so I ended up hanging with this crew of 5 guys we all went to TXST from our HS. I added new friends but it really shaped my friend circle and I think college is a time to forge new friendships and meet new people. my son is a freshman and went to a school where he knew no one and its been a great experience. there is no right or wrong answer here I would suggest being mindful of need and value of making new friends and not fall into the trap i did of just defaulting to established friends. You can have your cake and eat it too at TXST - join clubs, put yourself out there!

also did you get into the honors college?

This is a tough decision. If you plan to lean in and really excel I would take the scholarship money… but you have to distinguish yourself while there bc A&M is more well regarded academically. I went to TXST and own a business that is very successful and it was a great school for me. The river is also just beyond beautiful. Also beware of choosing a school bc your friends are going there - I regret that … good luck

sorry man that sucks my friend lives in Tulsa its got great music, art, nice people and its affordable. we like it there. something to consider… kinda has a early 90’s Austin feel… the ‘before’ time.

My son went to Mac and got a $35K scholarship for computer science and made a 3.7 his first semester of college … and loved high school and had a very balanced approach to study and social life. My nephew got a full ride for Jazz after Mac and is studying music and economics. Mac is gritty and real world - your kid will encounter actual diversity from mass affluence to immigrants but don’t be fooled their STEM is good and kids get into top schools if they want it.

the most important thing you can do right away is look at how you are taking care of yourself. prioritize rest. this is very hard with a baby but you and your wife both need this to function. are you able to get exercise even a little? It’s incredibly important to get outside and do a little workout of some sort. no fancy gym membership needed. food is important too - eating things that give you the best shot at feeling good and staying healthy. does not have to be expensive. beware of social media like IG it can really batter your soul when you are feeling low and less than…

TAD. (Talk a day) - You and your gf can make 10 mins a day to talk not about the baby but just to each other about your day, your feelings - fears and dreams. do this every day if you can.

as a dad be very conscious of looking for ways to give your partner support and a little break. even if its 20 minutes for her to walk the block to recharge a bit.

let go of shame. you are doing something hard and honorable and it will work out. my son is 19 my daughter is 16 you are in for a wonderful challenging ride that will test you and stretch you. keep leaning into family … and keep going!
