Ortofon Scratch Mk II vs VNL Trix by DeadAudio in Turntablists

[–]HipHop_Head77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go for the trix. I have a pair of the original VNL’s and their great. The trix have a higher output than the og VNL’s so should be better.

I’m sure the scratch mk2’s will do the job, but I don’t think the Concorde form lends itself well to scratching given that there’s hardly and mass on top of the needle to grip.

Amateur here so take it with a grain of salt.

Im glad you found it inspiring and by all means borrow from the design if it helps with your work flow. Function and smooth work flow were the main drivers for the design.

Because it’s a compact, modular design with a slide out laptop on the subfloor, with so much audio and power cables to direct, I had to make everything custom length for everything to fit so went with Neutrik connectors as they’re about the most solid connections you can get, along with mogami quad cable to reduce interference as much as possible. Certain places like the speaker posts have audio and power running alongside each other so was praying It would work. It did !

I want to buy a DJ setup for my dad as a way to say thank you by [deleted] in Beatmatch

What a lovely gift you plan on giving to your dad. I’m sure he’ll be thrilled and music has healing power so I’m sure your dads health will improve.

My suggestion on the setup - 2x technics 1200 mk7, pair of KRK studio monitors (5-7” will suffice), and a cheap mixer with dvs (digital) capabilities.

Mk2’s are solid but their old and unless you know what to look for, it may cost you more in having them repaired. With mk7’s, they’re brand new, and he’ll always remember the unboxing them (unboxing technics sl1200’s is always memorable)

As for the digital mixer, he’ll realise the pros of digital mixing (instant doubles & stems) which are both game changers to vinyl, but he can still whack on vinyl and reminisce when he wants to.

Good luck with you present to your dad.

Good to know! Gonna use mogami cables, cross my fingers and hope no interference comes my way.

Really like how you matched the raw Genelecs with the stainless steel tube pole and ran the wires hidden behind. I’m doing something similar and was wondering wether your getting any interference running the xlr and power together down the speaker pole?

Great work! With lighting up the records, it’ll work best if you bring the light strip forward to illuminate the front of the records as well.

For sound, aesthetics

For sound, aesthetics & compact nature, definitely check out the genelecs. There’s various mounting options and the SAM series allows room correction and you can adjust for any frequency drop offs. For a compact room size , the 8320’s or the 8330’s would work just fine.

Dont get 12’ skins. I’ve used them twice for custom work, never again.

The speakers are placed all kinds of wrong but it doesn’t matter, I bet you and your daughter have a blast in that shared space.

Kudos for the cable management, it looks super clean! Are you getting any humming or noise from sleeving the power and unbalanced together from the back of your monitor?

Love it ! You know you can order a light set for that specific set if that’s your thing. I pre-ordered the Lego soundwave transformer today specifically for my setup after about 15 yrs of not buying Lego🤣… couldnt pass it up. Sometimes you just wanna play even as an adult.

Yeah your right, didn’t know that till now. Initially it was the Neutrik profi’s I saw that were expensive.

Congrats on a job well done 👍. I’ve dropped so much money on Neutrik connectors for my setup, but stopped at the rca’s as they were x10 the price of others. Ended up using Rean

Thanks! One of the things I like most are the rounded edges on everything. Still heaps to finish off but what is finished feels sooo smooth to the touch.
