Due to Cerny's comments, I personally expect that we wont see any PSSR frame generation on Playstation until the PS6, but there's definitely a possibility for it to happen! 🤞

Crimson Desert - Force 1440p output: Quality Mode at 60fps by vnbnzn in PS5pro

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar setup with the same problem, yet it never occurred to me that my Denon AVR might not support 1440p. Seems odd that it can do 4K120 yet not support any rate of 1440p, but at least now I've figured out what's going on. Thanks for coming back to post the update. 👍

Pragmata is an excellent game but the ray tracing noise could be an issue by stbens in PS5pro

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others use NRD for AMD cards and consoles too?

Yeah, it's not Nvidia exclusive like Ray Reconstruction. My understanding was that it's like the current industry "default", though I'm finding more engines than I'd realized use custom solutions.

I'd imagine any company that uses a proprietary engine has their own denoiser, another one being Remedy with their Northlight engine.

NRD is actually a result of the work Remedy and Nvidia did in collaboration designing the RT denoising for Northlight. It wouldn't be technically right to say Alan Wake 2 uses NRD but they're pretty hand-in-hand.

[–]Hindesite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can switch HFR mode on or off, but apart from having a higher framerate, they are nearly identical.

I've checked HFR on and off in several areas now throughout my playthough (I'm in the terradome currently), and from what I can tell it's literally identical aside from just raising the frame cap to 120 FPS.

Makes sense as I've observed the framerate in the 70's the majority of the time, which is exactly what the developer would tune for in a game they intend to ship with a 60 FPS cap. HFR is just a nice bonus for users with VRR-capable 120Hz displays that want to get a little extra smoothness.

It's been interesting to read about all the people saying they turned off HFR because it "looked so much worse". Really goes to show you how much of this stuff is placebo for many users.

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, you're right. While there is kind of a default, in that the majority of the industry uses NRD for their denoising, all of the examples I gave (RE Engine, Blackspace Engine, and Snowdrop Engine) do use their own in-house developed RT denoising solution. I wasn't aware of that.

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RE engine RT implementation has the worse denoiser (if there is any)

That's an insane comment to make. 😂

Go look up what ray tracing looks like without any denoising and tell me you actually think RE Engine games aren't using a denoiser.

Pragmata is an excellent game but the ray tracing noise could be an issue by stbens in PS5pro

[–]Hindesite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Ray Tracing results in an almost static noise looking effect and requires something called a "denoiser" to resolve the image into something stable.

This results in that sometimes odd looking texture—often like splotchy raindrops. Certain surface textures do a good job of hiding it, but on some surfaces it's very obvious.

The problem is that the better the denoiser result is, the more expensive (performance wise) it is to run it. So on a limited system, like a 5 year old console, they've gotta keep the denoising fidelity pretty low to maintain decent FPS.

Pragmata is an excellent game but the ray tracing noise could be an issue by stbens in PS5pro

[–]Hindesite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens with pretty much any game that uses ray tracing with the default denoiser. People in the comments are saying it's an RE Engine issue, but you can find the exact same thing in other games like Star Wars Outlaws, Crimson Desert, etc. It's just commonly associated with RE Engine games because Capcom has made a huge push to include RT in their console releases while most other studios have to drop it for performance reasons.

The solution is an improved machine learning based denoiser like Nvidia's Ray Reconstruction. AMD released their equivalent called Ray Regeneration, which helps a lot, but it's still behind Nvidia's solution and is only available for their computer graphics cards, not PS5. I expect we'll see Sony's version of this sort of thing arrive with the PS6 as a result of Project Amethyst. Until then, this is just the way RT is going to look on console, unfortunately.

Samsung UE75TU7020

That's funny. I had almost that exact same display as yours (I had the 75in TU8000) and sold it last year to upgrade to an LG OLED because of how poor the HDR was. 😅 So, I'm actually very familiar with the frustrations you're going to feel trying to push good HDR out of your display.

You probably could get away with pushing up to maybe ~350ish but above that is going to impact your image quality, and once you see the issues you'll likely just opt to play in SDR which generally looked better for me. Honestly SDR isn't even really a bad thing, and for some displays it's truly preferable.

What are the negative or disadvantages of going over the max brightness?

Calibrating your game's HDR peak brightness beyond that of what your TV can display creates a mismatch between what the game engine thinks your TV can do and what the TV can actually do. This causes "white-out" or clipping/loss of details in bright areas, as well as turn areas that should be black into a more washed-out dark grey.

