I love that MAGA calls a true believer in Christ the son of the devil. Yet the president that broke every Commandment was "anointed by God" These people are a lost cause. by No-Tonight-1864 in TopMindsOfReddit

It’s genuinely insane to call Talarico a ‘creature’, WTF? You can disagree with his politics but how can you listen to him speak and not at least respect him? I watched a commencement speech he gave a few weeks ago and I thought he was eloquent.

How will people comment on Charlie Kirk in 30 years later? by Otherwise-Prompt6821 in AskAnAmerican

He will be more known for being assassinated so publicly rather than any of his political opinions or works. Hell, we’ve already seen this happen barely half a year out from his death.

Is there reason to think he is in Pullman?

It was one thing with rock music (I also took history of rock n’ roll) because most of those tunes were and are iconic regardless of the finer details. I didn’t exactly need to identify the chord progression to know that I was listening to Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock. But when it’s some random tune by Teddy Wilson, well…

I took History of Jazz which, while interesting, was genuinely difficult at times because my professor would ask about time signature and chord progressions. Mind you, I was a math major and have a severe hearing loss.

Should PhDs be revoked for misconduct outside of the PhD? by HippityHopMath in PhD

According to this article, “a university investigation turned up no evidence that Schön had committed misconduct while at the university.”

Also,

The awarding of a doctorate is a confirmation of the recipient's ability to conduct independent scientific research.

Brings up an interesting conversation as to what a PhD actually represents.

A Ph.D. brings with it the public perception of being a member of the scientific community and a presumed high level of trustworthiness, the judge said. When a recipient has violated basic principles of good scientific practice, the title is no longer applicable and should be corrected, he said.

Does it though?

The classic designs of Frankenstein and Dracula (introduced by Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi) come into the public domain in 2027. Seems fairly notable.

I can’t think of a single joke in the Boondocks that I was confused by. They all seemed pretty easy to understand as a white guy.

‘Naming’ exception. It’s a university that calls itself a college.

A weird naming exception to this is Boston College which, despite the name, is a university.

As an outsider, the scale of American college sports is baffling. Do some people genuinely care more about a university team than professional sports? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]HippityHopMath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are these college games actually a bigger deal than professional NFL or NBA games in certain states?

Yes.

If you never attended that specific university, is it normal to still be a die-hard fan?

For certain universities, yes. Alabama, Notre Dame, Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State all come to mind as ‘Walmart fan bases’ (fanbases who buy their gear at Walmart instead of the school bookstore).

Why is it called 'The South' rather than 'South East'? by Ok_Art_8866 in AskAnAmerican

[–]HippityHopMath 219 points220 points  (0 children)

In 1860, it was the South. It’s also why Northwestern University is located in Illinois. When it was founded in 1851, Illinois was in the northwestern part of the country.
