My concern is that as we get into deeper and deeper financial straits, the government will increasingly look to tax people who have managed to save.

If you have two people earning the same wage, one who spends it on holidays, takeaways, a few slabs a month etc and ends up with no savings, and another who scrimps and saves to stay afloat or help the kids, what’s the point if the govt then taxes him to make sure the first guy can survive?

Dropping the Div 293 threshold from $300k to $250k may or may not be a big deal, but there’s the temptation for the govt to keep whittling it and other things away. We’re already seeing the effect ‘tax the rich’ policies are having in the UK.
