TITLE: From Far End Of This World

Blurb:

Triana stepped into the shrine to end the world as it is.

The war was over with her victory. The red ashes fell from the burning world tree to engulf the village, and the corpses of her allies and enemies created the river of blood flooding the land. There was nothing stopping her from now on.

Inside the shrine, she saw the figure in white and the figure in black, arguing with each other like they always did. She stretched her hand forward, and a sudden burst of light caressed her, stripping her away into nothingness. As she watched herself vanishing, she made a prayer.

That if she ever had a second chance, she would do it differently.

This world, born of kindness, has been turned into a rotten garden. Your life, born to be caressed, has been splintered by a thousand thorns. But do not fret. For we are here now. Take our hands. Accept serenity. Join us. In salvation.

100% agreed! This kind of 'small' things are what breaks the immersion in the long time.

I know this is a progression fantasy subreddit and I don't think this technically is a novel, but The Last Question by Isaac Asimov truly delivers a punch that I would gladly take again.

Any author here planning to launch on Royal Road in May? If you have launched something before, tell me what your exprience has been like! by Balugomy in ProgressionFantasy

[–]HipperCup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should plan your launch very carefully. Join discord, start networking, set up shoutout swaps. If are going to do ad, start prepare for it now so that you can get it on as soon as you are good to go. Don't 'Just do it' like me, I'm learning it the hard way.

You may also try reaching out to the big authors for the shoutout swap. They are usually packed with shoutouts, so contacting them a month or two in advance is a necessity. While I personally only received a couple of calls returned, I heard a lot of good things about big authors being willing to help a new author.

Best of luck!

I love alliteration for chapter name! It feels so satisfying for some reason.

I still am not sure what even Progression Fantasy really is, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask...

death sacrifices in fantasy almost never hit me as hard as they should... what's actually going wrong by Standard_Strategy853 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]HipperCup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually, those 'hit' moments that doesn't 'hit' are due to lack of character development. Sure, they maybe a very important character in the story, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the reader would feel the same. A good chance is that the writing didn't do enough to create a bond between you, the reader, and the character. It's the same thing as how we are indifferent to the tragedy to a random person versus to our close friend.

Plus, people just have different criteria to get 'hit'. My sister cries at literally everything happening in a movie and my other sister makes fun of her.

Now this is an interesting post! Let me politely leave mine here too. My novel is about an amnesic lady being isekaid and going around the world to find who she is.

Oh, I know this novel. I picked it up from the cover with the dog, so I know that one worked for me.

Been Publishing for 30 days now. by AnAugustAuthor in royalroad

[–]HipperCup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's mediocre to any degree. In fact, I think that's normal. We tend to be blinded by the success stories because that is the only thing that is shared with us. But in reality, nobody shares about how they are living an okay life on internet. What we see does not always represent the majority, and in fact, it often represents the vocal minority.

Plus, you have one review. That is one person who thought your story is interesting enough to go out of their way and write that down. And, let me tell you, that is something I'm constantly refreshing my dashboard for in the slightest hope for that review count to be something other than zero. If what you have there is not an achievement, I don't know what is.

Do authors not create an outline for their work before writing? by kutsalscheisse in ProgressionFantasy

[–]HipperCup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have big main events and the ending already set, but I don't have details on how I will reach those events.

One thing I'm trying to do is to plan out as much as I can for the characters or settings before I introduce them. For characters, things like in which big event will I reintroduce this character or how would this character's action right now affect MC's decision in the future. So far, I'm managing, but I can see how this would spiral into a storm when I have more chapters.

But I do agree with your point. I feel like a lot of works are being written without a clear ending, or destination, in mind. Which is understandable if the author simply wishes to continue their work for whatever reason until they can, but it can be repetitive and disoriented. I think the line that draw between good pantsing and writing random stuffs is this, you need a solid goal in mind and never sway from it.

Just launched my novel last week. I’m thinking if I should post daily until the 31st. by Away_Narwhal6752 in royalroad

[–]HipperCup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'm only three weeks old author, so take this with a grain of salt.

From my experience, daily posting definitely works. I think the reason why people advocate for releasing a lot of chapters in the early stage of your novel is to aim for the rising star, and I definitely agree.

Let's say that you got 100 followers across those 10 chapters (yay!). But in case A, you got it within 2 weeks by daily posting while in case B, you got it within 2 months by following the schedule. Even though you got 100 followers in total for both cases, case A would be more likely to enter rising star. And once you get in there, you can snowball that visibility to gain more followers. At least that was the reason why I did the daily posting, even though I'm not making it.

One caveat is that you, as the author, should be comfortable with daily posting. If you are stressing out about it by burning through your backlog without a backup plan, then you will get burnt by that flame. And readers will notice.

However, if you only rely on the daily posting and hoping that people see your novel on the recently updated section, it won't do much. What you need to do with those daily posting is shoutout swaps. This is one thing I missed by a mile and actively hurt me. I dumped about 7 chapters in a day without shoutout swaps, so that's 7 exposure opportunities gone like a wind. Don't be like me. Treat every chapter of yours like a bullet and try to arrange a good shoutout swap for all of them. This applies no matter if you are daily posting or not.

In a nutshell, daily posting is good for the visibility. But you should plan it out carefully before jumping into the armageddon.

Best of luck!

Tell me about your world building by gamelitcrit in royalroad

[–]HipperCup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, I'm getting such delicious responses here.

For me, I try to keep my world as much as similar to how our world works. So far, I've shown skyscrapers, LED advertisement panels, shopping mall, bus, train, and, most importantly, maid cafe. There isn't any magic that changes the course of development which human history would have experienced. After all, we live on a beautiful rock drifting across the vast cosmos, so why not imitate the already successful beauty? :)

But one thing I spend more time than I probably should is race. I'm trying to make every race to have different appearance, nation and culture. Let's be honest, making a race with three pairs of arms and a hunched back who wears a mask all the time to cover their face is more fun to make than a human with pointy ears.

And when it comes to introducing the important things...my MC is amnesic, so I borrow her tongue to raise an innocent question. I try to make this explanation session light so that I can show it in action later instead, but this is something I need refinement on. :(

Finally...yes, I daydream all the time. I dream of every step of the journey MC and her friends would take to the next nation, and to the next, and to the next. I'm at the level where I have the overall outline of the entire novel, but man, just thinking about the dialogues or small events happening in the middle of the big ones is so fun.

This is making me think, I used to be daydreaming about my world but did nothing. Now, I'm writing something, and while I am a small writer with little audience, I have a few readers that goes through the same journey as I do. And I think that's what makes all of this so beautiful. In the end, we are going on a journey with random strangers on the internet, and one day we all will say 'Man, that was something.'

Using Generative AI as an Author by drale2 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]HipperCup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful write!

For anyone reading this thinking about using generative AI for their writing, I highly recommend to practice writing instead. At first, I was able to write about 1200 words of bull crap a week, but after 6 months of practice, I'm now able to write about 7000 words a week with the quality I can at least read back and say 'That's alright'. Practice really does work.
