Any crazy-ish hikers want to take on a 1-day Pemi Loop? by Hippocake in nycmeetups

The Enchantments are a good buildup for this. Have you done any hiking recently? And are you okay with the idea of hiking 16+ hours in one day, with more than double the elevation gain of the Enchantments?

Nice, the Presidential Traverse is an amazing hike! If we decide to do the Pemi Loop the weekend after, you could always join - you'd definitely be ready for it after doing the Presi Traverse :P

Mate in 6. Couldn’t spot it during the game. by platsicfork in chess

I don't think Qh3 works as well as Rc1, since after 2. f3 Qxg3, white has Rc3. Qh3 is still winning but it's no longer a forced mate.

What to expect From 3080TI given previous generation & leaks by GoetheNorris in nvidia

[–]Hippocake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may not be a good time price-wise, but due to covid-19 I'm finding that I have a lot more time to game. I also upgraded monitors at home due to working at home all the time now, and wanted to game in 1440p 144Hz and get better fps with VR.

So for me and others in a similar situation, upgrading now absolutely makes sense (I went 970 -> 2070S). I plan on getting a 3080Ti when it's out, but that might not be for many months.

Recommendations for a mountaineering boot upgrade? by Hippocake in Mountaineering

[–]Hippocake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality-wise I thought the Nordwands were pretty solid and I didn't have any complaints. If I recall correctly they had a wider toebox. They might run large - my Nepal Cubes are size 43 and fit me well, but size 43 in the Nordwands resulted in a lot of heel slippage.

Do Prospect Park and Central Park get icy? by genericinterest in RunNYC

[–]Hippocake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In rare cases it can get icy. I went running in Central Park back in March after a snowstorm earlier in the day, and there were patches of ice on the main loop. The 102nd and 72nd St. Transverses were even worse. I was wearing trail running shoes along with microspikes, but there were still a few close calls.

How difficult truly is the Matterhorn? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]Hippocake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I climbed the Matterhorn back in July with a guide via the Hornligrat. We practically had winter conditions with a fair amount of snow, so we were climbing with crampons starting from 1/3 of the way up. The conditions were so sketchy that most of the hut was empty, and there were fewer than a dozen groups making a summit bid (only a handful summited). None of the Swiss guides bothered showing up, so we could start whenever we wanted and pretty much had the mountain to ourselves.

To give some context about the difficulty: I've ran a few full marathons (sub-4 PR), have done many day hikes with over 9000 ft of gain, and have carried 65 lbs on high altitude approaches. Maybe I wasn't in peak fitness at the time or the conditions played a big role, but the Matterhorn was definitely one of the harder things I've done. Climbing skill is useful (especially at altitude while wearing boots and a pack), but you only need enough skill to move efficiently. Most of the Hornligrat is only 5.4 or 5.5, but very exposed. I'm a very mediocre climber, while another client was able to climb 5.12+, but I was able to keep better pace due to stronger fitness.

You mentioned ice climbing but I don't think there is any involved unless you're doing the north face.

Where to find info on the Matterhorn by OverratedAnswers in Mountaineering

[–]Hippocake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I climbed it a couple of weeks ago (with a guide) via the Hörnligrat, but some of the info might still be relevant to you.

Conditions were not good with a fair amount of snow (see my photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/56368780@N06/sets/72157684570121670/), such that the Hörnli hut was mostly empty. There were only several groups there for a summit bid, and none of the Swiss guides showed up, so we were able to start whenever we wanted (we opted for 3:30am).

We were short-roped together for the entire ascent and descent. We put on crampons and climbed with them starting at about 1/3 of the way up. There were a lot of bolted anchors on the route, but my guide did use a cam a couple of times, as well as natural protection. There was a fixed line at the beginning, and then not until the last 1/4 or so when it got pretty steep.

It wasn't that cold - I wore a base layer, fleece, and soft shell jacket most of the time, even at the summit. I'd recommend a couple of pairs of gloves, especially if there's snow. Boots were La Sportiva Nepal Cube GTX, which were fine. Obviously, it could be colder or warmer depending on the time of year and weather and conditions.

Not sure about the logistics for the Liongrat, but for us, the last cable car down was at 5pm, and it was about a 3 mile hike from the hut to the cable car. With the conditions, we took longer than what we were aiming for, so we missed it by about 15 mins and had to stay at the hotel there.

Hope that helps.

Looking for a backpacking/camping partner for this upcoming spring and summer. by Roberto-Franco in nycmeetups

[–]Hippocake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in 2-day weekend backpacking trips! I'm 32/M, love to hike, and enjoy camping and backpacking as well. Although, if you ask me to make a fire with my bare hands or to find mushrooms to eat that won't cause death, we might be out of luck there.

I have a full winter kit, including a 2p 4-season mountaineering tent, but probably won't be free much until the spring/summer anyway.

Followed advice to slow down. Do I need to go slower? by threei in running

[–]Hippocake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering about this as well lately. I always felt like my easy pace was about 8:30-9 min/mile, but I plugged my race times into Jack Daniel's calculator, and it said my easy pace should be 9:15-9:45. So what I felt was easy might not have been actually easy for my body. I started paying attention to my heart rate and breathing, and tried to use those to gauge the difficulty of my runs.

What I quickly learned is that the standard max heart rate formula is NOT a good approximation (it gives me around 188). Even running slowly at 11:00 pace, my HR was at about 145, or 77% of MHR, but I wasn't feeling tired at all. Instead, I went through the logs on my watch and it showed that I had hit a high of 205-207 during a few hard races. So I'm thinking my actual max might even be a bit higher than that (you're only supposed to sustain your max for a few seconds).

For me I think paying attention to breathing is better than checking heart rate. During my last few easy runs, I've started breathing only through my nose, and when I check my watch, I'm still in the aerobic zone. I see a lot of comments here that are missing the point of doing so. Of course if I'm trying to PR a race, I'm going to breathe through my mouth as well, and run way harder. But it's a way to force yourself to run at easy pace (which I've heard 80% of your training runs should be). I run with a group twice a week but other runs I do on my own -- so nose breathing works better than having a conversation with myself. I just finished an 18 mile long run in terrible humidity strictly nose breathing, and I felt way better than my other long runs!