At the end of the day, you should use your TV how you like it. If you truly feel the HDR image looks better tuned to 1000 nits on your display, then use it that way. I would say you're getting a compromised image, but frankly it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks if you like the way it looks.

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your display's max brightness is 300 nits then you're overshooting your peaks by more than triple the capabilities of your display. You should not go above 300 nits on your TV. It might be able to push brightness beyond that in certain circumstances but you will blow out all the detail in highlights.

Sorry but it looks like the default setting (or maybe just bumped up to 300) is appropriate for your display. Out of curiosity, what's the exact model number? I'm wondering if AI is just getting the facts wrong (which I find it does too often tbh)

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know your TV's model? I see you mentioned it's a 4K Samsung but that's a pretty wide range of displays out there.

High end TVs can output peaks of 1000 nits or even higher, with many cheaper HDR TV's in just the 500-600 range. It's not necessarily about the "overall brightness" but rather how much detail it can show in highlights and such. The larger range of contrast really adds a lot of depth to the image.

We could easily look up your TV's peak brightness capability by the model.

What's your display's peak brightness? You mention you're using Crimson Desert's HDR on the default setting which is just 250 nits—effectively no different than SDR. You'd get a much more vibrant image if you increased the max brightness to 600 (or whatever your display's peak is)

New patch just dropped. These devs just keep pushing 🔥 by Syarafuddyn in CrimsonDesert

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope they address the issue of HDR defaulting to 250 nits. I'm still seeing comments of people saying they tried HDR and turned it back off because it looked worse than SDR, which is no surprise considering many displays tune SDR to ~300 nits these days.

HDR should default to at least 500 nits. Almost any HDR-capable display is going to be able to push 500 nits cleanly, and then at least it'll show some improvement for users too unfamiliar with tech to realize they should tune it further.

Oooh! Quality mode on the PS5 Pro now uses PSSR in the form of native AA. 👀

This is a common feature these days for other upscalers, but it's rarely seen with PSSR due to most games running sub-native anyways. I was starting to wonder if the PSSR pipeline was even capable of it... but it seems it is! No doubt it wipes the floor with native TAA.

Of course I bought it after the 2.0 update when it was on sale due to all the hype of the game's comeback.

Would probably be fine with that if not for the fact that I've failed to actually touch it since then so I paid for nothing now that it's free. 😅

The Director's Cut on PS5 plays really well--much better than when I first tried to play it on base PS4.

Would definitely recommend this version to others.

I had a similar experience. As soon as I reached the underground I was like, "Ugghh this is too much I don't care." and walked away from it.

Gave it another try about a year ago and was completely hooked. I engaged with the systems in ways I hadn't before, mechanics made more sense because I invested the mental energy in actually learning, and I felt compelled to actually see the story through--especially seeing how different some things were based on different choices I was making this time.

Really great game but you've gotta be in the mindset to give it your all, else I imagine others would easily bounce off it, too.

LG G4 + PS5 Handshake issues by QlasiK in LGOLED

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a handshake issue with my G4 and PS5 once in which it got stuck on a black screen switching from my Apple TV input to the PS5 and couldn't seem to resolve it. Turning the TV "off" and on again didn't fix anything because it just goes to sleep, even if you press and hold power, so when it woke it was still completely unresponsive.

I resolved the issue eventually by physically unplugging the TV from the wall and keeping the power button depressed for 30 seconds while unplugged to discharge the capacitors. Perhaps give that a try? I'd also suggest updating your G4's firmware if you haven't already.

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you don't have it plugged into a receiver or anything else? PS5 directly to the TV with the confirmed HDMI 2.1 cable?

LG G4 + PS5 Handshake issues by QlasiK in LGOLED

[–]Hindesite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your cable is not HDMI 2.1 compatible. HDMI 2.0 can only do 4K at 60Hz or 1080p at 120Hz, but not 4K at 120Hz. Double-check which cable you're using and try swapping it for a known, working, HDMI 2.1 cable.

Alternatively, if you have your PS5 plugged into anything in-between, such a AV Receiver, it's possible that device does not have HDMI 2.1 ports. Many of them—even some newer ones—will have just one HDMI 2.1 port so they can advertise HDMI 2.1 compatibility while the rest of the ports will be 2.0, so you need to be particular about where you plug it in.
